Sawing with Sandy
Canada
Registrace 15. 12. 2018
Hi folks. My name is Sandy and welcome to "Sawing with Sandy". My hope is that you take away something from the channel whether that is new knowledge or entertainment value. In my videos you'll be able to tackle the same day-to-day challenges that I do in a upbeat and entertaining way. The videos I post are real-life and based on the hobbies I find myself immersed in here in Central Ontario Canada. With a wide variety of topics, I often find myself bouncing around from cutting wood to mechanical repairs and everything in between. My approach that can be seen in my videos is use what you have and be creative in order to keep the wheels spinning. With such a large portion of the "Sawing with Sandy" property being heavily forested, you'll always find a beautiful scenic backdrop no matter what the video is that I'm making. Keep a close eye out as you scroll through my videos as you're bound to see some wildlife that calls central Ontario Canada home. Glad you folks are here. Here we go!
My Biggest Supporter Lends a Hand at the Sawmill
I couldn't do what I do without support and today my biggest supporter is here to lend a hand. We get down to work and keep that sawmill spinning as the lumber starts piling up in no time.

If there was ever a Swiss Army knife of Brush Cutters, this has got to be it. I'm out in the Lane Shark LS-4 Brush Cutter today cutting back overhanging branches and mowing some tall grass along my trails. With a big rural property like mine, trail maintenance is always something I"m out doing. Lucky for me this brush cutter allows me to retire the pole saw and enjoy the A/C and sludge inside m...

Picking Up Sticks on my Forest Trails without Lifting a Finger

If you've got trails like me, you know what a pain it can be to keep sticks and debris off them. For years I'd walk around throwing sticks off the trails almost daily it seemed until I found out about landscape rakes. These things sure are something else and are my go-to for keeping my trails clear of debris and smooth. Landscape rake shown in this video: MK Martin 84" (7') Landscape Rake www.f...
Why I Bought a Forestry Grapple AND a Skidding Winch

I've never been someone to say you have enough tractor implements and today is no exception. I'm going to be talking about why I bought both a skidding winch and a forestry grapple for my tractor and what I like about both. If you're in the market for either of these pieces of equipment, today is the day to tune in to see what the pros and cons of each are. Glad you're all here to join me, here...
Saving Time Sawing Three Logs at Once
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 21 dnem
Drastic times calls for drastic measures. With more logs than I know what to do with, the time is now to start sawing multiple logs at a time if I ever hope to stay ahead of my red pine thinning plan. With logs mostly the same size, I think I've finally turned a page and can now consistently achieve good cutting while minimizing waste cutting multiple logs at once. Sawmill shown in this video: ...

Why Running My Sawmill is Such a SLOW Process
zhlédnutí 15KPřed 28 dny
If you've ever looked at a pile of my logs on my log deck and wondered how long it takes me to saw them, today's the day to find out. I'm often very ambitious to start out when I see a pile of logs thinking that I'll get to the bottom of them in short time. Nothing could be further from the truth as the time ticks away and the lumber pile slowly-but-surely grows. The actual reason for this slow...

