Truckers were stranded in Box Elder, South Dakota for the 4th consecutive day as I-90 remained shut down due to blizzard conditions. High winds worsened the situation when they caused the stranded trucks to be completely drifted in, immobilizing hundreds of trucks. The winds, which were in excess of 50mph, also buried many residential areas in drifts that covered garage doors, driveways, and even second-story windows. Front end loaders were brought in to help clear the massive piles of snow that made many neighborhoods impossible to navigate.

Looks exactly like Christmas Blizzard, Christmas day 1983 , Denver Colorado.
Except the whole ground was 19 inches
Of snow, 6-7 ft drifts. A Christmas memory for a lifetime.
I remember when my husband and I lived in Box Elder outside of Ellsworth AFB. yes those mounds of snow could get bad. If you tried to go places when the weather was not the best you could get stuck. That is why when you travel up there in South Dakota you should have cold weather gear blankets, candles, shovel etc. In case you get stuck. The winds are bitter.
Great advice Pat. A New York State Trooper rescued a truck driver a few weeks ago who had wrecked his truck into a ditch. The truck driver had nothing more than A t-shirt, pair of shorts, and flip flop sandals on. This was during the bad Lake Effect Snow Storm they were having up in the Buffalo, NY area. When the trooper rescued the driver, he told the driver to grab his jacket & the rest of his clothes. The driver had 2 t-shirts and a couple pair of shorts, no jacket, boots or shoes.
I love the Air Force. I gave them darn near 10 years back in the late 70's. 1st base was Holloman AB, NM. Loved every minute of it.
We have too many inexperienced drivers who die the cold because they get stranded. Be careful out there, and NEVER LEAVE YOUR CAR

We live in Rapid, some areas got it worst than others because of the wind. Just got out there with the snow blower and shovel and got rid of the rest of the packed snow before that arctic air finally sets in. This is the first of many snow storms this season.
snow tunnels and forts heck yeah. I have seen houses covered in snow completely in 1978 I think that was the year. Clear Lake Iowa. crews would go dig out furnace vents then front doors and check every house. was crazy and yet still fun.
That would be too much for me, but snow is wonderful. I feel sorry for people who never get to see it.

It’s always funny seeing how snow can falls evenly straight down with no wind blown drifts in other parts of the world but in South Dakota the snow is always blowing!

I'm glad I don't have to drive in that anymore I remember getting snowed in like that in my rig in Wyoming for an week an a bad blizzard.
Hey, that's my neighborhood. Does that make us famous now? 🤣 The wife and I spent a good amount of time plowing out the driveway and to the front door of the house.
That old Chevy truck at 2:51 probably will start up just fine after they dig it out the Equinox from before maybe not so much..
those truckers are lucky they got parked, not so lucky if you're driving a day cab

Why would a company ask you to drive in a blizzard? Your life isn't worth whatever you're hauling! I have more questions but that's all for now lol Thank you in advance for answering & hauling products for us! We can't live without you.
@@luv2luv720 they need to drive safe. So many shipments cargos need to be delivered. Hours matter. It is not easy to say stay home.

Those sweet Chinook Winds should have that melted down in a few weeks.
Southwestern Minnesota had that one year. I got stuck on I 90 small Cenex for several days.

It's crazy how the wind blew 90% or more of the Snow off of the Roofs, at least roofs won't get overloaded.

Blandlands it is. What it is. I my self lived in them. For a number of yrs. Long ago. No power once 4 days straight snow like it is of the black hills

However, you are kind of right. As I recall from my winters in Huron SD, it seemed that the snow would blow away and then blow back again etc.
I swear the snow that was on the ground in March was the same that fell in December, just traveled all around through the winter. It sure didn’t melt.
There were many whiteout condition days when snow wasn’t actually falling - just sideways

I feel bad for those truckers , we had about half that amount in northern Nebraska. I had to risk it and hightail it south after being stuck for 2 1/2 days.
I've been at this loves since Monday afternoon, winds were too strong when I woke up at midnight, and then they shut down I90 in the direction I need to head.
@@kolosis1149 yea I’m driving i80 heading to Salt Lake City , winds are 40+ in parts . Be safe out there driver .
Trucks could have a snow plow in the front of the truck like trains do.
It would add 5500 pounds to the front axle
Highway trucks aren't built for that
Plow trucks are double framed so the frame doesn't get bent or worse...broken

I've been at that Love's Truck Stop there in Boxelder. Just to be outside for 15 minutes to get fuel and DEF was miserable

Doesn’t matter, they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
I-90 has been shut down since Tuesday. These truckers are stuck until crews dig them out & 90 opens. Fortunately there are restaurants & showers, besides fuel.
How would the tesla truck do in this???

The winds were blowing 50 mph. Hence the extreme drifts. Box Elder is out on the Plains. Wide open spaces. We used to live out there. So glad we moved into Rapid City. We had the same thing, but not that extreme. . Snow drifts & no snow on the roofs. It's been very windy here since Tuesday.

I LIVED IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA FOR OVER 15 YEARS 💩 HAPPENS THERE IN THE WINTER.
When I lived there in northern Minnesota, North n South Dakota got hit hard sometimes. I can remember living in mid-state in Illinois as a kid, we lived in the country and got snowed in for up to a week sometimes.

In my years on the road I fortunately never experienced anything quite this bad. Wyoming was bad, got stuck 3 days in Reno bcuz of Donner, but you drivers are certainly earning every bit you get paid this winter. Unfortunately winter won't officially start for a few more days so just take it easy, cuz you have at least 3 or 4 months left of possible bad weather.
Look at this way. Boxelder. You got a. Dam good break. Of not hearing. FLY BOY'S enjoy. I am. From those beautiful BLACK Hill's. But a long ways away 🙂
