Sexuality and the 6 'clobber verses' in the Bible. Many Christians are open to explore the context of the manuscripts; the period of writing; and the implication of particular translations. In the OT there was a context of fertility rituals in the wider culture that the Israelites were to avoid. In various cases that included male to male sex (rather than risk temple prostitutes getting pregnant). Also rape was used as an expression of power (still is) and that included male to male rape - as long as you were not the penetrated one you were fully masculine in our terms. This is part of the myth of Sodom and Gomorrah - which in Ezekiel is related to lack of hospitality . In the times the NT was written the Roman elite men would have sexual relations with a younger male they were 'mentoring' as well as sex with slaves of any gender. Again the concept was that if doing the penetrating then you were still being 'male'. (I have seen documentaries where middle eastern men would have sex with males or transwomen with male genitals and as long as they were taking the 'male role' did not consider that they were anything but straight). So can we compare the context that Paul knew with the understanding we have of long term committed relationships? (of course this existed in previous times but hidden, even in Greco-Roman culture). As for translations - Luther referred to pederesty, the concept of an adult male coercing a male youth. But English translations in 20th century chose to use the term homosexual. If someone believes in infallible translation ( eg the KJV only churches) then the verses cannot be interpreted in any other way; however for those who recognise the complexity of the translation process, and the role of the context the writer was within at the time, it is at the very minimum 'open to exploration'.

Growing up JW, all my family thought Pentecostals were demonized, and used the speaking in tongues as proof. I remember people in this one congregation we were in would avoid going to this one house because the people there were Pentecostals and would try to Uno Reverse Card anyone that knocked on their door and try to preach to the JWs and give them THEIR bible tracts.

as a Methodist we had the same impact to avoid us. But not before the 2 JWs in my year at high school had to face ministry to class mates. Actually our in school conversations were much more involved. Last month visiting parents I bumped into younger brother of one of the JWs I was in school class with. I asked if the family was still JW and he denied any ever connections.

As a church leader I regularly preach that doubt is essential to faith. The opposite to faith is certainty, not doubt. Faith is trusting without clear evidence, if I know for certain then it is not faith anymore (Heb 11). I want people to leave services I lead provoked to think for themselves. I love when people debate with my pov - we need to examine and understand why we believe something in order to explain it to others. I remember as a student in our christian group using Bible study guides that included starter questions for conversations about the text. Many on them had the first 1-2 questions as what we nicknamed the 'sunday school' questions which were like childhood comprehension classes - eg if the passage said Jesus was questioned by the scribes and pharisees the question may be ' who is asking the question about who is my neighbour'? I imagine the KH meetings as an extended version of that, never moving on to the more personal/reflective questions. And I agree that it is about not allowing any views other than that of the WT text being allowed.

Brilliant crossover ! Really enjoyed the whole conversation. Re hymns - as a Methodist (UK), I have not gone through the hymnbook but would suggest that there is many not addressed to God personally. There are different genre and over the ages what dominated changed, and our books have the selection of those that lasted/aged best from each (plus denominational favourites). The 'worship music' style of a solid block of singing and intended as a time directly addressed to God is actually a mid to late 20th century thing. The hymn sandwich is much older, but singing at all in churches is optional as we look at the full range of church traditions. (Some would not sing; some only plainchant the psalms etc) There are hymns that intend to reinforce/teach theology * 'And can it be' (in UK THE Methodist Hymn - but as I found on exchange in NC, not the case in US) Hymns that are proclamations of who God is (like Helio's example letter to a hypothetical wife) eg 'Praise to the Lord'; 'At the name of Jesus'; 'I know that my redeemer lives' Hymns that speak to the congregation (singers) calling them to some response 'Just as I am, without a plea' Declarations of the congregation - 'Take my life and let it be' ; 'Now thank we all our God' And then those addressed to God. Late 20th century has a lot of worship directed to God; but also saw the rise of church music to stir people to act towards the weakest and vulnerable (look up Iona / Wild Goose but beyond them - I know this is a UK centric example, actually would be interesting to know if this has crossed the pond in any way) Late 1800s into early 1900s was the Moody and Sankey era (again not just them) and a lot of that material is proclamation, and very blood focused eg 'There is power, power, wonderworking power, in the Blood of the Lamb' - actually early pentecostals at least in UK used the Redemption Hymnal that had a lot of that material. *Methodism came from the preaching of John Wesley (who lived and died an Anglican; the final split from the Church of England was when he sent preachers to America - and dared to ordain them when he was not a bishop so no authority to do so. One of the reasons that US Methodism can be more Episcopalian than in UK is that the branching off was so early, later UK Methodism became more non conformist in style of worship). But John had a brother Charles who wrote thousands (I think) of hymns, only some of which lasted. But the purpose of those hymns was to teach theology - on the basis of semi literate communities, and that people recall words set to music, so a Charles Wesley hymn will have really complex references to a wide range of biblical points, some feeling obscure today, and although now sung to respectable hymn tunes were originally written to fit the meter of the pub songs of the day - so people already knew the tunes...