Maybe you could teach your dad how to use it . I bet he likes to have fun 😅
I thought for a second there I was watching the Jetson’s
Great video Sandy it's always better when dad is there. Enjoy the times that you share with him. Mine passed a few months ago but I will cherish the fond memories the rest of my days. Cheers to Everyone!!! 🙂
Sandy anything that keeps me away from those bugs is a great idea 😂
your dad looked like he enjoyed himself ! great stuff
Great video, Really like the opening fast camera footage down the trails of your property
Arachnophobia!
Just curious what lengths are you cutting to and why?
Like seeing pops out working. Dad and I cut may many trees into firewood back in the day. He had a stroke in 2019, no more cutting anything but lunch with him now. Good video, enjoy your dad while ya can.
i leave spider 🕷️ 🕸️ alone as they are fantastic bug catcher especially flying ones even have couple in my home lol they come out to visit every once in awhile Lol almost pets
Is that a 360 camera you're using now? It works very well.
Dad you raised a good boy into a great man! bless you, wish I could be there to shake your hand. Sandy take care of your Dad!
Thank you for the kind words John
👍great video
Thanks for that Paul!
Always good to have help. Good vid. Thanks.
I agree. He's one heck of a hard worker
We are proud of you… you are a wonderful steward of your land… its a real blessing to see young folks like you all be it too few and far between… 👍 keep on keeping on 🎉😊
Thank you Payne and Michella!
I love those portable garages. Every time I lose one to a tree or snow load I'm forced to replace it with another building . All lumber comes from my HM130. Waiting for a good sale so I can buy another one. I've already got the spot ready under a heavy leaning red maple. Trick is to never store anything valuable in them. My wife will never catch on
I'm just like you with waiting for the sales. I usually grab one whenever I can. Even if they only last a few years I find they pay for themselves in saved time.
Hooray for good dad's!!
He's a good one
Thanks Sandy for another video .
Always great to have ya along for the video Brian
a person can always use good help
Absolutely!
Highschool kids graduated by now .. just guessing as don't know how many months kids go to school in canada. What I am getting at is some youngsters that will trade time for boards for their parents maybe and help is good as you have more of a hand with the trim wood being used up. Farm labor here doesn't require high insurances and so more leeway for lower labor costs. Just a thought Sandy
Great food for thought . Thanks Morgan
So that was your Pop, working with you? Next time, introduce him to us. Sandy, if I never give you another piece of advice, it'll be this one: CHERISH every moment you have, every moment you spend with 'the ole man,' doing "Guy stuff" and enjoying one another's company. One day, he will be but a memory, and all you'll have left are the memories. I cherish the time my Pop and I had together, doing whatever, but mostly fishing. Take care, brother...............
Thanks for that Carl. Great advice right there. Time is something that can't be gotten back for sure
Yes sir, lost my dad a carpenter 13 years ago, he'd would have just turned 101 last week. Unfortunately my 2 sons now just in their 50's and far away don't have the same feelings for me as I did for my dad, different generation and work ethics I suppose.
Great intro thanks for the trail ride!! Wonderful when we get to see you work with your Dad 😊 Derek and Michella
Hi Derek and Michella! Great to hear from you both
That great you working with your father. Reminds me of all the years cutting firewood with mine.We worked so long together we never had to say a word. A well oiled machine. Miss ya Pops.
Would've made good memories
My experience with my dad was very similar. It's fortunate that we had fathers that taught us life skills. I miss my Pops too my friend.
Always nice to have help. If I lived closer and was younger, I would love to help in any way I could.😊
Fly to upstate NY, near Niagara Falls… we will all drive up together and force Sandy (and his Dad) to share their coffee - you bring the bug spray!! We will pack donuts ❤ We can show Sandy what he has to look forward to later in life 😊😊👍🎉
Thanks for that gesture Frank!
@payne7028 , well I certainly would share my sludge with good folks like yourselves
It may be a great tool as I seen BUT don't look at the price. I mean like holy ^@^@^ it is very very expensive
hi, instead of using a scraper to clean your logs, buy yourself a leaf blower, it'll go a lot faster, bye
Thanks Michel, I’ll give it a try
Great decision Sandy , keep up awesome content my friend cheers 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
Thanks for all your support!
It looks nice but you didn't fix the problem. The high side are the issue not the center. Go wider knocking down the sides, build up the middle. The water will flow off the road. When pulling down the road the side of the land plane with the blades in the lead will move the dirt to the center. You need a crown to get rid of the water issues. Also a layer of gravel is badly needed! Try to be helpful not trying to criticize hopefully you take this that way!
Thanks for coming along for the video. Unfortunately time , cost and overall trail length prevents me from creating dedicated roads so I’ve found the more practical approach for me is using the land plane from time to time to smooth things out
Ive never seen so much snow in my life.
Absolutely love it. Beautiful job. Inspiring video.
Thank you! Cheers!
I do like that idea Sandy! Nice job!
You may want to get a log grapple, sometimes called a log skidding grapple.
