    I “raced” a guy the other day by the Huntington Beach bike trails.....he had a nice road bike don’t remember the make but a nice one...and me on a a single speed Fuji declaration with aero bars and I’ve been practicing and finding my best comfortable aero position and Making tweaks here and there to the aero bars ride height to the saddle ....anyway I beat him and got compliments that I maintained my aero position for that long and the fact I was on a single speed. 😁that made me feel good.....aero bars help a ton! And also a decent aero-ish helmet. Building up your tolerance and practicing your aero position is far more important than buying the most expensive bike that you don’t know how to ride yet. That’s all I’ve done to the bike so far cheap aero bars off of Amazon and a kmc 710sl gold chain. Maybe one day I’ll get a purpose built tt bike or triathlon bike. For now I’m happy I can ride and compete against myself.

    I just bought a 2000 Trek Hilo triathlon/time trial bike for $100. It has a double butted seamless superlight aluminum 56 cm frame, Spinergy Rev-X 650b aerodynamic carbon fiber wheels with Vittoria Competition tubular tires ( that I'll replace with new Vittoria tubulars), Syntace clip on aero bar, Profile Design bullhorn handlebar, Gieppeme saddle, LOOK Delta cleats compatible clipless pedals, Shimano 105 Hollowtech components, Cinelli handlebar tape, Mavic CPX21 clincher wheels with Shimano HG hubs and Continental Grand Prix 3000 tires, a Cateye cycle computer mounted on the clip on bar, either Shimano 105 or Ultegra barend shifters and a double water bottle cages rack mounted behind the saddle to the seat post.
    I bought it from a friend who owns a bike shop here in Texas. I wish I could post my picture of it here.

      That's an awesome setup for an AMAZING price. Single fastest guy on my college team was on a late 90s Panasonic. All about the legs

    I'm looking at maybe entering the 2019 Windcrest Sprint Triathlon in San Antonio, Texas in June 2019. It would be my first triathlon and I raced in two duathlons and a few time trials when I lived in Colorado.

      Absolutely, happy to help! There's a lot of videos out there that imply you need to spend thousands to even start the sport, and that's such a bummer. Hope you enjoy the sport, it's a blast. :)

    Hey Justin! I just purchased a 2017 Felt IA 14 this past week! My first tri bike was a 2009 Felt B12 and I completed 4 Ironman races with it. Looking forward to IM #5 in Wisconsin this coming September!

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon  Před 6 lety

      Oh man, such a good pick. Those B12s are great bikes too, I nearly grabbed a new one myself. Congrats on the IA! I mean sure, once you're at that level of bike they're all good, but *man* the IA is a fantastic bike. Super stable too. FYI if you weren't aware: Check your aerobar clamps and make sure they say V3. Some reports on Slowtwitch of cracks that'll occur on the V2s. Felt will replace them. 👍
      Good luck at Wisc! I almost picked that myself but the date didn't work. Looks fun!

      @volusiascooter Před 6 lety

      It looks like I have the V2 aerobar clamp. I didn't see a recall notice on Felt's site. Can you give me a link where I can find more information about this? Thanks!

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon  Před 6 lety

      Yeah! Nice catch. There's a guy on ST whose failed during a ride causing a crash. I didn't ride mine until I got it fixed, just to be safe. It doesn't seem like there's an official recall per se, and some of the dealers aren't even aware of it. But basically you have to go through the dealer. If the dealer calls Felt and asks for the IA V3 brackets, they know. There should be a thiny little shim spacer 'filling the gap' in the bracket. Make sure that's in place. My dealer is pretty tri specific and already knew about it when I called. Here's a link to the ST thread: forum.slowtwitch.com/forum/Slowtwitch_Forums_C1/Triathlon_Forum_F1/Felt_IA_aero_bar_fail_P5969878/

      I did my sprint triathlon on a Surly long haul trucker touring bike with a leather.brooks saddle. Put on narrow tires. Lots of gears and comfortable ride plan on riding ironnan 70 3. Lots of low end gears for hills. Riding 60 miles on the most comfortable bike built seems to make sense. I am 70 and goal is to finish. Crazy?

    Thanks Justin, this helped layout the choices and honestly saved me $1000. I'll be going with a road bike with clip on aero bars for my first sprint triathlon. See you at the SEAL sprint tri in March?

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon  Před 5 lety

      Glad it helped man! Yeah, seems like there's a ton of sort of... Mixed info out there. Finally decided to make a video where I could let my bike nerd out. Is SEAL the one in CA? Probably not. I've just signed up for my first ultra (50m) the week before, and I live in North Carolina. That said... Probably gonna be moving back out west (Boise likely) within a year or two, so very possible at some point!

    Justin … the Cervelo P2 IS a triathlon bike, as is the Felt B12.

    Just bought a 1996 cannondale r400 for 200 bucks is the guy said it was a tri bike but it doest look like one even for the era is is still a good bike for racing with its 2x7 drive terrain?? Thabks for the help

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon  Před 5 lety +2

      It's more of a road bike than a tri bike, but there's nothing wrong with that. The drawback of 2x7 will be that you'll have fewer gears to select from, which means you might want to pedal a *little* bit faster, but won't have a gear there, and you'll end up peddling a lot faster, or whatever. That said, it's perfectly capable. It won't handle as well or feel as snappy as newer bikes, but for $200, perfectly fine

    im a little confused because on the Cervelo website it says the P series is for triathlons, and you mention the P2 is a good road bike. Is the p2 road or tri? thanks.

    • @bcardamone
      @bcardamone Před rokem

      It’s a triathlon bike … not a road bike.
