  • The four-times Isle of Man TT winner, John Robert (Jock) Taylor made his sidecar TT debut in 1978. With passenger Kenny Arthur on their Yamaha outfit they finished second in their debut race, backing that up with a third in the second race. Jock’s luck was not to be repeated in 1979, collecting his only D.N.F of his TT career in the first of the two sidecar races and coming home 16th in the second.
For the 1980 season new passenger, Benga Johansson, assisted in the team achieving second place to Trevor Ireson in the first of two TT sidecar races and going one better in the second to take their first victory. In both races they set the fastest lap and the end of the season saw them become Sidecar World Champions.
This footage is taken from our classic TT film called "The Island", which documents the 1980 Isle of Man TT races and is available to own on DVD or download: rb.gy/yxhg5

It really is an insane sport on it's own add the Isle Of Mann to it and it becomes pure madness

Reminds me of going with my Dad to Snetterton, where he stinted as the Chief Medic, in the mid 70's to watch sidecar racing. One passenger fell off at speed, then two bikes behind ran over his legs. He came into First Aid on a stretcher. My father whipped out a scalpel and started cutting the guy's leathers off him.
"No nooo!" moaned the guy, "Not me leathers! They cost a fortune!"
"It's your leathers or your legs," my Dad replied with a hard look.
Thankfully he capitulated. My Dad saved both his legs but iirc he never raced again.
