John's Canyon Trail - Utah | Trail Recovery

In this video we are exploring John's Canyon Road in Utah. It's an awesome trail in the four corners area that I highly recommend! During our travels here we have encountered a stuck Subaru that we recovered and escorted back to tarmac. That old road beyond John's C streambed crossing at one time went all the way to Slickhorn Canyon. However since road maintenance ceased many decades ago, the road has deteriorated. Where the Subaru got stuck it is not wise to attempt in anything but a high-clearance 4WD or OHV and an experienced driver. There's a small turnaround place just before where the car got stuck and drivers are advised to stop there and scout on foot before trying to drive any farther. I saw a CZcams video of guys on ATVs who got stopped some miles farther anyway due to a landslide. Possibly someone on a dirtbike or mountain bike could go further. Where the car got stuck it's a good area to get out and look for rock art on boulders. When you cross the streambed where maintenance now ends, there's a road 'Y' and if you go right that road used to continue several miles to a small campsite but BLM keeps trying to close it. There's another old driller road cutting off before you get to the streambed crossing but it doesn't go anywhere in particular nowadays. Some Outdoor Education groups use that old Slickhorn road as a trail and connect Valley of Gods area with lower Grand Gulch or Slickhorn Canyon. Years ago I was able to drive a '89 Toy 4WD pickup past where the car got stuck, but even then the road got super bad some miles farther, and I never got very close to Slickhorn C. I'm sure some local old-timers can remember driving much farther "way back when."
I've lived in this county since 1997 and that's one of my favorite places to go for the day.
