    If you are planning to travel in Mexico, specifically to Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, or any other Riviera Maya destination, we hope this video helps make your trip more enjoyable. These are ways that we were scammed in these cities in Mexico, despite speaking Spanish and currently living in the country.
    We think some of the behavior in Playa del Carmen and these other locations is unethical, wrong, and dishonest. We don't want other people to fall into tourist traps (ike we did) because they didn't know what to look for or how to stick up for themselves. Most of these scams happened on 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen) and also in Cozumel.
    Scams and Tourist Traps We Discuss:
    - Taxi scams in Cancun, Mexico
    - Tipping cab drivers in Mexico
    - Extra charges on the bill for substitutions
    - Two for one drinks in Playa del Carmen
    - Adding random things to the bill
    - Charging different prices than the menu says
    - Ordering water at a restaurant in Mexico
    - Forced gratuity added to the bill in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel
    - What to tip in Mexico
    - How to avoid getting scammed in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel
    - What to do when you're getting scammed
    HONEST RESTAURANTS WE RECOMMEND:
    1. Lido Beach Club in Playa del Carmen
    2. Carboncitos in Playa del Carmen
    3. Tequila Beach Club in Cozumel
    4. Madrez Cafe in Playa del Carmen
    5. Tequila Barrel in Playa del Carmen
    Do you have any questions about scams in Cancun / Playa del Carmen / Cozumel? Ask in the comments! We don't want anyone to be taken advantage of while they're in Mexico (or anywhere else for that matter).

    We lived in Mexico in the mid 80's and have loved our travels throughout this beautiful and cultured country for many years since. My husband is now 81 and we cannot risk getting into situations that didnt concern us 40 years ago. We have a couple of favorite resort areas, but these days we do not drive ourselves, instead we have the resort pick us up from the airport, we have a small grocery order delivered to our condo via a service, and we enjoy the resort property, choosing to stay put for the week. We make friends with the waiters and watch the ocean from our cabana with a good margarita in hand, have an early supper at a resort restaurant. Life changes and you change with it. We were once your age and had the same sense of adventure! I love your videos.

      That's a great story. My ex landlord is in his early 80s and travels frequently to Hawaii and The Philippines. That's great that you can find time to do things you enjoy and yes no need to get caught up in the confusion of new travellers who often miss things that more seasoned travellers, even young ones, catch on to. I often smile and say no to everything. If I want something, I'll go find it or have it delivered. There's so much info online and services offered to take a step into a potentially bad situation. Cheers.

    Guys, for those who arrive in Cancun airport and needs to go to Playa del Carmen or Cancun, use ADO bus, cheap and comfy. If you arrive late, after midnight, you can take a collectivo van to Cancun (costs around 200-250 pesos; a taxi to Cancun would cost around 400-500 pesos in day time, 1000-2000 pesos night time), they will take you to the ADO bus station in Cancun. And if you need to go to Playa, you take a van close to that ADO to Playa del Carmen, you'll see them screaming PLAYA PLAYA PLAYA. They run until like 3-4am (Cancun never sleeps). That van to Playa would be like 80 pesos at night. 50 pesos day time.

    We were in Cancun in Sep 2018, we had great experiences with using a taxi app called Easy Taxi, which is very similar to Uber. Their prices are amazing and you can see how much it cost to get to your destination beforehand. Best part is that you can see a picture of the driver and his reviews!! We were also very impressed most of this cabs had a/c and were cleaned.

    I'm from Mexico City and pretty much everything you said is on point, 10% is the rule for tipping sevices. Taxis and such are usually not tipped, though I once tipped a shuttle driver because he gave a historical account of the place while driving so it was for the extra show. I'ts sad that there are so many people trying to scam, it's unfortunately a problem in many parts of Mexico, and it's not only to tourists. I myself have never understand it, I have learned to be wary of these things constantly while growing up. These people ignorantly assume that any tourist is loaded with money, specially with foreigners. As others have said don't hesitate to burn them on social media, for example hotels are very vigilant of what you write on Tripadvisor, it really does affect their business so they have no choice but to improve. As for taxis just avoid them all you can, they are the worst in any mexican city. Use Uber, shuttles, buses (like ADO), rented car etc. All but taxis, it should be your last resort.

    So I am a Gringo that has lived in Mexico a couple times on the West Coast. I just visited Cancun for the first time June 2021. Honestly, I was shocked at the amount of scams and absurd prices they were charging. My advice to those traveling to the East Coast of Mexico, stay at an all inclusive. Set up your travel to and from the airport before you arrive, and don't go off site unless it is through your hotel. Or, just go to the West Coast of Mexico, where it seems like the locals are a lot nicer and less likely to try and take advantage of you.

I get really angry when people badly criticize places they've never been because they've heard a rumor. Like everywhere else, one must be cautious. Oh, I've had a few instances myself but I wouldn't let it stop me from going to Mexico. In a lot of cases, when people go to Mexico, it's an excuse to get drunk and be publicly annoying to all around them. Bet they wouldn't act like asses at home!! The local citizens don't do that, so why should the tourists. I've witnessed some pretty disgusting behaviour from tourists in the 25 years I've been going to Mexico. Be respectful, people. This country is showing courtesy and civility to the tourists. Keep your nose clean and you won't get into trouble or offend the "locals". These people are extremely hard working and deserve the tips given to them.

      +1 for USA Transfers. I have used them for 7 or 8 trips to PDC, Cancun, or Playa Mujeres. Yes, more expensive than a bus. But… they are there when you land and take your party in a private, clean, well-maintained van, always with a courteous driver and greeting staff. Depending how far you go, it’s about $40-60, plus tip. They pick you up moments after exiting the terminal and take you straight to your hotel. We once also booked a tour through them to Chichineza (sp?) and Talmud. Our guide was Phd and spoke perfect English, price included all tolls, etc.

