  • Take a journey to the wilderness in a 1922 Studebaker for a classic vintage hunting and overnight camping trip! Nathanael Logsdon shows how to do it with 100-year-old gear and teaches some old fashioned, but worthy tricks for squirrel hunting.
Lots of folks have asked about the boots I wear in the video. These are available as new reproductions from www.logsdonandco.com/product-...

It’s very neat seeing an accurate representation of what it was like to hunt 100 years ago. I have a Remington Model 6 Rolling Block built around 1912 I use occasionally for rabbit and squirrels. Those old .22s can be had dirt cheap in pawnshops and they all have their own character to them.

Yall should look into the invention of the cut shell, a quick method to convert bird, buck or even rat shot into a crude slug, this was done during the depression to save money but in theory could also be used for survival in situations where you need to hunt larger game but lack the higher accuracy and lethality offered by a mono projectile shotgun slug, this was not exactly invented during the 1920s but it was a common practice during the depression

My only concern is the lack of high visibility clothing, if your out in the middle of nowhere by yourself it's less dangerous but you never know if someone else likes your spot and mistakes you for game (ir just didn't notice you in the brush and overpenitrated, my grandfather had a situation in the 50s or 60s where a group of friends where out hunting and another guy in another group was tragicly killed by a 12 gage slug that overpenned the brush line, they had sevral trained medical perosnel and sevral active and retired military personnel with combat lifesaving expirence but they really couldn't do anything, went right under his heart, guy was gone before he hit the ground saddly) please please please practice safe hunting practices and always bring emergency first aid and get first aid training even if your not going hunting solo, it could save your or someone else's life!

You had FUN and that's what it's all about sometimes... but in the 20's I might think you would have taken the shots that we might not otherwise take today. I know that when I grew up in the 1960's in a relatively poor family, even a 'gut' shot was meat on the table...not just squirrels, but woodchucks as well. You did VERY well on your own doing all that videography! I am impressed you were able to do that AND camp/hunt ! Loved the period accouterments and would love to see more ...and with a buddy perhaps!

Maybe it's just nostalgia for a time I never experienced, but there is something so oddly warm and interesting about the this time period, and seeing someone like you who is clearly very knowledgable on the subject matter tackle it with such passion and skill is fantastic! What I really like about this genre, compared to other periods is there's no emphasis on military situations unless you're specifically doing WWI. There's a lot more opportunities for truly civilian reenacting without the threat of war. After years of doing military reenacting, that's refreshing!

They built a big fire and let it burn that evening, after the huge fire burned out they swept away the coals and ash and made their beds upon the warm ground. They slept under their blankets with their hunting dogs and all were warm as toast . Next morning they pulled off the covers and were surprised by 6 inch snow across the woods .Middle TN hill country .THANKS for the video especially enjoyed the music and old car .

I used to be in a hunting camp here in Pennsylvania that was in the Allegheny National Forest. It had a 99 year lease. The founders a great grand father and other farmers used to take bales of hay and build a sort of outline of a house and strew it on the floor. Then cover the floor with a tarp. And cover with hay and blankets at night. Until a year they could get enough stuff down there to build a wooden camp.
    Good times. B
They built it around the depression.

    G'Day from Australia,
I enjoyed watching your video. Spending time in the forest or "the bush" as we we call it in OZ helps to revitalize the spirit and body. I sometimes head out with a single shot .22 rifle that belonged to my late father in law. It is about 90 years old. Often I don't bag a rabbit but the high point of the day is lighting a fire and cooking up a simple meal, usually bacon and eggs washed down with tea or coffee, much as you did. A simple pleasure. Watching your video made me think of Hemingways 'Big Two-Hearted River"--a favourite outdoors story for me and I'm sure others. I look forward to watching more of your videos. I've also subscribed to your channel.

I hunt moose, elk, and mule deer using a canoe to access remote areas most years, and while my gear is more modern those hunts really feel like a throwback to elder days of outdoorsmanship. In 2016 I used an inherited Lee Enfield rifle that was stamped as being made in 1916, and was fortunate to take a young bull moose with it. That remains a standout hunting memory for me

Great video, enjoyed it. Brought back some memories of my dad he had a hunting outfit very similar to yours, right down to the riding trousers and boots. I still have the jacket and trousers, to sentimental to get rid of them. Keep these cool videos coming, thanks again!...

How do you know squirrels don't like ties? I like to see the research on that one. Lol! Anyway, in this period, it was very common to wear a tie while hunting. It was part of everyday attire at this time. Furthermore, it keeps the neck warm!

Excellent. I never knew the squirrel call trick. I’m sure that if I had more time with Uncle Ray b.1905 he would of told us that one. Nobody gets that much use or satisfaction from such an automobile. Thank you for the presentation. Bleepin squirrels

At 17:22 he totally reminds me of Elmer Fudd. "Ssshhh Im hunting Wabbits" tip toeing through the woods 😆😆😆 Great video though man, I enjoyed it.
Also, something to think about next time you camp is to put a sleeping matt or even cardboard down to lay on, cause it insulates you from the ground. The ground will suck the heat right out of you. You'll go to sleep nice and warm, wake up 3 hours later freezing. I know this was a period piece, so I get why you didn't do that, but just for when your not camping 1920's style :)

My Great uncle David was a squirrel hunter in the NC Backwoods around this era. Being a share cropper, it was a way to put food on the table when pickings where slim.
