  • One of the MOST frequently asked questions that I'm asked is how much it costs to do a K swap. I go over a few random details that make this an extremely hard question to give generic responses to.
    Be sure to let me know any other questions or topics you'd like me to go over for you and I'll try to bring you a video on that subject. Be sure to subscribe for more!

    Lol preach!! You been at this one car for a while and the history says it all man. The real question those cats are asking is "how do I get what you have without spending what you did or working as long/hard as you worked?" The answer: fast, cheap, reliable - you can only have 2 lol.

      Well I make about 80k a year... I’m looking for a civic now for around 609 to 1k. I’d love to get a K series reliable and within my budget. Kinda starting over in life so I don’t have a ton saved.

    • @ksisjdm
      @ksisjdm  Před 4 lety +3

      A K itself is already reliable. Reliability outside of that comes with the quality of the build and and the parts chosen.
      Simple maintenance should be enough

      @@ksisjdm great build, very clean and one of a kind. I went the same way with my Integra, but only b-series. I invested about $15k over 3 years, and it was well spent cash. I wanted to see just how much hp a b18b could make reliably. It's just as you said some of my parts are inexpensive ($150-$350) and some are very expensive ($900-$1300).when building a car it's like you said, take your time, don't rush it, and don't go super cheap because it won't be reliable. My b18b makes 468hp on E85 and I haven't had any problems with it for 2 years. Alot of the guys out there have to realise if your going to build a high hp and reliable car, you MUST! take your time, do extensive research on your build, and do general maintenance consistently. As far as racing is concerned, might run my Integra once a month, my favorite is taking freeway on ramps at 3rd gear at 9200rpm🤗😎😏. So to reinforce what you were saying in the video, take your time, save your money, do some research, and build your car right the first time, and you won't have a blown engine, and you will be able to enjoy your build for years.🤔🤔😁🤗

      Why didnt u just buy a acura rsx type s or acura tsx. They are both better looking cars and if the car and swap costs 3000-4000 you can just buy the rsx type s or tsx and get a k20 with the rsx type s or k24 with tsx. I dont understand when people swap civics when you can just buy these better cars with k engines already in them and not have to do all the labor just for a k engine.

    • @ksisjdm
      @ksisjdm  Před 4 lety +51

      Lol because the car wouldnt perform anywhere how the civic performs. I guess you have no understanding of the difference the chassis makes. There's a reason you dont see a rsx or tsx setting records like you see a civic doing.
      I didnt buy one because I prefer the civic chassis with the powerplant from a bigger chassis.

    I agree about the quiet exhaust part. I know my motor is down peak HP compared to other comparable B series builds due to me keeping the cat, ac, and power steering and using a smaller ITR catback. But the performance is good enough for me and its nice to have it quiet unless Im revving to 8k on the street.
    On the K swap part, every time I look into it, I won't be happy with a budget build and would end up doing something similar, but not that crazy, my costs would probably be on trying to make it look like it came from the factory with AC PS, etc still on it. I kinda did fall down that path on my b18b1 to b18c1 swap, and even then Im still not happy with things that I keep changing around.

    Holy shit dude, that engine bay is gorgeous. I have a 2005 Civic EX and a 2003 Honda CR-V (K24 engine) sitting in my driveway, and I want to swap them, drive train, knuckles, all that. Rebuild the engine, probably with some forged components, h-beam rods, crank, etc. and get the head from a TSX, ported and polished. I'd like to stay N/A, as much as I love to have a turbo, I just don't care to deal with it. The little Civic would be more than fast enough with just a built engine in it. I want it to be bulletproof. But for now, I'm mostly focusing on tightening up the suspension in it with bracing throughout, adjustable camber, aftermarket control arms, and polyurethane/delrin bushings throughout, and like you, keep the outside of the car looking completely stock other than it being lowered a bit and some aftermarket wheels.

      @ksisjdm  Před 5 lety +17

      Yup, some of us like to go overboard with it and rack up a bill like this. Notice how almost nobody approaches a K swap like the old school B swap. B series people will use all OEM used junkyard pieces, rig up things to work, massacre OEM wiring and so on. Most K swaps are done with much more attention to detail which is costly. It would be expensive to do a B swap with all the details attended to. But most dont do that because then they would be dumping K series amounts of money and ending up with much less power

    • @ksisjdm
      @ksisjdm  Před 5 lety +3

      Never said it wouldn't be fast. Just said with much less power. An average stock k swap makes a quick car. A well put together bolt on K swap car can make quite a bit more power that budget parts simply cant provide the engine with enough air to be as powerful. Quick still nonetheless

