Billy Corgan’s voice is like your first taste of beer, definitely an acquired taste, but oh so worth it once you become familiar with it.
My wife hates his voice and him 🤷🏽♂️
Johnny Johnson well your wife sucks, you can tell her I said it so you don’t get slapped when you tell her she sucks
His voice has changed & NOT for the better. I couldn't get thru this rendition.
what a perfect analogy >
Getting drunk on some Billy Corgan voice again! Premium Billy! ❤️❤️❤️
wow the nostalgia.. I'm 43.. That brought back some old memories.. Enjoy your youth people... Don't let it pass you by too fast
The youth of today won't have it as good as us (I'm 42 ) music was way better back in the day.
43 still young
Wait, but your life isn't so bad at 43 right? I hate to think that just because youth is gone the best days of our lives are gone.
Oh it's long past.. 😂
I'm trying at 32
Love how smooth his chord transitions are.
Exactly
He rarely gets credit for what an exquisite guitar player he is.
You can do this too! It’s not too hard!
@Philip Demers I read he was basically considered a virtuoso.
@@CharlieRootsMusic He’s very good, but that’s a term that gets thrown around a bit too much these days. He doesn’t need to be one, because he’s great at what he does.
"I know you better than you can fake it". Brilliant.
@Philip Kerr stick to your shitty Autotune then. That line is obviously over your head anyways.
One of the best written songs top to bottom, period.
The best line in great lyrics
@@sonyboy8638 He just means he understands a person enough to know when they are hiding how they feel.
@@rickyskellham6131 Ahh yes, now that you say it it seems almost obvious. But to be honest i had no idea either.
I used to wait every weekend for this song in MTV Countdown. No youtube or spotify or iTunes. You need to wait for your favorite song to play over the radio or in MTV if you haven’t bought the cassette tape.
I love you
We were all more connected then. Miss those days
I know what you mean! I'm only 27 so Im in the generation that eventually gravitated towards limewire/Spotify with music on demand. But I used to just sit through whole rotations patiently, until the handful of songs of my liking came on.
Ana Lyn and I waited every weekend for you
I miss those times
Definitely not an easy acoustic version to sing along to whilst playing it. Billy Corgan is a legend!
I was thinking the same thing!
It’s actually not that hard lol
I love playing this song on guitar and is great on an acoustic, very true it’s bloody hard to play & sing as Billy’s vocal phrasing & melodies are brilliant and hard to master, but with a bit of practice I’ve got this song sounding pretty damn good if I say so myself, always room for improvement though, I love the rawness of this track and to me music brings so much more emotion when played with some vulnerability and not spot on perfect, although Billy’s playing is faultless on this performance and sounds quality, every time I hear this song it always brings a tear to my eye taking me back to happy & sad times in my late teens/early 20’s in the 90’s, the power of music & performance and the emotions it can bring to me is an amazing feeling and is what I love about also being a songwriting musician myself, the power of music & emotions brings much solace in my life.
Not easy??? It’s one of the easiest songs to play on guitar and sing. He’s just speeding it up and phoning it in here.
@@sinjon I learnt it today. I forgot how long it is though 😅 70% of the time I will master it 😬
That percussive and insistent strumming is genius - it sounds both like a car speeding fast and time rushing by. Musical genius for sure.
That can't be an easy song to play and sing at the same time. Then again, that's why he's a rock star and I'm just a jerk on the internet.
an important jerk to someone tho.
You're not that bad...
Bob Donovan it is for me and I’m pretty decent. Billy is incredible!
Better to be a jerk on the Internet than to jerk off to the Internet (not mutually exclusive).
I'm a good guitar player, but singing at the same time is still so frickin hard for me to this day. So yeah when I see Billy do this I'm pretty much in awe as well.
In a weird way this song forever reminds me of a time in my life that I didn’t know at the time but one day would miss terribly.
