  • The surgeons would once again like to thank Dr. Heffernan for sharing his knowledge on the topic of high blood pressure. They discuss what is blood pressure. They discuss what is systolic pressure and what is diastolic pressure. They discuss the ideal values for these pressures and what values constitute high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

I’m 21, one day decided to take my blood pressure at a Walmart just for fun. Read 187/128. Checked it over a few days and it was consistently that high. 6 months later and this Tuesday I’m having my second consultation with a neurosurgeon, turns out I have a tumor on my pituitary gland in my brain causing the high blood pressure. Was feeling terrible with headaches for years and couldn’t figure out why! Wish me luck

Uff sorry to hear! Hope you feel a bit better. Good that you caught it by accident, more or less! Same happened with me. I tested somewhere for fun nd then read 174/121. Mom is a nurse and said the reader was broken probably. After measuring more I stayed high. Sent to doctor, doctor sent to hospital and now doing some fllw up tests including CT of breast, kidneys, heart and blood tests. But not the brain, maybe I should ask for that too? My Mom was a nurse from the old school. She had high blood pressure, and was taking medication for it. This was years ago. At home she had a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer. I smile every time I say that word), and taught me how to take blood pressure. She has since passed away. I gave away the stethoscope and lost track of the cuff. How I wish I still had both of them today.

Well, I’m 44 yrs old and my blood pressure was in the 155/80 range and my resting heart rate in the high 70s range. I’m 5’8” and I was 209 lbs at the time. I began an oil free Whole Foods plant based diet in October of 2022. My weight is now 178 lbs. I work out daily, because I have so much energy. My blood pressure is in the 105/60 range, my resting heart rate is 55 and my total cholesterol has dropped from 215 to 135, my LDL is 65, from my last physical. I only supplement with B12, but before this I was taking a bunch of vitamins with no effect. Now I just eat a lot of colorful fruits, veggies, greens, whole grains and legumes, sweet potatoes and yams, until I’m full. I’ve been feeling great. I followed the book arresting and reversing heart disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. My BP lowered and as per my blood work, I’m doing fantastic, so I’m going to continue with this.

The last couple years of my 29 years of being on the Birth Control Pill, I’d get horrific headaches the same week each cycle. One day I finally checked my BP during a headache. It was 245/143. I drove myself to the hospital at midnight (left my husband with sleeping grandkids) and they looked at me like I was a ghost. My headache wasn’t very bad at this point and I felt pretty normal. They thought their BP machine was broken. They kept me 3 days. I’m CERTAIN it was Pill/hormone related. I’m so blessed I never stroked.

5 years ago my cardiologist gave me a stress test and I failed. I was sent to St Michaels hospital in Toronto and had 5 blockages opened with stents (3 of the blockages were in a row). They figure it was a miracle that I had never had a heart attack or chest pain. Last November when taking my routine BP check at home, it was up a bit. I continued to check every 2 hours and it kept climbing. Big mistake on my part. I obsessed over the numbers and my own anxiety caused pressure to increase. I went to the hospital when the numbers became 'critical'. Diagnosis - calm down and stop stressing. That worked fine. Now I take a reading once a day - Maximum. The lesson here is to monitor sensibly and take your meds as prescribed.

By climbing, how high ? and what do YOU consider critical ? Make sure you are taking your reading properly, sit down, feet on the ground, RELAX, wait a few minutes, then take a first reading, and relax / wait about 5 minutes before taking another. You can for example, take 3 readings and use the average. The worst thing to do is panic when you get 1 high reading. You would be surprised how anxiety can raise BP, pain, needing to to the toilet, etc, so ideally take your BP when you do not have the need to urinate or have a bowel movement, anxiety can significantly add to your numbers.

I do too, my blood pressure goes way up when I'm at the doctor's. They always take blood and I'm always keyed up about that, I absolutely hate blood draws. Most nurses do it wrong and when you try to correct it, they tell you, "That doesn't matter!" Where I go to the doctor, they walk you 50 yards to the room, immediately put the cuff on you (when measuring blood pressure, you're supposed to be at rest for 5 minutes), they're not supposed to put it on over shirt sleeves and other clothing, then they fire questions at you the whole time. All of this gives you an elevated blood pressure readings and I can't believe it's an accident, they're just itching to put you on medication that you don't need. When the little wrist readers were in vogue, they'd tell you that you're supposed to lift it up and hold it against your chest at heart level. That drives your blood pressure reading through the roof, your arms are supposed to be relaxed. You're supposed to be relaxed and the nurses do everything they can to make the whole experience NOT relaxed.

Hey Doctors, just found your channel. Thank you guys for talking about blood pressure.
I have been on Lisinoprilz for over 10 years now. Currently at 40 mg. My numbers have been creaping up to around 140/89 in the morning. In the PM they settle in at 132/82. Recently started taking the Lisinoprilz at bed time to see it makes a difference. It does bring both reading down some (135/85) in the AM.
Going to be talking to my cardiologist today about how to lower the numbers even more.
I am a very active 75 year old senior.

My numbers started to creep up just like yours when I was 50. By the time I was 62 they were 145/95. I felt ok and had no symptoms of anything wrong with me other than that high blood pressure. Then i had an accident. I needed a CAT scan because of this accident. Then they found I had a large mass on my kidney. About the size of a nerf football. I went in for surgery had the mass and kidney removed. The tumor was 5.5 lbs in weight. And it was not cancerous. Thank God. And now my blood pressure is normal age 63 and 120/80.
I had no idea I had this mass growing on my kidney and the only way it was found was with a CAT scan which was done because of a fluke accident that had nothing related what so ever to do with any sort of kidney problem. Even my kidney number prior to surgery were good. So I had no reason to go looking for a tumor. It was found completely by coincident to my unrelated accident. However that tumor was the cause of my higher blood pressure numbers.
Just a heads up, something is causing it and it might be worthwhile to go looking for the cause of your high blood pressure.

