The Jamaican Public Service (JPS) has been the sole electricity provider in Jamaica for decades. However, many residents feel that this monopoly results in high prices and limited options. Introducing competition could improve service quality and reduce costs, benefiting everyone. The more we discuss this issue, and talk about how JPS SCAMS them, the more likely we are to see change. It's unsustainable for one company to control the entire electricity sector. Jamaica needs competition to drive improvements and provide more affordable services. The government has historically granted JPS exclusive rights, aiming for consistent and reliable service, but this approach isn't working. It leads me to think that JPS might be influencing Members of Parliament to maintain the status quo. It's time for change, and we need laws that allow for competition in the electricity sector. Love your videos - it's an eye-opener for me as I consider moving back to Jamaica myself.

What I notice is that JPS will send you a bill one you are not accustomed to paying and they will watch to see for three consecutive months to see if you pay before or within due date once you do that, you are Doomed, they will stick you with that figure that will increase. I live in a 3 person household. We have a refrigerator; fans; 2 tvs( one that is usually unplugged. We do not own ACs; deep freezer; hot water heater etc, but best believe every single month my bill is $20k-25 k and change. We as citizens need to get serious with these utilitly companies because they are playing a very unfair game.

The good news is that we can swap providers.

Jps announced there would be a rise in the bill to offset the cost of reconstruction as a result of the storm. People protested bad and they soon announced they would not add a surcharge or whatever they were calling it. Those dome houses from St Thomas are looking better and better. They are cooler inside, built in water catchment, and fitted for solar. Dome shape is also stronger.

The service we get is crazy and there is no compensation for outages. Business could never survive that why sadly people can not take business in Jamaica seriously. The government needs to step in and put compensation for outages if more than 3 hours. This will stop this from happening and they will have to answer to someone.

You haven’t mentioned meter readings. Each bill should show how the charge was calculated, including two meter readings: one at the start and another at the end of the charge period. Each reading should clearly indicate if it’s an estimate or an actual reading. By studying the readings over the ten-month period and the current reading, you should be able to determine if the meter was changed, and if so, when. If it was, that would add a bureaucratic complication that probably only the OUR could sort out.

JPS make it impossible for you to complain. Its the same in the UK. Some of the phone and utility companies in the UK, has no shop or office. when you have a problem, they don't care they just hang up the phone because there's no face to face contact. They are always going to win, they will just ignore your complaint letters.

Ah! Thank you. I think some people believe you can just complain and it’ll get sorted, and although this should be the case, the reality is it just doesn’t work that way. I’ve already been back to the JPS office twice since making this video and it’s evident we’re not going to get anywhere

It’s not only happening in Jamaica, it’s the same here in England. Let them know that you will put in your own meter. It’s bigger than JPS.
Who owns JPS. They use the meter number and bill the customer. The tillers don’t even know what is going on.

Don't Jps have remote meter readings?
That's the new technology. I believe some people has that.
Maybe use solar for fridge and stove and get some solar lamps for the house. Put them out side during the day and take them in at night. I have friends who does that. There are so many solar products on the market now.
    JPS is Jamaica's first scammer.

If the bill has been erroneous for 10 months, and they did not convey that to you, it is only fair that they give you the same 10 months to clear up the $77,000.

Please check your bills for the last ten months to see if stated actual or estimated reading. Then you will know if they are telling the truth . According to the OUR, you should not get no more than three consecutive estimated bills , or jps owe you money.

It is not that bad in Canada. They can not just put on an extra 55k, on people's bills and there are no recourse. In Canada, there are institutions that you can complain to and get good results. Better business bureau, etc.

Firstly, Outlaw the government only has 20% share in JPS so go easy secondly check all those bill for the same meter number only the last one should have a different if it's change, and thirdly if I were in your situation I would be smiling, don't follow the noise in the market, just simple check your bills for the last ten months reading stating ( estimated/ actual) seeing estimate for three consecutive months give your case to the OUR.,, argument done.
