Masque of Might is the world premiere of a witty and satirical new opera which sees Sir David Pountney skilfully assemble Henry Purcell’s music to create a fantastical and thoroughly modern tale. In this extract ('In guilty night' from Purcell's 'Saul and the Witch of Endor'), Seer, Sceptic and Elena reveal to Diktat a vision in the form of a play, in which King Saul (tenor Xavier Hetherington) visits the fortune-telling Witch of Endor (soprano Anna Dennis) and learns that he will lose his kingdom.

Saw it live. A whole evening of Purcell! Superb music. And re-imagined to tell a very modern cautionary tale. Opera North stretch your imagination in such ingenious ways. Please re-release their brilliant Orpheus mixing Monteverdi and contemporary Indian classical music. Possibly the best night in the theatre ever!
