I love squirrel hunting and cooking them up at camp. My tactics are simple, setup hammock camp in the area I am hunting. Let things cool off for the first day and be sure all my chores are done by the evening of day 1. Day 2, stay as quiet as possible and listen for the tree jumpers as they chase each other from tree to tree. The quieter you are and the more focused you are on the sounds around you, the more you start to notice squirrel are everywhere. Keep it up bud!

I remember when we would shoot squirrel in SC when I was a kid. Used 22lr. Head/neck was the spot to get em. We'd soak them in baking soda and water overnight (helps take the gamey taste away), rinse them well and then deep fry them.
Once Mom forgot to rinse them, NEVER forget to rinse them. 😵

I also favor your format of not putting in horrible loud guitar music like everyone else does. Natural sounds are much more soothing and appreciated. Good job on that. @bvang8370 Před 3 lety

I've been hunting squirrels for decades. Gray squirrels are runners. You need to see them first cuz when they see you, they will run and won't stop for you to get a clear shot. This is why some people prefer shotguns. You can chase them onto trees like you did but it's best if you have 2 or more people cuz when on a tree, when you move to one side, it hears you and will move to the other side. They also hug the branch so it's very hard to spot them. When you can't see them no matter how hard you look, you can shoot at a random branch to scare it to move so you know it's location. Fox squirrels on the other hand, when they see you, they'd freeze thinking that if they don't move, you won't see them. This makes fox squirrels easy targets. Plus, fox squirrels are larger than gray squirrels so they're easier targets. I used to use shotguns but as you mentioned, you'll be eating pellets. So I now use a .22 rifle. Squirrels have very good hearing so if you make a sound, like stepping on leaves, even if it hasn't seen you, it gets suspicious and will avoid that area. When stalking squirrels, use the wind to your advantage cuz it masks the sound you make. When the wind blows, you move. When the wind stops, you stop and listen. The downside is the wind can also prevent you from hearing the squirrels. There are squirrel calls you can buy but I found that the squirrels calls at the store are pretty much useless. If anything, it only scares off the squirrels. But 1 of my uncles made his own squirrel call and it works like magic. We tested it on city squirrels and they'd run to us like a mother squirrel to a baby squirrel cuz it sounds like a baby squirrel crying. The uncle also uses lemongrass, he peels of the leaves and use the soft, thin part of the leaf, put it between his thumbs and blow on it to make a sound. It works for him but when I tried it, it didn't work... maybe there's a subtle difference in the sound. I used to like the taste of squirrel meat but lately, I don't eat it anymore cuz of the thoughts of parasites (bot fly larvae) and most of all, the cleaning and cooking... it's not easy to clean a squirrel. It also has a very strong smell that stays on your hands for days.

For squirrel and 17 hmr I would use a soft point over a vmax style bullet. The varmint bullets just seem to destructive when I have used them on ground squirrels. If it were legal a fmj would be better to preserve meat. 22lr or shotgun was my choice when I lived back east. Thanks for sharing your experience.
