Grooming Winter Trails | Wildlife Thanked Me

  • I"m out enjoying a beautiful Canadian winter today in the woods where I've fired up my trusty Skidoo Skandic super wide track and homemade trail groomer. This old piece of iron sure likes to pull and pul and pull. As I hook my 2006 Skidoo Skandic to my groomer I begin making the rounds around my woodlot in order to knock down high spots on the trail and create a nice smooth track. With all the wildlife in the area they sure like having a nice spot to walk as opposed to the 2 or more feet of snow which makes getting around difficult. My dog also thanks me after a few passes of the groomer as that allows us to make our trips back into the backwoods that much easier. On today's episode I"ll show you the basic layout of my homemade steel groomer and how effective it can be for basic trail maintenance in the winter out at your wood lot or homestead. With only something needed to pull it, it sure gets the job done quickly and easily out here. Glad you're all along for the ride. Thanks for watching!
    Here we go!

    Nice to see you out and enjoying the Canadian winter, Sandy! Glad to see you finally have some decent snow up your way. I totally agree that there’s no better place to be than outside in Mother Nature’s beauty on a cold crisp winter day! Another couple years of “the grind” for me and then I’ll be doing much the same all winter long 😁. Might have to look around for one of those sleds - our property in the Lanark Highlands gets similar snow to yours, and this year we have (unusually) had more than your area. This coming rain/snow storm is forecast to bring another 20-25cm in the next couple of days!

    trail grooming...for me, definitely one of the most satisfying task on the woodlot. I really enjoy seeing the nice new trail appear and then the next morning take a walk on near concrete hard surface, with everything looking nice and clean under the snow. We use a similar groomer I fabricated. It is slightly wider than yours at 4 feet wide x 8 feet long. We do not use the snow blower on the trails but I will groom, double width, and this allows me to use the tractor on the trail all winter. However, this year we got kind of snookered when we had a dump of 18'' in one shot. Very difficult to get so much snow groomed solid enough to support the tractor. With a few cycles of warm, cold, rain, we are getting back on track to be able to use the tractor again. Enjoy the sludge my friend

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  Před 2 lety +3

      Great idea doing the double track for the tractor and I do know what ya mean about getting things packed down. Sometimes that fluffy layer can be trouble if it comes all at once.

    Gordon here, I dont know about you , But being a poor trapper in Alberta Canada, I use to use 2 logs behind the old double track ski doo. Each were about 4 feet long by 5 to 6 inches around .Then I would place one little ahead like grader blade one way while the other opposite with 2 quarter inch rope doubled. which made it half inch with eye hooks into each log then connected to the snow machine (with each log off set a little also) that way the first log move snow one way then the second one moved the snow back the other way. Next I could drive the trike with a ski off the double track rachet strapped to the front tire. then off to the races lol. I could pull a metal sled behind me no problem .With the twin track it used 5 gallon gas a day, verses the trike using 1 gallon a day.

    As for poor turning, I have an 144” track, it didn’t turn worth beans, I did some research and found out that if the limit straps on the track are adjusted up as tight as possible it transfers the weight to the front skis, it sure made a difference, now the radius to turn is about half of what it used to be.
