  • Kenya has a long history with the Indian community. Today, Indians are one of the most popular minority groups in Kenya. This video explores the history and current treatment of the Indian community in Kenya.
Kenya is a country in East Africa with coastline on the Indian Ocean. It encompasses savannah, lakelands, the dramatic Great Rift Valley and mountain highlands. It's also home to wildlife like lions, elephants and rhinos. From Nairobi, the capital, safaris visit the Maasai Mara Reserve, known for its annual wildebeest migrations, and Amboseli National Park, offering views of Tanzania's 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Kenya has the second largest Indian community in Africa, after South Africa. In 2015, there were around 100,000 Indians in Kenya, which is 0.3% of the total population. The majority of Indians live in the major urban areas of Nairobi and Mombasa, with a minority living in rural areas. if you enjoyed content, kindly hit that like 👍 button and subscribe. Correction, SA has 1.56 millions Indians and Nigeria is second with 800M. Why focus on 0.30% of population, the presence of Indians in Kenya is always blown out proportion, in a country of 55 million people 100K is nothing, there are even those who claim Indians own Kenya. There are few Indians who do manufacturing and construction, majority are into whole stores, those who used to do retail have left, outcompeted by locals. When it comes to black ownership and locally manufacturing industries Kenya is one of the highest in Kenya. Kenya has a large number farmers who are upper middle class and upper class

@@andeyo1 thanks for the update on the population. I don’t think focusing on humans who are a huge part of the diversity and the most recent tribe is “nothing”. I also disagree that it is blown out of proportion. As an African myself, I didn’t know about them and I recently learned so I’m sharing it to the world. Most westerners can’t even name 5 countries in Africa so I’m pretty sure many people have no idea about this new tribe. It is important and not “nothing”. Thanks for watching!

A lot of Indians came to African countries for work during British colonization. When they were no longer needed, the British didn't pay for their fares back to India as they had promised. So many Indians just stayed because they didn't have money to go back to India. Indians from that time are found in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa. Many have become citizens of these African countries.
Also, there are Christians in India, Catholics and Protestants, they are religous minorities (2.3%) but they are there. The apostle Thomas is known to have gone to India to share the gospel there.

Ivan there is a heavy Indian presence in the West Indies and South America. In Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and some in Jamaica and Belize as well in Africa where they were taken to Kenya, South Africa and the Mauritius Islands. The British imported Indians under contract from India as indentured laborers after Slavery was abolished because the formerly Enslaved Africans refused to work on the sugar plantations even if they would be paid to do so. They also worked to help the British to build the Railroads in Africa. The terms of the contract was for a period of five years and they were promised a return trip back to India. Some eventually returned but most stayed the majority of which were of the Dalits or what was considered from the lower cast. The indentured service was also offered to Portuguese from Madeira and Cape Verde and Chinese a well at different period. The indentured labors were able to keep their name , culture, religion and to some extent language as opposed to what was not afforded the formerly enslaved Africans.

So in other words there is segregation and racism in Kenya. why would black people from the Caribbean, Europe, America or any other parts of the world want to reside in Kenya other such racist conditions, if people can't live as one in Kenya. Can black people go to India and tell the natives that they are not allowed to live amongst them. NO. This is extremely upsetting and need to change. I was planning to relocate to Kenya but I would be damn if I would go there to invest my money and live under such racism and segregation. I think it would do your followers good to also talk to Black Africans about their relationship with the Kenyan-Indian community !
My take: Ps. This is not a generalization of everyone. 5:
The Kenyan-Indian Community are beneficiaries of the British colonial race-hierarchy system . Where White people came first, Indians second and Black Africans last in terms of rank and access to everything . Even with the end of colonization unfortunately Indians continued to uphold this air of superiority over black Africans. How was that possible ? Because they control nearly the entire manufacturing industry in Kenya …basically most of them are rich if not middle class ! The British wouldn’t allow black Kenyans to get into the manufacturing business because it would economically empower them to fight for freedom. But somehow, the natives needed everyday goods. To solve this, the British allowed Indians to open factories where they would produce goods to meet the demands of Africans . Of course this allowed Indians to benefit financially and accumulate capital. When colonization ended they used this capital to take over most manufacturing including companies that were formerly owned by white people. This is how they have continued to exercise economic dominance over black people. One of the biggest grievances against them, are the poor labor practices and rampant abuse metted towards black Africans who form the bulk of employees in their factories. This is a well known fact across the country. The racism is mind blowing !Mind you without this Black labor, the Ke Indians wouldn’t be able to operate because their numbers are small. But they remain untouchable because they have the power they buy themselves out of any serious trouble. I believe time will bring justice one day.
Also discrimination in housing against Black people in areas where KE Indians have lived for a long time is well known fact.
On the other hand, we have Indians and Indian movements that diligently fought with Black people against British occupation and really really helped to push for freedom. So its not all Black and white

An extremely informative vlog, your best yet in my view. I watched it over three days, and would have watched more. I'm Jamaican so anything about the motherland attracts my interest. There is just so much to unpack.
First, I wish the African residents in India, the Siddis, enjoyed as much acceptance. Generally, the Indian presence in Africa, is a relative success, when compared to the British playing God, and imposing their will on other innocent peoples around the globe. Case in point, the Jews in Palestine, the Rohingyas in Myanmar, enslavement of my African ancestors, and countless other atrocities and violations.
In praise of your efforts as a vlogger, were I 45 years younger, I would certainly entertain thoughts of relocating to the motherland, and Kenya especially. Kenya's standards compared to Ghana and others, are very impressive, despite the atrocities endured.

Thank you so much for watching. I agree wholeheartedly. Kenya is an amazing country and there’s so much to see and learn about the motherland. I truly appreciate your time watching this. It is certainly a subject that I will revisit again in the future. Thanks for the feedback.

I was in Kenya late January and I observed how wealthy Indians treated their Kenyan employees. Needless to say-I will not return and give them business again
