Don't forget, the Wish spell allows you to turn the BBEG into pasta if you specifically say "I wish [BBEG's full name] would permanently turn into [pasta of choice] 5 seconds from the time I finish this sentence."

Oooh i had a guy try something similar once. The bad guys name was "Alexandrite Oxnord Deluvia Saphri Auroras", known congenially as king or queen "Adessa". They were part demon so finding out their true name was important to the plot. They tried to turn him into, specifically, a chicken (they were going to make chicken wings of evil).
That particular player didnt know it was also a lineage name for demon-touched elves, where **every** demonic elf who takes the throne has this name as their true name during their century rule and until they die thousands of years later. The player turned hundreds of very old, very powerful, not evil demon-touched elves into chickens and started a major war between the races i was using at the time and the demon-touched elves. Completely derailed the campaign with a much more interesting plot as it became a maneuver through active war to A) Find another wish spell to undo the last wish and B) Find the correct magic chicken.

I really think Wish at its full power is supposed to be a macguffin. The "9th level" spell should only be able to cast an 8th or lower level spell with no components necessary and make the effect permanent until another Wish is made.

    • @Arkios64
      @Arkios64 Před měsícem

But ALSO remember that, one component of the Wish spell is that the DM can decide that ANY Wish just doesn't work. No reason required.
If your players are trying to break your story, you have every power to not let it happen. It's part of the spell description itself, so there's no arguing about it.
But talking it out is still recommended, of course.
Maybe compromise by making the stupid thing happen in an AU oneshot in a session in the future, just for fun; or just briefly describe how stupid and anticlimatic the Wish ends the campaign, and as soon as anyone asks if 'something that ridiculous really happened' in any way answer them 'of course not, the Wish didn't work'.

Yeah... current campaign. All the way back to the beginning, before the name Arson Hobos was famous across the lands.
Session three, we have a Dragonborn cleric in the group. We play over discord, so everyone submits their sheets. Except the dragonborn still hasn't submitted his sheet, I've prompted him again, and he says yeah soon come.
Anyway, so session three, the AH are fighting bandits disguised as vampires, and they have a cleric that has raised a few zombies as good measure. Now the vampires just got their butt kicking, and the remaining zombies are so far away that it will take 2 rounds of full sprinting to reach them and the cleric.
The dragonborn calls an attack on the zombies. I tell him too far away. He rolls, I ignore it and say too far away.
Then he goes to his sheet and claims "I can jump 18 feet and breathe fire for 20, I roll to hit."
The barbarian says, "Dude, too far away."
I again state the zombies are over 50 feet away and call for actions, informing the dragonborn he is now caught in a web spell he refused to roll for because no one else did. Except he's now 38 feet away from everyone on his own. He attacks with his pole arm. At this point, everyone is telling him he's too far away.
He starts complaining I was ignoring his turn, going on about his ability to jump 18 feet, and yeah, if not for the web spell, he would have maybe been there in his second round. But he refused to roll to save, so he is automatically caught.
Except now, the party is questioning why he can jump that far, and now everyone wants his sheet posted.
His response was to rage quit and defame us because I ignored his attacks and turn.
Not exactly in line with the video, but close enough, perhaps.

The extremely low roll one at the end reminded me of my session last week. I'm the dm for the game and the playets went somewhere I told them they weren't prepared for(bbeg's lair). I show them 12 guards in plate mail with fighter levels(lvl5)amd ask them if they're sure they want to do this, that it will likely be a tpk. They want the smoke, so I give it to them. There were 4 of them, all lvl8, and I proceeded to miss every attack roll I made against them except for 3. They beat the encounter, using almost all their feautres and spell slots, and walked away with only their hp left. One of them managed to do over 100 damage in a single round. I was dying laughing the entire time, their ac wasn't even that high and I just kept missing. An average of 20 attack rolls a round from me and them all missing.

For context, our DM plays with a "changing orientation" like you could go from Lawful Good to Neutral Good for breaking a few laws, for example.
Anyway. We were sent on a mission by a head priestess to go and find a rogue priestess who was decimating a small town by taking "sacrifices" for their vampire god. Normally, the sacrifices are consensual, they're people who want to be sacrificed for their god. But this priestess had left the city and went to a far out town and started taking random townspeople to kill. We go in and find the sacrifice chamber, with 14 sacrifices, two dead the rest alive, but barely. While I, the cleric, offer to heal some of the injuries and hang back with them while the rest explore the temple a bit, our Articifer suggests "putting them out of their misery.". Most of them would be fine after a cure wounds and some food. So, immediately after that suggestion, the DM says their alignment will change, and asks the party for suggestions. All of us (5) say Chaotic Evil at the same time. The DM agrees, saying thats what he was thinking. Our Artificer FREAKS THE FUCK OUT, going from Neutral Good to Chaotic Evil in one moment. But we all said it was fair, as that aas pretty fucking evil to want to kill 12 people. We argued for about 45 minutes until he gave up, said "whatever" and barely participated in the boss battle against the priestess, saying he already figured out the puzzle to her weakness after we spent ages trying to get it.

Once had a "THAT GUY" get pissed off that I the DM had the audacity to have the town guards arrest him on a failed pick pocket.... here's what happened. He the bard, wanted to pick pocket (and I quote) "the richest guy in town." This was in the dead center of town. He rolls a nat 1. His modifiers put him at a negative 2 or worse. Before I could say anything he wants to do a dex check/save to save. Fine. Again after mods he's got a negative number. I tell him in his attempt to pick pocket the mayor/Mr. Rich, THAT GUY ended up tripping and de-pants-ing the mayor. I then had to explain why the town mayor would be the richest guy in town and why literally getting caught with your hand in the dude's pants trying to take the wallet is not legally acceptable. I had even tried to get the guy to go to the tavern like everyone else in the party. But, no! He wants a life of crime...with no stupid consequences!