Never know what you’ve got until it’s gone. A cliché phrase but only because of it’s truthfulness
Like milk time at school
SW Pags You must be in your 30s
believe me. you had no idea you'd miss the time you wrote this.
That's the beauty and sadness of living
The ability to write and perform original music that touches peoples souls for generations is rare and underappreciated. Billy is a gift to the world, as are those few like him.
Deffo, along with Chris Cornell 😢 R.I.P
Underappreciated no way
I’m 29 and I have a lot of nostalgia when I hear Smashing Pumpkins. I grew up with my mom introducing me to bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, and R.E.M. I remember her buying me the tapes and then eventually we upgraded to CDs. We’ve grown apart over the years and aren’t so close anymore. But I hold on to the memories of those better times. Thanks, mom.
I'm 129 and I approve this message
Go phone your mum and chat about the music, rekindle the relationship and just talk. We only have 1 mum, cherish her before she’s gone. ❤

Call her up ❤ I bet she thinks of you too
Tell your mum this exact thing
one of the best songs ever written
I'm in awe that he can reproduce the tone and emotion of this song with an acoustic guitar. Amazing.
Matthew Douglas everything is better acoustic! ;)
Why? It's a melodic song that inherently translates well to a stripped-down "unplugged" rendition.
Matthew Douglas
No lie. I thought I heard another Guitar then realized he was over dubbing the Sound with his IPad.
yeah that was impressive, but he knows the song inside and out, it was his creation... I'd be honored if some mid/late 90s fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of LONG DECEMBER by the Counting Crows, HIGH & DRY by Radiohead, and NAME by the GooGoo Dolls on my channel in tribute to the era. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace out.
That's probably how he wrote it
This song has helped me through so many tough times. Thank you, Billy.
This song was the king of nostalgia when it was first released. I don’t know why, it just invoked this powerful sense of days long gone that were very much missed. I’m taken back to my teenage years the moment I hear it. This is, arguably, Smashing Pumpkins best song.
Completely agree.
AGREED BUD! :)
💯‼️❤️🔥
I was thinking exactly the same thing 👍
Rhinoceros is sooo much better
There's a musician who has kept up with his skill.
He's rushing the song but his voice sounds really good!
@@whatdothlife4660 he's keeping the young audiences attention
Loren Darcy he’s not rushing anything, he’s just playing it faster probably to get it over with
disagreed completely
That happens sometimes lol
The 90s. Love that I lived it. Sad it's gone. If you weren't there, I'm sorry you missed it. Concerts were unlike any other. Music was real and full of emotion. 70s music was cool, 80s were fun, 90s was real and indescribable. Billy and crew take me back every time. I'm 43 now and still listen and play the pumpkins almost every day. Glad hes still here along with Eddie. Too many greats are gone.
Eddie Money?
Agreed
80s were better.. you're just too young to know better :)
Same age here. Yeah, the ‘90s was different. I often refer to the genre as the generation of depression because of the depths that the music reached. Sadness, melancholy & dreariness seemed rampant. Perhaps there’s a cycle of emotion that’s played out in each generation. Or maybe each generation gravitates to an emotion as a response of being the victim of the previous generations emotion?
@Alejandro Moreno It's just another person who thinks his generation's music was the best, which of course it isn't. But I think we can all agree that pop and rock music have been abysmal these past 20 years :)
Billy is such a fantastic guitar player.
This song is like a time machine. You will never get old listening to this one. Blessed to experienced the 90's music.
Wow! I'm shocked. Most rockstar's voices sound worse with age, to me, but Billy sounds even better than the original recording. There's just a fullness and richness to his voice that I don't remember him having. So good!
I agree that his voice may have improved.
His vocal technique was pretty bad live when he was younger. He might be more serious with it now. But he was a great guitar player and songwriter back then of course, and on records his vocals sounded good. Live not so much.
