Driving in Milton Keynes 1991

- This video was recorded sometime during 1991. It had to be a Saturday as my friends and I all worked during the week and Sunday trading didn't begin until 1994.
I'm with my friends and we are just driving around Milton Keynes (it's what you did back then, before the internet and game consoles).
In the Metro is Nick and Rachel and in my car (Ford Fiesta) is myself (Leonard) and Cameron (filming). We stop in Netherfield to speak to our friend Darren.
During our drive, we visit the following locations
Springfield
Netherfield
Bow Brickhill (Sandy Lane)
Woburn Sands
Willen Lake
Sorry for the terrible filming. Optical stabilization hadn't been invented. In fact, Mobile phones were not around.
And for those who know me now, that's me with the wearing the glasses and...cough...perm hairstyle.
The bravery shown by the metro driver overtaking is breathtaking.

Great Video it went all around where I lived and loved
I remember about 16 years after this when my friends began to drive. The completely unnecessary acceleration like a right bellend and just going to random places getting in and out of the car all day, literally any excuse to drive somewhere, thats what this video gives me memories of tho mine was in the 2000s so later than this. We had games consoles but the internet wasnt quite what it is today yet so still a lot of driving, willen lake and seeing the deer and sunrises when you have been out all night, and just going to mates places back and forth, good times.
The music. The lovely, lovely music. Oh, my. Take me back! Unfinished Sympathy at 20:00... Oh my gosh. What a time capsule this is.

Hi, i still live on the same estate, up the road from wealstone place , i am now 40, but you filmed it when i was 11 yaers of age and you drove past my street and saw my dads old car. I tried to recognise your faces, but unsure whether i do,.. It really bought back memories... Thank you so much, i just cannot believe how time has past so quickly, left me feeling nastalgic..
Glad you liked it. Quality is pretty poor but it was many many years ago. Great memories for myself and friends. And awesome to see trees that have green massive since when the video was taken.

I was 18 when this video was made, I didn't start to learn to Drive until i was 20! I find this video of MK from the early 90's brilliant as my first and only visit to MK has been much more recent wich was 2021

The drive from Springfield to Langland Road took me back. Used to live at 286. I was 17 when this was filmed, living on Oldbrook... Awesome👌

My era. I was 17 in 91 and driving a mk2 escort. No abs or esc back then. Driving was a much more real experience i think. Thabks for sharing👍

I live in Campbell park and often go with my two boys to the basketball hoop and 'big slide' a bit behind the one stop in Springfield (appears in this video at 20:00) - Springfield hasn't changed much. Also instantly recognised the old petrol station at the beginning at the one which used to be in Peartree Bridge...
The strange frame interpolation really messes with the originality of this.

Ha! Driving up to Brickhill woods to hang out. Bloody hell! 7 years after you lot, my mates and I were doing the same thing. We all lived in Newton Longville, and some in West Bletchley.

this was the year i first visited mk, i was 18. i ended up moving to mk in 2000. loved thi town since i first saw it. :-) shame its gone down hill now with all the council destruction. :-(

Lived on Walbrook Ave..opposite us was if anyone remembers them The Dunsfords on Turnmill. Janet was the manager at the local store M&W.

Going down h9 groveway past open University slip road in forgotten about that there is another roundabout outside there now. Further down they where buildings walnut tree and Kents hill developments. A lot has changed in those 30 something years.

Excellent video of you driving in MK in 1990, those days of motoring was enjoyable before the Mobile phones, viral internet and newer technologies were amazing and more socialising with friends.
I would also assume that the cost of living was cheap with less people having to worry about the environment and other things. Since gaming consoles and smart phones were invented people started to meet up less.
Just got questions if that’s ok, how old were you at this time, was your car insurance cheap for that time?
Also please would be able to add more old videos as well and record a new video of this route same way like the passenger recording the route please???

I got my first car around the same time which cost £550 and my first year of insurance was about £180 a year third party, fire and theft!😲

I was 11 in 91 but remember it like yesterday. My mate took me out on his job about 20 years ago to milton keynes. By the afternoon, after he finished his delivery, we went to this huge lake with bars/restaurants around the outside. Does any9ne know where this would be in MK? Thanks.
Love the soundtrack, were u using CDs at this time or still on cassettes?
I think it was tape but I did get a portable Panasonic CD player which had a 3.5mm jack to tape adapter. Then I started using CDs. If I remember it had a 10 second buffer to stop CD skip in the car.
Tape was a compilation I recorded at home from CDs I bought. I had a technics CD and tape recorder.

The Ford Fiesta A36 VBD was last taxed in May 1994, and the Metro was last taxed in December 1994 after only 4 years on the road. What happened to them?

Crashes
Either crashed or fell apart. Even in the nineties cars were still pretty shoddy compared to now, I remember people buying brand new cars post-1991 and within 1-2 years there was some kind of serious issue.
My current car is a 2016 model and has never gone wrong apart from a dead brakelight bulb and needing a couple of tyres.

Back in the day this was high quality. It was the OK garage and of course it's still there but now a car wash but easilly recognisable.
