  • Located in the Three Valleys ski area, at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe.
Thanks to its 600 Kilometers of connected Ski Runs, the Three Valleys ski area is considered the best in the world. Couple that with the outstanding nightlife and après ski scene, and Val Thorens is probably the best ski resort in the world.

In this video, I’ll show you the most important things you need to know before booking a vacation in Val Thorens,
And if you stick around until the end of the video, I’ll give you some great tips that will help you make better decisions and save money.
Overall, there are 9 black runs, 30 red runs, 35 blue runs, and 11 green runs in the ski area of Val Thorens.
For intermediate to advanced skiers, I recommend buying the 3 Valley skips which cost 300 euros for 6 days and are worth every penny.
Take note that the 3 Valleys ski area has a shorter ski season than Val Thorens, which spread from around December 10th to April 20th each year.
Val Thorens has one of the longest ski seasons around, beginning in mid-November, and lasting until early May, after the famous Dutch Week Festival.
This video was shot on April 15th.
So, before we wrap up, here are my ratings for Val Thorens:
For snowboarders, it’s a 9, Together with the 3 Valleys there are endless possibilities for snowboarders. The fact that along the snow park there is a drug lift, damages the otherwise amazing 10 score.
For skiers for all levels: it’s a 9. The fact that the runs in Val Thorens itself are above the tree line make the view a little boring.
For freestylers, also a 9, again just because of the drug lift in the snow park.
For free riders, a perfect 10. Together with the 3 valleys there is indeed the largest area of off-piste than anywhere else in the world.
For Night life: another 10. Many packed bars for every taste, where you can party in a packed place with energy from 4 pm ‘til 4 am, every night.
Après ski: it’s a 10. The Foley Douce is the best après ski bar in the world today
Resort Charm: 7.5. The absence of trees makes it a little bit boring, but the many chairlifts and little ski runs crossing the village, gives it a unique charm all of its own.
My total, overall score for Val Thorens sits at a 9, and for young people and party lovers it is probably the best ski resort in the world today.
My bonus tips for Val Thorens:
Because Val Thorens is so high, it takes time to the body to acclimate and you are likely to feel exhausted for the first 2 days.
My recommendation is not to party hard on these nights if at all because you will have little energy, and if you drink you will probably suffer quite a harsh hangover.
The reason you haven’t seen nightlife shots in this video is because
The 2nd tip is not to come to Val Thorens by car, as there are only 3 designated parking garages that cost 70 euros per week. Everything you need is within easy walking distance, and on-street parking will land you a ticket, so it’s unlikely you’ll need the car for the duration of your visit anyway.
If you liked this video you can watch my videos on Les Menuires and l'Alpe d'Huez and other ski resorts.
You’ll make my day if you subscribe to my channel, and don't forget to push the chime on the right, so every time I upload a new video you’ll be notified

February 2020, Flew into Geneva, rented car, drove to Courchevel and stayed at Fahrenheit 7. Drove for a day trip to VT just to try out Folie Douce. VT was better than Courchevel since it rained the first day at lower altitude at Courchevel 1600. VT was way more crowded and more difficult for an intermediate snowboarder like myself, but was great fun. VT is for party and club scene, Courchevel 1600 was more for families. Will stay at VT next time. Tip: Book your airport transfer months in advance or you will be stuck renting a car.

I'm so so so glad people like you don't come to little stations, as we can have our winter work season peaceful without having to take cocaine :) I can't bear those strangers that come to ruin everything and think only their entertainment matters... it ruins everyone else's holidays and work time. We work so hard to serve people, we end hating them because their behaviors are scandalously egocentric. It's impossible to sleep in those stations, and when you work 50h a week, you just completely HATE the party people and almost wish they break a leg and get away...
So that's very nice that you prefer those places :D

Smaller ones are so much better and with a lot of untracked terrain to play in just a small hike. To name a few, Arolla and Evolene in 🇨🇭, Bardoneccia, Prali in 🇮🇹, Piau Engali, Luz Ardiden and many more in the 🇫🇷 pyrenees...

Usually you do not need to wait too long apart from early morning lifts where all people start, but in the holidays there are quite a few bottleneck lifts throughout the day.

First of all thanks for the so far 17 videos! , but after all of that, I am even more confused, for beginners, with 10 and 12 yo, the best option is Val Thorens? Is the highest score for beginners so far? Thanks in advance

    • @SkiResortsVideo
      @SkiResortsVideo  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Elorza,
for beginners, you don't need to go to Val thorens
because you don't need to pay a lot for a huge area like 3 valleys, you can have a vacation in smaller places.
i don't know where you are from , but a cheap option is Borovetz or Bansko in Bulgary, Passo Tonale in Italy, Val nord or grand Valira in Andora and many small resort in the alps.that way you will save a lot o money and don't pay high euros for a large ski area you won't use a big portion of it.
from the resorts we reviewd, Flachau is a good option and la Plagne as well. as they are relatively cheap for a top resort
Val Thorens was our 1st review, since than we also put to the equation the value for money, in the beginners score and we didn't take it to account in the Val Thorens review

When there is snow and you have enough money france resorts are the best …. ( tho its much less expensive than north america ) … austria is a little less good but its cheaper and quality for price might be higher… italy depends on ski resorts but also is a little cheaper but i feel france for not much more pricey is better maintained… pyrenee ski is also overlooked and cheaper yet quite good too - i also like avoriaz and serre chevalier ( you have laGrave just next to it)

Having just spent a week there I can tell that while the skiing is great in the three valley area, Val Thorens is too high to recuperate at night and half or our gang of friends suffered from altitude sickness for the first two days after arrival. La Folie Douce is just a ridiculous money grab with bouncers, body searches on entrance and 300€ bottles of champagne or 20€ bottles of beer with too loud music to talk with anyone. Other than that there literally is no nightlife in Val Thorens. If I would go there again I would get lodging from Meribel which is significantly lower altitude wise, in the centre of the three valleys so transit times are reduced and is a nice village.
