    How does “just shovel the coal” work if you notice a leak or some problem in the ship? Do you just shut up and “trust the captain”? This makes no sense. How can people swallow this?? This is a major reason why csa is so rife in this cult!

      the ship/shoveling coal illustration is hilarious, if you were a passenger on this JW ship, as you were shoveling spiritual coal you would've heard from the captain on the intercom "we will reach our destination in mile marker 1914!... wait no, 1925!" Obviously both markers were missed, then the captain proclaims mile 1914 was actually a significant mark and that within less than 100 miles they would reach their destination, very likely they would reach it at mile "1975!" 1975 comes and goes, and about 20 miles later, the ship does a full 180 degree turn, captain says "it was wrong to count from 1914 but we will surely arrive at our destination very soon!" Then 20 miles after that, the ship once again does a full 180 degree turn, and the captain says his initial calculations were wrong, "counting from mile 1914 was actually justified, now at mile 2015, we're surely less than 100 miles away from our destination!"
      Any person reading this can tell the captain is completely lost in this illustration, it'd be wise to question him. But the JWs are expected to nonetheless shovel the spiritual coal until the whole ship eventually sinks

    They use the Biblical word "united", but mean "uniform". Think about a football game. The players on the field not only dress uniformly, but they act uniformly. The players closely follow the instructions of their leaders (coaches). Players get tossed for not following instructions. The fans have differing opinions about who should be playing, what plays should be called, coaching decisions, whether or not they even attend a game. However, they are united as fans of the team. Jesus didn't call us to uniformity.

    • @helenr4300
      @helenr4300 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Not a sports person, but surely a team whilst united in one uniform don't act uniformly? They have different roles and skills, from goal keeper and defenders to the offense positions aiming to get goals/points etc
      Totally agree that unity doesn't mean uniformity and Jesus didn't ask for uniform clones.

    Some families were anti-luck and They'd say "fortune" instead. Like Good Fortune instead of Good Luck. It's not an official thing AFAIK, but some obsessed over it. I think it might be regional. My family wasn't like that but my best friend's family was. They also couldn't have pictures of unicorns or other mythological creatures. In my family we could watch Disney movies with magic like Aladdin and all the rest, but live action magic movies were not allowed. It was weird but I always knew not to make a big deal over it or my dad would ban even Disney movies. It was ridiculous

      I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Nothing was off limits as far as cartoons or movies or video games. My parents told us the magic and sci-fi was all made up so as long as you didn't believe it's true it's ok and they trusted us. We watched Star Trek and Monty Python. I remember watching Raiders of the Lost Ark with dad and when the dude's face melted he grabbed his Bible and showed me in Zechariah where that would happen in Armageddon. But if you said holy moly or good luck you're in trouble. Haircut had to be above the ears. Playing baseball and football after school with neighborhood kids was ok but you can't join the school team. Though when one of us had a birthday he's lead us all at the dinner table with a HAPPY BIRTHDATE so and so. So pretty inconsistent I guess but more lenient than most?

    • @f4rnsworth138
      @f4rnsworth138 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@cygnustsp wow that's way more lenient than most I knew. Sounds as inconsistent as my family though. We were allowed to watch Star Wars and Trek, and Indy, except for the second one. I guess magic was fine if it was something they could spin as biblical like the first and third movies, but the second one was pagan, so that was bad. I watched it in my 20s and my dad had a fit. Lol

    • @cygnustsp
      @cygnustsp Před 2 měsíci

      @@f4rnsworth138 the JWs were all in love with the third Indy movie because of him saying Jehovah, one elder even gave a talk and said "you know how the stones would cry out if they have to? Well if we don't do such a good job making Jehovah's name known at least Indiana Jones will." I think it might be a regional thing, I grew up in metro Buffalo NY so we also loved our sports. If there was a Bills game at 1:00 and their congregation was the afternoon one they'd switch and go to the morning meeting so they could watch the Bills. Dress code and grooming was strict though. Once the Watchtower reader didn't show up so I got asked to do it but then they told me I couldn't because I wasn't wearing a full suit. Another dude had a skin condition so couldn't shave and he felt compelled to go around telling everyone he wasn't falling out of the truth. I watch a lot of outsider criticisms of the JWs but none of them know what it's really like, it is so weird to look back and say yeah I was a part of that craziness and I accepted it, just like this dude's talk, get fooled and accept the arrangement.

    The governing body has decided, not Jehovah has decided. Like putting a governing body over Jehovah. Not taking out the Bible to see why. My perception, I see them having said that as Jehovah had it wrong and the governing body is right. My perception is that they are trying to take the worship for themselves. That's what Satan tried to do to Jesus is to give Satan only one act of worship.
    It is that Jehovah was never wrong and the governing body was not led by Jehovah and Jehovah had it right all the time and the governing body had it wrong.

    Hello Alt. I like your channel, and have enjoyed a half dozen episodes. This is good stuff; for me, it's a fun way to learn about the JW religion. At time code 37:03 , you said that JWs should not say the word "Luck". What's up with that? I'm not JW and a total outsider. I'm guessing that talking about Luck implies "black magic, the occult, or superstition"; and that JWs feel that category is controlled by Satan. I supposes that a good JW would not watch magician, David Copperfield, and worse, if he was performing in the sin-city of Las Vegas. Do members of JW live in Vegas? If so, what do they do for employment there? Maybe you don't know but what is your best guess?

    • @altworldly
      @altworldly  Před 2 měsíci +2

      The “luck” thing goes back to JW superstition about anything with (their words) “pagan origins.” The way I heard it growing up, saying “good luck” was calling upon the goddess of luck. We also would not say “bless you” after someone sneezes, because the origin of that tradition was pagan (like, ancient people thought sneezing was expelling bad spirits, so people would say bless you? Something like that)
      There are JWs who live in Vegas and vacation there. I don’t know for sure but it may be culturally frowned upon to work in a casino? I don’t think there’s a hard rule about that though.

You see it with the Luke/physician thing. When you question the bible or the teaching with facts that contradict either one, they say that we don’t understand Jehovah’s ways but have to do it anyway. If I can’t understand Jehovah’s ways, what makes them think they can understand when they say humans can’t understand his ways?