He took voice lessons about 15 years back. I like the way he sings either way, but really prefer the 'raw' Billy : )
The thing is back in the day he was being more of a vocalist than a singer.... he was constantly trying to do all sorts of affectations that wasn’t really in the realm of proper technique, and it really came across live where he was trying to make things rock harder or whatever. I believe he learned proper technique since. j Mascis is another hero of mine like this, he’s able to properly sing in tune now.
He sounds great 🎙💥
Wow! He’s still got it. I could listen to an entire show with just him and an acoustic guitar.
You might want to check out his recent performance 'Neath The Darkest Eves' ;)
Well he played a bunch of those
Of course. He still has it, he ain't nobody dinosaur
Hes doing just that in Europe now. The states in the fall
Their Bridge School Benefit show was acoustic, it's on CZcams
Absolute masterpiece.
Yes, A great great song. A perfectly constructed pop song.
Now he's in charge of the NWA wrestling. What a career.
People are commenting on his guitar skills: remember, as an adolescent he was tested and deemed to be a prodigy in terms of his apparent musical ability. He scored so high on a standardized test he was made to take it again - it was thought to be a fluke, yet he got an even higher score. Moreover, once he learned guitar, he could play in that Eddie Van Halen/shredder level style. There are home videos of him just tearing it up on guitar. So, yes, the guy has natural talent in spades. No wonder he was writing hit records in his early twenties.
He's also playing right handed guitar while being left handed. Im the same way, learning his songs i learned some pretty clever ways to combat playing backwards. His muting of strings instead of not strumming them or keeping his hand in motion and lifting the pick to not play but keep momentum in his right hand helped me immensely. I didnt realize how hard his songs really were to learn when i learned to play lefty lol. Your barriers are your gifts to think differently than the rest i suppose.
Yea. But I don't enjoy his music. So....what's your point?
Philip Kerr I’m a lefty and play guitar right handed. As in I write with my left hand and definitely not ambidextrous in that regard. Although it’s kind of a forced habit to play righty because I originally would have played lefty, but due to not realizing you could mirror guitar hero I got more comfortable with a righty playing style. And I definitely cannot play lefty. The point I’m trying to make is that most lefties are born lefty and learn to be ambidextrous not because of natural preferences but more so convenience and how most things are designed.
@Philip Kerr No. He didn't hear it from anyone. He just made it up. People like making up storys in comment sections
He practiced at least 3 hours a day every day since he was a teenager
I can't believe this song was 22 years ago.
And 1979 was almost 40 years ago.
These are things that make me go FAWK!
yeah.....i was only 13 that time.....what a moment of life!!! great music and ppl were nice and music were phenomenal..bands were cool and lyrics were great. miss those sweet moment! :-)
I was 21 when it came out and it seems like yesterday.fuck.
I was born in 1979 and I remember when this song was new. Now it and I are old. Damn
Jesus christ 22 years ago...
Takes me back to wearing flannel and airwalk shoes in school in the 90s
I wore Airwalks too. We knew what was cool huh J Smith! Always loved this song and their version of Landslide.
Shit dude I still do LOL
GOD I miss those days!
😂😂😂😂
Motherfuckin Airwalks
Right there with you on that man. My airwalk nexts and my board tearing up the curbs at the bank etc. Nostalgia brother. Such a sweet time for tunes too.
Norm Macdonald has a great voice.
Gotta new found respect for Billy. That's a hard lick to play and sing at the same time. Damn good job
Guys, we had this song when we were young.
And if we still like it now, it means we are still young at hearts.
I'd be honored if some mid/late 90s fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of LONG DECEMBER by the Counting Crows and NAME by the GooGoo Dolls on my channel in tribute to the era. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace out.
Gaaayeeee
❤️❤️❤️🤗❤️❤️❤️
That also tells me im getting old 😕
I had Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness a double album which featured the track 1979. Classic album and a classic song.
I love his use of open chords, this song is a real masterpiece.
My first concert was SP in 1996 at MSG...16 years old and a whole world of music opened up for me.
