This song references a poem by Audie Murphy, as well as the movies he starred in. Including To Hell and Back were he played himself in the story of war exploits. Audie Murphy was awarded every medal of Heroism available, he was killed in a plane crash.
The Crosses Grow On Anzio
Oh, gather 'round me, comrades
And listen while I weep;
Of a war, a war, a war...
where hell is six feet deep.
Along the shore, the cannons roar.
Oh how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio
And hell is six feet deep.
Praise be to God for this captured sod
That's rich where blood does seep;
With yours and mine, like butchered swine;
And hell is six feet deep.
That death does wait
There's no debate;
No triumph will we reap
The crosses grow on Anzio,
Where hell is six feet deep.
Audie Murphy
My grandfather, his brothers, an 'uncle', great-grandfather, all were forbidden to talk about what happened when they came back. My grandfather was a prisoner of war held in Stalingrad and the reinwiesen. The 'uncle' also was a prisoner of war. He came back about nine years after the war ended. Terrible times.
Excellent reaction to an amazing song about an amazing person. Joakim has an affinity for Audie Murphy. He has visited his grave at Arlington and they named their first tank drum riser Audie in memory of him. Murphy's son has attended a concert, giving the band a poster from the movie (starring Murphy) "To Hell and Back" which is about his WW2 service. Many of the stanzas in this song are from a poem written by Murphy after the war called "The Crosses Grow on Anzio." Audie Murphy died in a plane crash and was buried in Arlington National Cemetary, where his grave is the second most visited after President Kennedy.
Yeah 7 years in the British army (royal tank regiment) gunner in the challenger 2 multiple deployments and lost very close friends and unfortunately had to watch 2 of my buddies I was in basic with be taken out by IEDs I will never forget the images,smell and sounds been out the army a good few years now and still nightmares but besides the PTSD I've got other mental health issues which has landed me on psychiatric wards multiple times its funny when I came home people saying you have changed yes I have the person you knew died when I went on my deployments and what you see is me now
Nice to finally make it to a premier. This song is one of the first I ever heard by Sabaton. I'd never seen the video until now, so thanks for that. It hits differently with the extra visuals.
This song from Sabaton is probably one of few songs that I always choke when I try to sing along with. The history, the person, and the journey that's compressed into this song is simply overwhelming. I don't even know how to properly convey such an intense and enduring somberness; the kind that bleeds in every next sentence in the lyrics, of which chorus I've come to learn came from Audrey Murphy's own poem. It was...difficult to not reflect back after knowing more about the man behind the history.
To capture such intensity in a song is nothing short of a masterwork.
Fun fact..
Audie Murphy was the foreground figure for John Rambo in David Morell's book First blood..
I so love your reactions to Sabaton! I wish the US would wake up to music other than the mainstream commercial fare. The stories that Sabaton shares and, in many cases, provide enough of a history lesson to ignite the desire to go learn more and deepens the appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members for each of their own countries.❤🤘🤘🤘💙

. . . Audie Murphy, 1948
So the movie Hell and Back was the story of Audie Murphy. It was so unbelievable that anyone could do what Murphy did, they had Audie play himself in the movie.
Another story was he was on trail for attempted murder and he was found not guilty because “if Audie Murphy wanted to kill you, you’d be dead.”
This video 's imagery is fantastic. Sabaton never misses.
sabaton lady of the dark animated story video another heroine awaits you
❤❤
Audie Murphy died in a private plane crash in Virginia.🇺🇸
so got to do their history channel on this 1 - czcams.com/video/n0PriUnAJ3U/video.htmlsi=Jy8d0gWl89If7trC
Oh I couldn´t agree more! This man was bravery personified.

And that's Audie Murphy playing himself in the movie with the title.. that's right.. To hell and back.
While they do sing about war a lot, they do not glorify it as such. 1916 and Christmas Truce are somewhat cautionary tales as well.
Sounds like you have a ground problem with your gear mate!
Other then that Great reaction!
Some people complain Sabaton overdoes the anthemic, epic sound, but they ain’t singing about army clerks who collated and stapled above and beyond the call of duty. I friggin’ LOVE IT.