I had that mentality with my first Honda (ep3) and I ended up owning it for 2 years and not doing anything with it. Buying your bolt ons, harness, ecu, ems, cables, shifter box, etc used can definitely help cut costs. I was one of the lucky ones and bought my k swap unfinished in a rusty gutted hatch shell. Now it's in a coupe. Anyone can do it. Most of you fellers from the states have a great used market for Honda parts. Same as older dudes who rebuilt '69 Camaros they are middle aged and spend around $30K making it new again. It's basically for the Love. . Money isn't an issue if you really love what youre doing. If it's not then those ppl should take Heed and just buy a built one already and spend 7-10K. If they are able to find one done already and they are willing to part ways with the Honda . Thieves are bad in Houston specially in the honda game.Going k can be kind of cheap or stupid high it all matter what u want when I went k24a2 in my 93 teg I got alot off stuff from junkyard motor shifter box cables ecu all together 600 bucks but my complete swap was about 2000 dollars running but that's no labor price I work for Honda so I did everything myself.Most expensive part probably was getting k-tuned in my ecu I always said I can upgrade parts later just wanted a running car but k is the best bang for buck if u want to stay all motor the power and torque is crazy for a 4 banger.

    keeping it real,love it nice video man.yeah swaps are expesive .got a s3 engine swap in my 2005 audi a3 200hp quattro.its got i.e. forged connection rods and upgraded bearings,stage 1 loba(germany) head with supertech valvetrain,FMIC,full 3" exhaust,ic piping,hybrid tte420 turbo,hpa intake mani,ttrs low pressure fuel pump,upgraded loba high pressure fuel pump,loba flywheel and clutch kit,okada coils,upgraded spark plugs,Bov,recaro pole position seats with removed backseat and airbag delete.better engine and gearbox mounts,short shifter and probably some other stuff i'm forgetting but it makes 414ps(420hp) and 545 nm(401 ftlb)of torque,it's like you say it's how far do you want to go with a engine swap,i have put roughly about 25k in the swap could be more but definatly 25k and now i'm broke lol.thats the reality of things,decent swaps take years to build up it has taken me about 6 years of saving every penny i earned to get to this point with my car,but i could have done it the cheaper way just put in the stock s3 engine,hybrid turbo,ic,bov,hpfp,exhaust and make 380-400hp with only 10k of an investment,the difference in hp is small but if i upgrade my current turbo(with the reinforced engine)just need to turn in my tte420 and put down about 1k on top of that to get a tte480 turbo,tune it,maybe some injectors(rs4 or ttrs) i can get 450-465hp(realisticly speaking).it's just what you want and how good(strong) the engine is that you are swapping and what hp and torque goals you set for yourself.i wanted 400+hp without bending my stock rods and needed the torque because my car is 4wd so i saved up and first searched for a decent almost new engine and started from there.my advice don't get carried away if don't want to invest alot of money.or just buy a project car from somebody else which has all the work allready done,like said in the video,just try to get a list of all the moddifications done to it.again nice video man i just subed,if you want to check out my car theres a dyno video with the results on my profile page along with a friend of mine's ex mk6 gti(got himself an rs3 now don't know the current specs of that one but was planning turbo upgrade so i guess if he did by now it will be making around 500hp;-))

    I think sourcing an rsx type s 02-04 from an auction or something would be the best to start a k swap. You’ll get-full engine/harness, transmission, ecu, shiftbox and cables, (some swap can use rsx rad). Then you would have to get kswap header, mounts, conversion harness and a fuel set-up. Honestly if you’ve been following childstar go back to his first engine setup till now. Probably won’t look like this in a few years. You’re always going to want to add something! But if you can source a RSX Type S 02-04 you can knock off a lot of parts off your list that are (IMO) the most $$$$

      @ksisjdm  Před 4 lety +1

      For a stock and smaller K20 yes. I never even started with a k20
      That's another reason it's so irrelevant for people to ask what it cost me to do my swap. The year when I did mine and the engine type make a big impact as well as all the fancy parts used and plug and play items.
      A swap can be done for 3-4k easily nowadays. It wont be very nice but itll be a working k swap

    Hey thanks for making this video man. I have always wanted to work on a Honda tuner but was caught up with muscle. This video was perfect for what I'm trying to figure out right now except one thing. I want to know if I can build a fresh k series motor from scratch in my spare time before buying the car itself as I do not have the space for it yet other than possibly building the motor. I am going to get a 6th gen Honda civic coupe regardless of model and basically clean it up, have it painted, and drop a engine I build or rebuild in it. Thing is I'm a body work guy mostly and the extent of my engine experience is pulling a 68 mustang 302 by myself, tearing it down, and then selling the car and pieces when I moved. Then I did a clutch switch on a 2002 mustang GT, but other than rebuilding a carb and painting and restoring some engine parts I'm still learning. But I have to plan the vision out so its realistic as a spare time hobby for me. I am already planning to take apart and rebuild smaller engines before tackling this one and studying more but do you know a k series that fits all those models or one that fits most so I can at least widen the spread a bit and build an engine in the meantime once I learn more? Or another engine that's fairly universal and similar? Any guidance and sources are much appreciated.