The 90’s were truly the best. I turned 40 last week and I would love to go back and relive an amazing time.
Absolutely. Bush, Alice in chains, collective soul... 90s music was top tier
Boy, what a flood of teenage memories rushed in while listening to this song. Music truly is a time machine...
I remember beautiful moments of my youth with this song, i was in college 1996 Puebla, México, i will never forget those days, beer, weed, cigarretes and The Smashing Pumpkins.
Same here Bro. Started college in 1996, spring semester. Talking about this makes me want to say something memorable, like when Richard Dreyfus (narrating the movie Stand by Me) mentions never having friends again like he did when he was 12. Here's to our youth, which we will forever lose 🍻
A todo dar!
Octavio Andrade Jr. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Amem, brother!
Don't ''Miss'' it.,,, but' Do be ''Care full' Though. eh.? ha.
Cant believe the 90s were so long ago when i was in h.s.
you old as
Me too!
I was born in 1994
Same. 😭😭
Everything I love musically would have been around were I your age. I really envy you. Half of my favourite musician are either dead or not producing music and the other half are old and not in their prime. Consider yourself lucky, as I'm sure you do.
This is so impressive!! The way he plays that on acoustic is incredible.
If you close your eyes you'll swear you are hearing 2 or 3 guitars. This is just brilliant from one of my favorite rock singers ever !!
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Damnit! I was 16 when this song came out. Good times, great friends, and youth. It sure made for some fun, crazy, sad, happy, horny, etc, etc, times lol. Enjoy your youth, it's gone in the blink of an eye. 🎸🎸
Chad Hyde m
Enjoy every day because they are all gone in the blink of an eye.
That means you were born in 1979, right?
Fortnite
Days drag on and the years fly by. I'm 37 so I feel you.
A song about Billy's nostalgia for his teenage years late 70s/early 80s,...that makes us all nostalgic for the 90s.....This song is timeless...
When a song can set your mind dials to navigate across space and time to either a happier period or a trying one, it's magic. this is very much one of those.
I never owned any albums of SP when I was a kid. I'm 37
When I hear his music now I always get emotional.
I guess I secretly loved their music the whole time
this happens to me a lot. I'd say some of the old time songs really annoyed me as a kid but now they all get me so nostalgic. i drown myself in the music i "disliked".
I think you may have loved to hate it when you were younger not actually realising the actual emotions and chords it was really striking until now that you’re a little older & wiser and understanding & appreciating it more as we mature. I love this track it has always brought a tear to my eye each time I hear it, the power of music & performance to myself is truly an amazing feeling and why I am a songwriting musician and sing & play everyday of my life and will do everyday till the day I die, it brings much solace no matter how I’m feeling.
Exact same thing with pumpkins for me. I was a Nirvana kid and got into heavier music. Looking back now its the pumkin songs man. They get me every single time....
I thought this would be terrible but it was awesome. BC still has it.
Same. I didn't know what to expect, but he nailed it!
Why did you think it would be terrible?
I remember making the drive from the Bay Area to Chico listening to the Smashing Pumpkins on that long stretch of highway. Memories.
This is friggin priceless. Pure genius. 2 thumbs up .
One of the best songs of all time...BC is so talented it is crazy
Who is justine?
Wow. He for sure still has it!! Living legend!!
This song is my totem, it's a window to the 90s, to my favorite years
I'm so glad Billy didn't overdose back in the he day as many others, in top of that he turned out such a normal dude who lived to be a legend.
Imagine Billy playing mayonnaise acoustically, just him.
It's literally the first video on youtube if you look up mayonaise acoustic..
oh how I wish... my fave SP song!
for a second there, i though about billy playing an actual jar of mayonnaise lmao
Look up “smashing pumpkins-mayOnnaise
Don't tell me what to imagine. Just for spite, I'm imagining him eating mayonnaise, nakedly. Gross.