“Happy are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, since the Kingdom of the heavens belongs to them. “Happy are you when people reproach you and persecute you and lyingly say every sort of wicked thing against you for my sake. Rejoice and be overjoyed, since your reward is great in the heavens, for in that way they persecuted the prophets prior to you. - Matthew 5:10-12 We cannot prevent those things that Jesus talked about from happening because they must happen (Matthew 24:9; Luke 21:12,13). Therefore, we are not surprised to see God's people being accused today with false claims, half truths and torture. Jesus was treated like that. Religious leaders and hateful people accused him with false claims and half truths and he was tortured and later killed as a criminal. The Christians who were present at the time of Jesus in the first century were treated in the same way. Their opponents even called them cult (Act 14:2,19, Act 24:1,2,5-14) These things are not new, they happened in the past and are happening today. The purpose of the false claims and half-truths that our opponents make is to sow doubt in Jehovah's people. That is one of the method Satan uses to draw people away from Jehovah and make them stop preaching work. Opponents promise to give people freedom when they themselves are not free. They are misled and they mislead others. Their portion will be according to their deeds. (2Peter 2:19,20, Romans 2:6-9)

Jehovahs witnesses are indoctrinated to "enjoy" it. They're told they enjoy it, so they "do" "We" is a word used in many of the governing body talks and basic elder talks too. There is very little individuality. They are one, in a way. It's a high control cult. I'm married to a jw who writes and is very artistic. I see his struggle a lot. They don't care about his creativity. They actually see it as a barrier to his spirituality. I hate it but I remain patient

45:44 yeah I think if anything, THATS what's really killing off any interest in newer generations of people becoming JWs is how creatively limited it is to express your faith in the religion. But the organization doesn't realize how fucking weird and controlling it makes them seem. It's why you don't have anything like the Christian Rock genre in JW groups cause if anyone started one, not matter how much their faith inspired them to write rock songs about Jehova... at best you'll be casually discouraged by their congregation or at worst threatened with disfellowshipping

Nausea based morality. It would have been fine if they just left it at that, but they made it a moral crime and tried to say GOD said it - just goes to show you the writer's bigotry and arrogance. Also Scientology: look at how awful they are to critics and they are TINY! Could you imagine how awful they'd be if they had actual numbers backing them up?

'I'm pretty sure that biblical homophobia is only there because it made the writers nauseous to witness it' In what way? Because a straight person could not imagine same sex attraction? Well hello a same sex attracted person could feel nauseous to imagine what a straight couple might get up to. Or because the greco -roman culture had issues where older males 'mentored' male youths and would sexually take the male role to the youth's 'female' role. Or because fertility rites had temple prostitutes and when they were male (transwomen; trans dressed) then no risk of pregnancy. But as long as a male penetrated that was not considered any diversion in sexuality.... and this is still the case in various places around the world.

The JWs do visit and speak to normal people though when they knock/knocked on doors. They don’t appreciate it if you push back or question them and will just say you’re a liar and twisting the truth no matter what you show them I don’t think you’d get anywhere for nothing with Scientology. I remember back in the 80s when I was working away from home they stopped me and said they were speaking about psychology and self help. They handed me a book and said read this it will tell you what we’re talking about. I took the gift of the book and said I had to leave as my digs served dinner soon. Next thing they’re asking for money for the book. As a 16 year old I was too stunned to argue. Needless to say decades later they still sent letters trying to sell courses to my parents house as that was the address I gave.

Door-knocking is different from what they're suggesting. The JW approach is basically doing a sales pitch to someone who wasn't expecting one and probably has something else going on. It's practically designed to illicit negative responses, which makes the JW think "wow, these people sure are angry and against hearing the word. Good thing I have my church full of happy people." These people are saying "maybe if JWs had normal interactions with people as equals they would see them as normal people."
