- Last year we did a Triathlon on a budget, and we did the whole thing for a little over £300, but was that actually the cheapest tri possible? Probably not. So this year, we upped the ante, and lowered the budget, for GTN’s cheapest triathlon attempt no.2... eBay + £100? Could we do it?

Triathlon with just the gear you can find in your neighbors garage/shed.
Per your own suggestion. Upgrade the bikes and see how far you get with them!
Similar to how Super league has divided into teams.. and how the mixed team relay has become popular..
I’d like to see a competition between the three of you to coach the fastest coed relay triathlon. Must recruit your athletes off the street(must be strangers) they can not have prior race experience in that discipline.. 30-60 days to train.. all equipment must be borrowed from their friends/family (except helmet).
Would be a fun way to introduce people to our sport! Would show that anyone could do this with minimal investment and become hooked!
Imagine being another racer: "I thought I was doing well, then someone in budgie smugglers flew past me on an upright bike ringing his bell and grinning like a fool. I think I might try cross stitch instead."

Such great content! Maybe do a historical Tri where all your kit has to come from the first 5 years of triathlon. Or make a race and try the most illegal bike styles like recumbents or fairings to see what advantage they really offer.

With triathlon getting un inclusively expensive and I now just do home made long distances triathlons as they’re a price of a bike to enter official ones ! And my wetsuit is a surfing wetsuit as they’re more hardwearing, it’s so refreshing to see you guys do a more affordable and inclusive approach to swim bike run like it use to be
That's interesting Alan. Only ever did Sprints back in the era of Spencer Smith, great fella and it was expensive enough then so it's awful to read that it's even more expensive now. In my time it was considered by many to be a middle-class sport, so I guess even more so now.
Explain the surfing suit?
@@nikilragavwetsuits for swimming are especially designed to make people swim faster. They can be prohibitively expensive.
Wetsuits for surfing are designed to keep you warm. They can be really cheap even new, e.g. Decathlon has a house brand that offers good value. Or you buy them dirt cheap used.
Absolute gold! I'm planning my first triathlon next year having only just got back into running after 10 years of no exercise. Watch out for the vintage triathletes sporting vintage gear! Thanks for being such great sports and opening the sport up to newbies!!
I really love this channel, I’m training for my first Triathlon and some of your tips have being priceless, not to mention the entertainment and the British understanding lessons.
Cracking video, me and the wife were in stitches. We'd love to see you take on an extreme triathlon like The Double Brutal. We also love the lighter hearted stuff like this, maybe a video where you have to get, triathlon gear from the 90's or early 00's with a budget of under £400 for everything 🤷♂️. So great and the fun was so inspiring. This is what triathlon is all about! I would be curious which race it was, and approximate registration, nutrition, and transport costs, which end up being the last hurdle a lot of people can’t clear. If then it all totals to less than 200 i think that’s still really impressive and accessible.

I remember racing in kit like Mark's back in the late 1990s although my bike was also steel it was at least a racing bike with a whole 10 gears I think. Still racing on a budget yet able to be competitive in my age group having been to the European age group champs on a 3rd hand Boardman bike bought for £500 (with a few upgrades).

The watches they were wearing were more than their entire kit. Lol
Well….. Being a student I bought most of my non-critical gear on eBay. Helmet and bike were new, running shoes I had as well as my training swimsuits. The rest were all in “worn once” condition or were things like paddles that don’t need to be perfect 😁

Brilliant and hilarious stuff - you guys are great sports! When I started triathlon in the eighties / early nineties, most of the average age groupers were using very average commuter bikes, kind of miss those days when the playing fields were a tad more level and bikes cost less than cars 🤣

I talked my neighbor into trying his first tri using his existing gear which wasn't much better. We've got another neighbor who is a PTO ranked pro who offered to loan a full aero helmet for the day in the spirit of James' kit but alas we couldn't convince our newbie to wear it on race day 😂😂😂

this was so cool. I usually can only afford ultramarathons because triathlons are expensive to join. Very killer kits. Don't feel bad about your bike. I ride a Rocky Mountain hardtail. We ride what we got.

looks like my first triathlon, upgrade the bike tires, cut the handle bar narrower for aero and youre set
I had the complete range of blue/yellow speedo triathlon kit in 1998
so not sure how I feel watching this one as my bike looks exactly like the bikes you were riding (hybrid, with flat bars and mines a step-thru version), but my tires are fatter.... and it was new.... and a paid a fortune for it as I bought it during covid....and i don't even have a bell...And i have the goggles with the ear plugs too....not sure how to take this..
Would love to see some episodes on how to compete on a budget. Especially triathletes spend fortunes on their gear. Is suspect most brings only marginal gains. But how much is a reasonable budget for competing?
You guy should make it a competition! You each get 1-3 points for each of your items based on how cheap it was, and then 1-3 points based on how you each place in the race. I think it would be really interesting to see