Hey, internet, if you're going to imagine Billy Corgan eating mayonnaise, I suggest putting some clothes on him. I'm not telling you what to imagine, like some people [cough pokerworld cough], just making a suggestion based on personal experience.
Top 10 song of the 90s
Bill Burr has such a weird singing voice, but it's super charming in its own unique way. Hell of a songwriter!
EASILY one of my all-time favorite riffs to play. It just has a certain feeling to it that makes me happy every time I play it.
He has such a unique voice but it’s great 👍🏻
garyfrombuffalo Thats one of the Main reasons they were One of my top Fav . bands.Plus I love his Abstract Song writing.
I like this performance, but I truly prefer the voice he had in '90 and early '00...
Studio does the magic. He never was the greatest singer live.
Having said that, he's an absolute genius musician and his ability to just layer the ever living shit out of guitar tracks is unreal.
They had the best tour this summer 3 1/2 hr show of just the first 5 albums. It was amazing
Yea I saw them in oakland it was a great show
Great tour, but I wish it were in smaller venues. The whole stadium vibe didn't really work for me.
They were fantastic in Las Vegas
I saw them in Indianapolis. Of all the concert tickets I've ever bought, that's one I'm most glad I didn't pass up.
I saw them in Portland last year and they played liked 3 or 4 covers, I was disappointed. I didn't want to hear fucking Stairway to Heaven, I wanted to hear more classic Pumpkin songs.
The soundtrack to my adolescence, along with Tonight Tonight....huge slice of melancholy (and infinite sadness) whenever I hear these tunes...a yearning for simpler times...smoking weed with my friends, getting drunk thinking we knew everything when we knew nothing...what i would do to taste those days again...big up Billy and the SP XX
One of the most underrated singer/song writers/ rock bands out there ....phenomenal
Love Billy. True artist that doesn't get enough credit today that he should. He puts on one hell of a show.
Behind all the amazing thestrics and personas Billy (and the pumpkin for that matter) have created and/or endorsed over the decades, there's always been the incredible musical talent and an exquisite craftmanship of song, heavy or otherwise.
He has made ao much beautiful music since this song came out. His new solo album 'Cotillions' is out this Friday. 'Ogilala' came out in 2017. Him and an acoustic guitar and piano. You cant beat it. The best of an era
No matter what anyone says, anyone that was born from 1980-1984, this was our song when we were coming of age.
One of the best riffs
Missing the spooky guitar stab with the delay on it, that really takes it to a different realm. Ethereal. Still great without it though.
It feels great to just know I grew up and listened to awesome music in the 70's, 80's and 90''s. I'm so grateful for that. That feeling, that emotion, kids nowadays have no idea what that felt like to experience it while it happened. Those of you who also were the age to experience this understand. The rest have to read about it.
I do
Remember month after month new amazing records coming out? Almost taking it for granted that amazing artists rise while hacks may get 1 hit & fade.
I really feel like I took the great music for granted. Appearing new on the radios & going to shops to find more obscure stuff based on album covers & band names, reading the track list thinking this could be something! Sometimes a dud sometimes great. Then when cassettes were available recording off radio or copying other cassettes. Getting rare stuff off college radio then tracking down or calling them to find out what it was.
There's still discovery of great talent on CZcams but they will never get any recognition & if things don't eventually pay the bills you have to move on with life so we're gonna lose those artists
Got myself some tickets June Amsterdam 2024 soo looking forward to it ❤
This song reminds me of a rainy night (with the smell of the rain) and with a significant other who is a toxic person you wish would love you...
Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
June bug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that
We don't even care, as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it, to see
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of sound
As you can see there's no one around
Ty
Luigi Bosica yeah we know! Why waste your time
Luigi Bosica that last line always gets me
I smoked a joint with billy corgan real nice guy
Really ''Nice Weed' is 'Probably ''More'' Like it ? Ya's Might have Both Been Dead Miserable' Without the Joint,,, ha,,,just Saying. (as they say)
They 'Do' Don't they. ?
no way
And everyone clapped...