@jim I also was on that same med for about 10 years, I had no idea it was the cause of multiple issues that Dr’s said was due to my age. I was on 4 other medications for advanced arthritis, edima, lethargy and muscle weakness. They boosted from 10mg, to 20, it was from a different company and I turned into the Michilen man overnight. Dr had me stop, next day I felt different but still puffy. 2 days in I felt good, on the 3rd day I had all of the energy I had when I was 17. Of course my BP’s went up 50/20 points but my energy, Strength, and all traces of advanced arthritis an SC pain were GONE!
Side effect was to be a slight cough not in my case = I missed out on 10 years of my life due to the side effects and the Dr’s never thought all of those problems e were caused by that medication BUT IT WAS.

During routine blood tests I was diagnosed with Familia Polythycemia. I run to help keep my blood circulation . I take baby aspirin at bedtime and BP meds in the morning . For most of my life, my BP was 140/70. It only went up when I reached 59 years of age and was caring for my aged father, who was a control freak. By that time, my weight had increased from 10 st 7 lb, to over 13 stone, due to not getting the regular exercise I was used to, before caring for my father. I only discovered my raised BP after my father died in 2006. The following year, I started caring for my mother, who had developed Dementia. That was even more stressful than caring for my father. She eventually died in 2017. Since Covid in 2020 - which destroyed my social life - my BP has increased, but has stabilised at about 180/95. That said, I have recently changed medication and am showing an improvement of 150/80, which I am hoping will improve further, as I start exercising again, now that spring is here. My weight has now reduced to 11 st 5 lb since Christmas and is stable to within a couple of pounds.

Every time I saw a new Army doctor they would monitor me for a few weeks and then leave me alone. Once in a great while it would go to 210/105 or so. Toward the end of my career, I was over 40, they put me on BP pills and my wife bought me a BP machine. I got out of the Army about 05 and my bp leveled out to just under 140 most of the time. Of course in 2020 I was back up over 200/100 every time I turned on the news.

@@Pwilli-hs6yi Conns is hyperaldostronism. It can be caused by tiny tumours in the adrenal glands, or it can be more of a malfunctioning of the adrenal glands. Both cause the adrenal lands to pump out large amounts of aldosterone which regulates the body’s balance of water and sodium (salt), blood volume and blood pressure. My mum has had it for more than 50 years. They told her she wouldn't live to see 50. She's now 83. Back when it was diagnosed all they could do was give you blood pressure meds but the body soon becomes used to those and the blood pressure rises again. Once aldosterone blockers were developed it became a bit easier to control the disease, but there can still be episodes of extreme high blood pressure. It can be familial, and is in my family. Yikes that's quite high - Did your doctor determine you had HBP base don ONE reading at the office ? I'm surprised that 10mg brought it down by as much, that 190/110 was definitely not an accurate reading, the decision to prescribe drugs should be based on multiple readings you do in optimal conditions, and at the doctor's office, is not the best places for most people.

This is so well explained. My sister had a constant headache for 2 weeks. She took herself to a and e and it turned out her pressure was 215/185..pulse 120 BPM, she was placed on bp meds immediately. It was also found due to blood work tests that she was low in sodium.

I suffer from complex ptsd and have hypertension. My BP sky rockets when I have an episode. I once was clocked by a paramedic after an incident with BP @300/250. They wanted me to go the the ER but I refused as I knew I'd calm down in a few minutes. It's pretty tough maintaining control of yourself at those numbers.

I take my BP at home. My BP just seconds ago was 116/69 pulse 62 (average of 3 readings). Yes, it is always higher at my GP; 120 to 125/80 normally, but when I see her it is normally earlier in the morning. It is now mid-day. I use an OMRON M7 meter, which is pretty much the standard used at clinics. But the Dr's still use the mercury system, which I guess can also be susceptible to faulty readings, depending on the Dr's hearing! I do use a low-dose betablocker and lisinopril 10mg once a day; have been for years. Doctors are reluctant to reduce medication if "everything is under control". The meds have no side effects, so I just continue taking it. My health actually pretty good, as far as I know. My other blood worx look great.

Although he couldn’t figure the exact cause but I think I was quite overweight at the time. Since then I managed to change my diet and had to accept eating less. I found the change difficult at first but I did it slowly…..now I’m 60 and my BP is in the normal range though still with the aid of medication.

I went in for a routine exam and mine was way off top being like 168 or higher, been sitting at a desk for 9 years when I was used to being active before at work. Lost a lot of weight and got it down but doc refused to take me off meds. I finally took myself off meds when I was going full out on a treadmill and could not get it to go much above 100 for the high, used to get dizzy alot too. Everything fine now and check it now and then to make sure it stays that way. Also as far as white coat, mine will go up over 40 points when at the docs on their machines, one time they took it before the appointment like always and then when I was totally relaxed checked it on the way out.

It goes through the roof when I am pregnant which unfortunately caused me to have a stillbirth at 28 weeks 2 weeks ago. It got as high as 180/110. Yeah, most conventional drs are drug pushers for the drug lords (big pharma).
Most of them are not capable of critical thinking or it has been taken away from by the drug lords with “standard of care”. Who determines standard of care, the drug lords. Stick with Dr Google, if you do the right research, you’ll be healthier for it. It was for me and I have a pacemaker and had bypass surgery 7 years ago.

My mother was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 79. She was so healthy. Didn't take any meds at all. She ran 1 hour/day, travelled around the world. Perfect BP, strong heart. Then cancer took over her body. She did deep breathing to relax. Her pain was horrible. Mum passed away at the age of 82. Deep breathing helped her alot while struggling with cancer.