    • @ksisjdm
      @ksisjdm  Před 2 lety

      Yes you can definitely build an engine on the side and then use it to put in a chassis you eventually get. I basically pieced my engine together like that when I first started. I would recommend doing it that way so you can take your time and build it to your specs!

    • @ksisjdm
      @ksisjdm  Před 5 lety

      And now let's compare that a 300whp NA K does in the 1320 and what a mere 350 turbocharged K does in the 1320. Usually takes about a 500whp turbo K to perform the same or better, all those low end budget K parts wont do that job and they wont be reliable either, especially the critical components in the junk turbo kit. Which is going to skyrocket the price well beyond what's in my little junk of a car.
      Your suggestion of parts is great for someone simply wanting a K car that's decent to start with on a low budget. Beyond that, it's nothing worth mentioning. I dont think people consider mine has been a reliable daily driver with this output for years.

    They have some cheap, fairly well made stainless headers on Amazon and eBay for like $60-$100 with some decent looking tig work done on them. Don't have to go all out to have something nice looking that performs. I'd just say put your money into the engine, gearbox and suspension, and you can go a little cheaper elsewhere. Anywhere you don't want to go cheap, you'll have to be patient and save. Hell, Konig Backbone wheels are like $90 a piece on carid and they're good freaking wheels. I just bought 5 of them, and they only have 1 or 2 left, though. lmao You can find RSX Type S knuckles at a junkyard or pull-a-part for $50-$60 a piece, sometimes with the rotors and calipers included if you make a big purchase on other components. But I used the knuckles from the 2003 CR-V.
    I don't make a lot of money, but so far I've got my EM2 ready to roll suspension-wise for the most part, and am about to pull the engine and trans from the CR-V in my driveway. I'm going to very likely spend the next 4 or so years slowly building that engine to where I want it. If you don't make a lot of money but want a bullet proof, built engine, then you'll have to have the patience and the discipline to save any extra money for what you want and need.
    I'm gonna be building this engine on a stand in what's supposed to be my dining room after I tear it down and get it back from the machine shop. It'll be the centerpiece of my home for a little while.
    I got a full set of billet aluminum strut bracing, front and rear off eBay for $80, and a billet aluminum rear control arm and cross member/subframe brace for $100. And I was actually really surprised at the quality. Got some lightly used Skunk2 Pro-C coilovers from a friend for $400. Bought some Skunk2 ball joints, rack ends, end links, and Eibach sway bars front and back. Polyurethane and delrin throughout. The same friend is hooking me up with Ktuner ECU and flex fuel and his entire fuel system for a decent price, and I'm getting all of his hoses and mil-spec wiring harness. Everything will be around $800, but I'm saving around $500 if I bought it new.
    The engine will, by far, be the most costly part of all of this. By the end of it, I expect to spend around $8k on the engine, head, transmission and gearbox. That's not too bad, considering. But it does help to know people with shops that'll work for cheap, free, or for beer and pizza. And I'm just lucky like that, I guess.

    • @ksisjdm
      @ksisjdm  Před 5 lety

      I'm not sure what you're trying to explain to me or if you think I dont know more than one way of building a car. Also if you look at dates, you'll see I spent several years getting my engine and car the way it is.
      Btw, those wheels you mentioned are not that great. They work as intended but they still are not a quality set of wheels. Not strong construction, not lightweight, and not well designed for big brake usage so they are less functional for a performance setup. But as far as having to roll on and look decent by all means they are good and reasonably priced for that.
      Thanks for having a look at my video and for the comments. I appreciate you stopping by my channel.

At any rate, I'm saving up for some made-to-order Rotiform wheels, and they don't fit brakes any bigger than the Backbone's, aren't much lighter, and are made out of the same exact 6061-T6 aluminum, despite being 2PC and $3000 for the set. You have a modded b series barely reaching stock k power
    The k series is a stock starting platform
