I grew up in Philly, but I'm slightly too young to remember this. This station never came in very well so I would always end up watching Philly 57 instead. I remember it being a low budget station, but its content seems to be on par with the stuff other channels had on in the era. All UHF stations had a ton of old stuff on to fill time until the mid 90's when Paramount, WB, and Fox bought them. I remember channel 48 in the late 90's for airing ECW, weird old cartoons like King Leonardo, and sometimes even anime. It seemed completely random.

Both channels had the Looney Tunes. 17 had the silver and redrawn eras (1947-1959, 1968 W7 (1935-1943)) and 29 had the gold (1934-1947) until Turner bought them out of that channel.

The sad part was that some of the cartoons (Battle of the Planets, the old Mighty Mouse shorts, etc.) and live action shows (i.e. Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk, etc.) were never broadcast on Philly UHF channels again, while other shows (i.e. I Love Lucy, The Beverly Hillbillies, All In The Family) would not be aired until Philly 57 arrived in September 1985.

Is there anyone reading these comments on this account because I remember WKBS channel 48 back in the late 70s and early 80s during the time when the net work was done serving Philadelphia and other states nationwide because I remembered during the weekday afternoons, channel 48 had a cartoon program called the KBS fun machine, and during the introduction, they will show an arcade gaming machine, which shows all of these children’s cartoons from the past up into the 80s and this is during the time when video game machines within evolving, such as Pac-Man, which was very popular during the 80s before the net work leader, signed off back in 1983.

Yup, it went dark in early September of 1983. The owner, Field Communications, could not find a buyer for it and so opted to shut it down and turn in the license to the FCC. For two years Philadelphia would only have to local channels - 17 and 29 - until Channel 57 came on the air in (I believe) September of 85.

I'm on the left side of 60. KBHK was my FC station.
Had KBHK gone dark in early September of 1983, it would be difficult to imagine the effects of that calamity upon me.
WKBS was a very important part of hell of Philadelphians' lives. My retroactive wholehearted and wholesouled condolences.