I just got one for the tractor. Sure is a great addition My Logging Operation Just Took a Big Step Forward czcams.com/video/yAgKI5VZ8hE/video.html
That's a nice looking grapple.
Thank you!
Agreed and good luck !
Thanks Mike
Is this your product? Your video is on the website. Is there a smaller version available for small logs and a 5 inch grinder for log furniture etc?
I don’t sell this myself. I got it from Alberta Forest and Garden. I’m not sure if there’s a smaller version as I didn’t see one when I got this one
It’s a great setup the table is key
I think you’re right Russell
A golf cart is not a toy. If that passes as a toy for you I would suggest some more exciting hobbies, like knitting.. lol. Jk
The other looked to be more work this one is faster LOL and not flimsy
I have the wc68 also, and I love it. That new tf810 seems to work very well too, but it looks like it sits lower? not sure if I would like that part. great video
Yeah, why DID you change from that one to the vertical splitter anyway? It's WAY more expensive and you had such a great set up with it pushing the split pieces straight into the tote cage, so you actually handled the wood less with that old setup it seemed. I know you've talked about the control you have with the vertical splitter, but as long as we can fit it in our wood stove I really don't care if my split logs are "pretty." Though I'm thinking that you sell cord wood, so that may be more important to you? In any event, since we need to come up with our own small-scale firewood setup soon, we've very interested in all the details about why you decided to change and whether it's made that big a difference for your scenario. Also whether you think that would apply to a homesteader who is NOT selling cord wood. Many thanks for all your great content!
Good question. I like both the ultra and the axis but I think the axis is a bit more versatile since it allows you to place the wedge right where you want the split to go. With the horizontal splitter there is a little less control since the flat pusher often determines where the round will get pushed into the wedge. The 4 way wedge on the ultra is nice however if you don't have a lot of wood with big knots in it and the rounds aren't too large. If the rounds are too large then the ultra will require you to split a few times to break down the larger rounds. On the axis the larger rounds are easily handled as you control where the wedge goes through the round. both machines have good working height so that's not an issue. both have large working area. Axis has the advantage of the conveyor option and the log lift. The log lift I don't use as often as I do the conveyor which I find is a huge game changer. I like the versality of the conveyor and how it allows the wood to drop from a height so it spreads out nicely in the IBC cages. Wood falling off the end of my ultra did go into the IBC cage but it didn't disperse as well as the conveyor.
@@sawingwithsandy Got it, thank you!
@@sawingwithsandy Would you say it's worth the vastly more expensive price tag if all you need is fire wood for your own homestead in your opinion?
I think it depends on whether you have large rounds with knots you’ll be splitting often and whether you want a log lift and conveyor option. In that case the axis would be what I’d go for
Old times. Now you're a vertical guy!
I still think back to the Ultra. Was a great machine!
Did you go back in time for this one? 😁
Yessir
Are you going to do The LOG FATHER challenge
Hey Brian! I haven’t heard about it. What’s that challenge?
@sawingwithsandy how fast you can split a cord of fire wood The log Father is in Nova Scotia
Ah right on. I did this a month or two ago Face Cord CHALLENGE ACCEPTED czcams.com/video/r9sRapn6qw4/video.html
Hello Sandy. This is an impressive machine as it is. It would be cool if the configuration could be changed from the cab, but that would mean a complete rework of the tool to accommodate the hydraulics. It does not seem to be a burden at all for your tractor. Have good days!
Thank you sir! Sure is a handy unit to keep my trails clear. Great to have ya along for the video Buddy Reed!
Went through the same 15 years ago. And i didnt elect to have my 15 acre pine lot thined. The logger was going to leave 30% of the trees. Many other owner on st joesph island ontario did. Result varied. Many lost to wind damage.. im glad i didnt. Im 70 and have been thinning for 5 years cut nearly 20 th feet. And it felt good then you said you could only do 5 trees a day. Lastly why dont try to get a sponsor for a bobcat feller buncher. Would love to see results of that. Great job on your web and cheers.
Keep sourcing the blow down, deal with the thinning in winter, the wood keeps well at that time of year, find urself customers to sell the excess to
This is by far the best simplest explanation of how to do a birdsmouth cut I have seen!! I have watched many videos and wow wish I would've watched this one first! Thanks 😉👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Wendy!

Just caught your video so a little late to the party! Just wondering if it would work with just a regular third-function connection? If not, what alteration would be required. I have a Kubota L4060 with a dealer installed third-function that runs my grapple. It has the rocker switch installed on the joystick. Regards.
I’m not 100% but I believe what makes the third function kit I have a bit different is it is continuous flow so the hydraulic fluid doesn’t flow back through the valve but instead goes directly to the tractor sump which keeps the system from having any issue with hydraulic fluid temperature increase
Only a barbarian would cut framing to length with a chainsaw. Lol
Lol