I have a friend who swears that he used to smoke PCP with Metallica.
This performance really opens up the track for me, gives a whole new meaning and takes me back to the alternative music of the 90's.
After too many years this song still one of my favourite songs ever... Thank you smashing pumpkins for what you represent in my life.
I saw Corgan waiting in line to get on a rollercoaster at Busch Gardens in Tampa early 2000's. That's all I could think about while watching this video. He couldn't care less about fame and money. He is a true artist. Timeless.
At 31 I shed a tear listening to this. So many great times
I miss this era so much, and I was too young to appreciate it. Thank you Billy
I don’t think theres a single song that can make you feel so sad that the 90s are gone yet also be so addictive that you find yourself listening through that sadness over and over
I can't believe I was 27 this song came out, I listened to it endlessly and it doesn't seem that long ago actually. And now I'm 50... Crazy.
Jan Karlsson same
Melancolie was epic 🌙
♥️💗🙌🏼♥️🙌🏼💗♥️
Mellon Collie
Here No Why is one of my faves
*still is
I still fondly remember seeing them on that tour. Good times.
Melancholy
Amazing whether it’s with a whole band or on one guitar. You can really feel a rush when you play it on guitar.
This is mine and my friends childhood ....the memories and nostalgia ....makes me smile and tear up all at once .....thank you for this wonderful piece of musical and lyrical genius ....love it 🧡✌️
Billy Corgan is a great musician! 👏👏🎸🎤
Drenched in sensation I haul my mind from the mire, with sadness wrung I just return to adore, the love in this song keeps me coming back for more.
My new favorite cut of this song
Always a great haunting lingering memory. Beautiful and melodic. Takes me back to my childhood. This is not at all as easy as you just heard it being played. Respect !
Great version. Brought a tear to my eye when I saw finally saw this live.
He sounds fantastic
I cry every time I hear this Song... Reminds me when Gustavo & I were young.
"I know you better than you can fake it". Brilliant.
This brings back so many childhood memories from the early and mid 90s.
Makes me yern for my youth and innocence before the "real" life stuff began.
Yo, you old Dogg
(Sigh) ain't it the truth. It's was all about Super Nintendo,MTV, and SNICk!
you just forgot how to live.
Hell yea man !!! This shit came out not a care in the world...here we r now I just turned 37 married 2 kids lol ...goose bumps just thinking bout it
Yea I get the feeling for sure
Thanks Billy Corgan and The Smashing Pumpkings for bringing this amazing music that makes us fly through it! One of my fav bands ever!
I love these Howard Stern live stuff, he has such a great sound in that booth. probably the best that song had sounded in years.
Absolutely brilliant! and that kids is how it's done. Through many hours enjoying and learning the guitar
Pure joy. Official video for this song is perfect. 1979. Thank you, Billy.
Never get old.
If you think the video for “1979” was perfect, then try the video for “Perfect” - which was basically a sequel to “1979”!
I will always love this song. Billy sounds fantastic live! :)
Half my life ago. Damn
Takes me back to wearing flannel and airwalk shoes in school in the 90s
Wow! He’s still got it. I could listen to an entire show with just him and an acoustic guitar.
This album is amazing
Aaahhh reminiscing my high school days where I got to do most of “my first everything” this song hits home hard. 👏🏽
Its like butter to him. Mastered his craft
That's got to be the most nostalgic song there is.at least for me!!!!
Man the fact that he can just produce that quality of music on command it’s truly amazing, I don’t care who or what you listen to .
Wow it feels like everyone is in there 40s in the comments,,, I'm 42 love the jam
I'm 50... :)

Great live performance by Billy Corgan. His guitar playing is fantastic. Billy's voice is impeccable.
This song and the video is literally the soundtrack of my life.... Damn.... ❤❤❤