Not me, but a friend of mine met a "That Guy" in their server and showed me screenshots. Basically, every time someone had actual sourced quotes from Gary Gygax himself to debunked one of his arguments, That Guy would make more unsourced claims about how TSR and WoTC both lied, that Gary Gygax only ever supported his stance on what D&D is and that, in his exact words "if you wanted story in your game, then it's not D&D, it's a pen and paper videogame with a railroading DM". That Guy eventually crossed a line and started using actual, real world slurs in his rants at the DM and other players, so he got kicked for the bigotry, his character became a case of "separate the art from the artist until we can kill him off", and last I heard they had his character piss off the Lady of Pain. And you know it's game over for That Guy's character at that point, because death by her hands is a death that even the almighty Wish spell can't undo.

Got a spicy one and a long read. My "that guy" experience was a DM for a Star Wars 5e game I joined. Safe to say the red flags made themselves known from the moment I attempted to apply for the game.
The first thing that had me concerned was the fact that the application process for the game included, to my dismay, a consent form with SAFETY TOOLS. There are plenty of videos on CZcams about how bad they are to use in campaigns, and safe to say that should have been when I left. I had hoped it wasn't as bad as I thought, as there can be exceptions to the rule. Boy, was I wrong. It was gonna get worse.
After a bit, he got back to me and started asking me questions (which probably should have been apart of that consent form as a whole application, but that's just me being nitpicky.) Either way, what kinda confused me and made things a bit strange is the oddly specific questions about certain favorites, which caught me off-guard.
Now, I'm not a big Star Wars fan, and my knowledge on the setting is limited at best. But to ask me my favorite Droid model? When I don't even know my droids that well? Why does this matter now? I literally had to get a random type of Droid model off Wookiepedia to move things along. He even harped on it for a bit, and I responded that my memory of the franchise is limited, which wasn't untrue.
I also find it funny how, during this process, he asked about my biggest pet peeves with DMs, as I replied: "I'd say one pet peeve I have is when a DM acts confrontational to its players in response to even the smallest things and arguing with their players. Basically, I don't like when a DM creates or enables a hostile environment within the group itself. We're all meant to have a good time, and if the referee is being problematic, I don't wanna be in that group."
Remember this, cause it'll come up later.
And that's only for the vetting process to get in, which I did in the end. But the problems didn't stop there. They only got worse going into the session 0.
Now, my recollection of what happened fully is blurry, but I do recall another red flag that kept being brought up.
I was going to play a Half-Human Fighter who was a Foundling Mandalorian. The campaign took place in 4 BBY, when the Galactic Empire had a tight grip over the galaxy. I went the route of playing an amnesiac with a lost past that might lead to a shift in perspective. The intention was that he was formerly a Jedi who survived Order 66 with a massive head wound and would be brought back to health and trained under the Mandalorian Protectors.
After being sent off Mandalore as it was taken over and strip mined of its resources, he was meant to fend for himself in the greater galaxy and find out who he is, mainly to get retribution for what the Empire has done. Years would pass and he would find out he had some sort of connection to the Force, and wished to seek out more answers. without drawing a huge target on his back by the Empire. All seems fine, right?
Wrong. The DM constantly harped on certain details about my character that he thought shouldn't happen, even if them happening is intentional. There was one thing he repeated ad infinitum: "You're either a Mando, or you're not." He even made it clear that I "couldn't" just let other enemy clans live, even if I wanted to. This irked me constantly, as all I wanted to do was play a character who had a constant inner conflict. And he took that personally somehow.
This even bled into the first two (and only) sessions I ever got. A lot of thing went over my head as at times, I had gotten so frustrated I was brought to silence. Throughout my time in that game, he was constantly being disrespectful in all sorts of ways, and it just didn't stop.
Another red flag that came up was when I realized this guy didn't even know how certain rules in the system worked. He didn't even know how Lair Actions worked, despite him reading what was said and still having it take place after my turn, which was LITERALLY before it happened. Not a big deal, but something that baffled me. When I looked up a certain rule and tried to explain it to him (like I said I would when he asked about disagreements on running the game), this was his response:
    "Yeah, well, I don't care."
This did not sit well with me, and left a sour taste in my mouth even into the second (and my last) session.
But what made this worse, was that the DM was apparently autistic (I am as well, for context), which explained a lot of his tendencies. This isn't ableism or anything, just showing that even I don't like that some people like me could be such assholes and don't get help for it. He would get set off for things that really weren't a big deal (at least to me), among other things I can't recall anymore, and both sessions were total trainwrecks.
Even one of the other players didn't like how he was being treated, and he was NEW to D&D 5e as a whole. So at least I know I wasn't alone. I just felt bad for the guy.
Oh yeah, and the second session didn't start for a WHOLE HOUR after the start time. All to perpetuate these issues and argue over insignificant stuff, but my patience was running thin for sure.
It didn't matter in the end, because the guy would even contradict his own rule about only keeping loose to the lore. He literally said to my face that the group isn't meant to be a "have a fun goofy time" kind of group. He told me that it was a bad defense to say these games aren't that serious. To him, the group is here to "adhere to the canon for the sake of fun".
Again, I baffle myself wondering why I didn't leave at the session 0. I tend to be desperate to join a game and not wanna leave cause I feel like I might never get another chance to play the system. But I'm glad I didn't try to make it work for any longer than the second session.
It was either on the day of the third session or the day before, but I sent a lengthy message to EVERYONE in the server about the issues I had and peaced out immediately afterward without letting anyone else say a word.
Probably the worst experience I've had throughout it all. Definitely didn't have much of a meltdown, but more like a slow toxic burn. Always remember folks: No D&D is better than bad D&D.
