  • Jason uses the skidoo skandic wide track to groom logging trails for woodlot access. The last snow storm was heavy enough to limit the ATV and Kranman log loader making it more difficult to yard wood back into the house. Grooming the trails will provide a good base and smooth road for future Winter firewood log production.

    I got a buddy of mine who lived over in Kirkland. He ran a 2018 Tundra for grooming the provincial trails with much the same drag as you folks have.

      Kirkland is pretty close to us. Who was it?

    Excellent video once again. My trail groomer is very similar to yours except that it is shorter. Smart design feature that it is reversible...never thought of doing that. Another difference with mine is that I have a pan at the back that normally will fill with snow and help flatten down the trail. I would give the father//designer the benefit of the doubt.... I'm sure the failure you experienced is actually a built-in weak-link/safety-feature to ensure that you don't damage your skidoo or injure yourself. I caught on a stump last winter and came to a sudden stop, kissing the ATV windscreen and bending the groomer...ouch. You are right to groom the trail at the end of the day. It fills the small ruts and builds up a much better base. Another important factor is that by having a smooth trail, you greatly reduce the effort on the tractor or ATV to move forward, therefore reducing the risk of spinning and sinking

      I have been looking at the "happy trails" groomers. I think they are based out of Ontario. They look pretty nice but are expensive to buy. The backhoe used about $400 in fuel to keep my trails open this year. I was wondering if a snowblower on the front of my RTV and a happy trails groomer on behind might be the answer... Blower would move the bulk of the snow and a proper groomer on behind would smooth and compact whatever stays behind...

      @@OakMountainAcotts Yep, I have seen the Happy Trails groomer but since we were at our first season, and on a restricted budget, we decided to test with a homemade groomer. Also, since I only learned how to weld 2 years ago, it gave me an excuse for another welding project. I guess everything is a compromise. The only snow blower we have is end of life and we are using it only for the main driveway. It is also a rear driving snow blower and there is no way I would survive driving backward for all the trails. Our trails are not perfectly flat and this would cause problems. I find that running the groomer is one of the most satisfying job on the woodlot. I just love the looks of the trails after doing a run. Just went for long walk today on beautiful trails. Grooming the trails is also fairly fast process once you have you base. A lot depends on the type of winter we get. Last year was perfect with little snow, coming in in small amounts at a time. This year is more difficult with more snowfalls and in greater amounts at a time....and my crystal ball is no good at season forecast. I won't bullshit you on your suggestion of a blower on RTV with a groomer on the back since I have no experience with that equipment. I'll be following your progress

      @Yves Jolicoeur thanks Yves... I was looking at some close ups of the happy trails groomer. I just bought a little mig welder and I don't see anything there I couldn't fabricate myself! I think the key is to make them a little heavier so they will actually cut in a little. I may try to build one for behind my RTV if I get some free time this summer but as you know, there is always too many things to do and not enough time. The woodlot is not my primary source of income so it has to take a second seat to my main job! Today would have been a beautiful day to cut some firewood but I chose to watch my eldest son play hockey instead! Take care, Jason.

      @@OakMountainAcotts yep, everything is a compromise but family time should always be top of the list. It's funny but since I was pulling the groomer behind my small ATV, one of the top design criteria was for it to be light enough so that I could manhandle it on the few trails were we don't have a turn around at the end. It will actually load up with snow in the pan and become fairly heavy then. If I need to pull it sideway by hand, I just clear the snow from the pan and have a light weight unit to move around

    Hi, how cold is it where you live at this time of the year, Regards Sven-Erik from Norway

    • @OakMountainAcotts
      @OakMountainAcotts  Před 3 lety

      It usually stays between -10 C and -20 C. We like it when it is between 0 and -15 C, any colder than that, especially with a windchill, we will stay inside and drink hot chocolate! Is it the same for you guys in Norway?

      @@OakMountainAcotts yes it is the same here, it has been between -10 and -20c here the last 3 weeks now, good for cutting logs on my Logosol M7 saw mill. And yes i take some chocolate breaks during the day 😊
