As great as he is, I disagree with Arnold. Bodybuilding was never about health, even bodybuilders in Arnold's era were taking dangerous substances.
Bodybuilding, like any other art evolves over time. Judges don't like what they used to. The reason why bodybuilding in Arnold's era was different was because that's all they could do. Same reason why bronze era bodybuilders had small chests, because bench pressing wasn't a thing back then. It had to do with limits, not choice. Golden era bodybuilders had small legs, due to a lack of equipment, they essentially had only squats to build the legs.
Today's bodybuilders have the equipment, anabolics ,research that Golden age bodybuilders didn't have. Hence the increase in mass.
It feels very intellectual to preach moderation but when it comes to bodybuilding, more is just better. Aesthetics is very important but it should not overtake the place of size and development. It's a freak show not a beauty pageant contest. If it was all about aesthetics you might as well judge competitors by their jawline.
