  • Author A.J. Jacobs shows how the coffee cup lid was perfectly designed to give you a full sensory experience while drinking. This video was inspired by the original work of Louise Harpman and Scott Specht and their book "Coffee Lids: Peel, Pinch, Pucker, Puncture."
    Small Thing Big Idea, a TED original series, celebrates the lasting genius of everyday objects so perfectly designed that they changed the world around them.

      Imagine all the oils and chemicals on that coffee cup lid from it's time going through the factory from the machines.
      Now also imagine every single one of those lids that just exited that factory will end up straight into a landfill, and again, in the name of convenience for someone to drink a single coffee in less than a few hours.

    • @spyder629

      if coffee pours out from the opening it's sealed from air. an increase in underpressure may result in bubbles forming which disturbes the coffee drinking experience. thus, a pressure equalizing hole.

    The one that cools your coffee is COOLLID...
    Who's heard of or used Coollid lids?
    They are the true cooling coffee lids, not the Solo traveler lid! And they are recyclable, coming with biodegradable soon. Yay!

  • @Phoenix-pm2iw
    @Phoenix-pm2iw Před 4 lety

    Which lid spills the least when open? Back in the day before we all started to use travel mugs I found a trick with the supposedly primitive lid at 1:55. If you remove the lid and just push the peel back part into the cup instead, it allows you to drink without splashing coming out when moving. Even while driving it works well, but not prefectly. The traveler's lid could create quite a squirt in the same driving situation. I was surprised that an expert on coffee cups didn't know about this trick. Try it yourself people.