    Loved your new video! I'm an expat who moved back to Canada after living for four years in Playa Del Carmen and I was also shocked at the level of scams and general unethical behavior there, it's largely why I left. I've also been all over Mexico, I loved Los Mochis, San Blas, Palenque - so many other places to visit in this amazing country - but the Yucatan is rife with scams and overall thievery and it's exhausting to visit, let alone live there. Something that you possibly hadn't considered is it's particularly bad for crime and the 'hustle' as I called it, because there's a few cruise ship stops in this region. The tourists are there for four to six hours and back on the ship immediately, never to be seen again. I learned from asking a number of locals where they'd moved from and overwhelmingly they've come from Campeche. If you're a poor person who had moved from Campeche to seek a way better financial life in this beach tourist area - and it didn't pan out the way they'd planned (and which happened a LOT), of course they wouldn't care about ripping off the "gringo," the incoming tourists are transient - It doesn't make it alright but it was interesting to learn where this mind-set came from. It's really too bad that visitors get occasionally ripped off, it's such an amazing region - but the perpetual 'hustle' really ruins this area, I'd rather visit Valladolid or Merida instead. Cheers!

Cancun is no longer local people. Many of them have moved from other states. There are good and bad people. If you visit small places you will see what I mean. There is big difference. Merida, Izamal, Chelem, etc.

    I just read about this in the journal and I'm so ashamed because now tourists gonna think that all people here wants to scam them and that's not true. I used to visit my girlfriend in Cancun before I finally moved here, everytime I saw tourists waiting for a taxi outside the bus station (ADO) I used to tell them not to take those taxis and to give them some advices to not be scammed because unfortunately a lot of people here thinks it's right to take advantage from the tourists. I personally hate that and so many times I've given advices or even work as a sort of tourist guide lol to help them avoid that kind of people and restaurants. If you ever come back (I hope you do :( ) feel free to contact me and ask about anything, same for people who reads this and it's thinking about coming to Cancun, I love this place and I love when people comes and shares the world the beauty from my country so I don't want our reputation to go to waste because of some fvckers who thought It would be great to scam tourists just because they don't know anything about prices or the language. Then I bought a 94 pesos ADO ticket which is like 5 dolars (the prices were displayed there, there is also an app) from the very nice ado desk lady and that was it. They leave every 30 min from each terminal and it takes like 25 minutes. You can take r-1 or r-2 from the main boulevard to hotel zone. In the hotel zone you get offered tours, massages and taxis all the time but you just ignore it or refuse, nobody asked a second time.

  • @alexmontoya4136
    @alexmontoya4136 Před 5 lety +116

    Please read this:
    I agree with the most of it, I just want to clear out two points so you can see the other side and draw your own conclusions:
    I'm mexican and I have waitered in Cancun, and restaurants do charge for using avocado instead of the guacamole they have already contemplated for the day, small food businesses don't charge you because you are dealing directly with the owner, but tourist zone restaurants are afraid of employees stealing avocados (which are expensive here) by saying they were used as "extras"; the reason you had to argue to get it removed is because only the manager on duty can authorize the exception.
    Regarding tipping at restaurants in Cancun and Riviera Maya, just like you said, it's not Morelia, in Cancun there's something called "tira" (pronounced "tee-rah"), waiters are obliged to share usually 7 to 12% of their shift's grand total (not from tips, the actual total sold money) with the kitchen, the hostess, their supervisor, manager, etc. That's how tipping less than 10% hurts their pocket, as a mexican I always tip 15% unless I received bad service, if you have noticed a waiter trying to sneak stuff into the check on purpose then I agree with no tip and contest, but when I waitered I did my best and received lots of compliments from my clients, and still sometimes I had to pay out of my pocket instead of bringing tips home because of people tipping less than 10% (ask any random waiter at a Riviera Maya tourist zone restaurant: "how much "tee-rah" do you pay?" and they'll respond with a %, that's how much tip they don't keep, no bull), note: this "tee-rah" thing usually does not apply within hotels, only at restaurants and bars.
    Thank you very much for informing tourists about the bad behaviors you mentioned, for us who try to make you feel home at Mexico it's insulting to see how some people give bad reputation to our country with these kinds of actions.

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  Před 5 lety +5

      Hey Alex, thanks for providing another valuable perspective! We had heard of waiters having to split tips with other staff at fancier restaurants, so higher percentages are more common at those kinds of places around Mexico. Do you know if the wait staff in Cancun typically pays tira at lower-end restaurants as well, (like a cheap taco joint, for example)?

    • @alexmontoya4136
      @alexmontoya4136 Před 5 lety +5

      I'm not saying that in Mexico we don't have bad apples, we do have them and a lot of them! But, be fare and honest on what you post on You Tube. Do your research. You guys may have learned a lot about our culture in the short time you have lived in Mexico. But, I don't think you have learned enough,... :)
      I would like to point out that here in the USA people drink water from the faucets, and it's OK. That's something we don't do in Mexico. I grew up in Guerrero state and lived for many years in Mexico, City. Every city or town is different, but in general we don't do that because the water is not treated as it is in the USA..... I never drenk water from faucet where I grew up and neither in the capital. I did drenk many times from streams when hiking in the mountains, and I never got sick. Lol
      I rarely drink water from the faucet here in the USA, because I'm not used to and I'm always thinking that is not drinkable. But my husband is always, "it's okay!"
      So, if you order tap water in a restaurant, it will be free but you take a risk,...
