    I find competing with other civ's apostoles to be such a bother, that I usually prefer to not get a religion, so I don't have to deal with it. When not going for a religion, faith is still useful for buying great people and maybe military units.

  • @MunchKING

    I personally like Scripture/Papal Primacy combo. Scripture increases how strong your spread without needing to use missionaries/Apostles is, and Papal Primacy gives city states a huge amount of influence towards your religion when you send Envoys.
    In a game with a lot of city states, you can get a surprising amount of religious conversions of enemy cities just from the casual pressure emanating from all the city states.
    Add Jerusalem to make all Holy Site considered Holy Cities.

  • @zyrain
    @zyrain Před 6 lety +20

    It seems pressure is useful as a tiebreaker. Since some beliefs are based on if the city is converted or not, having the slightest edge may make a difference.

    There are four things that make you videos stand out and a pleasant experience to watch. 1. No fake Hollywoodstyle intro, 2. No talking head in the picture, 3. No annoying and often way too loud music, and 4. The sentence “without further ado” after only 14 seconds into the video, and not what is often seen at two-thirds into a video. Very well done and thank you for that.

    I have found one religous belief pretty interesting, especially for religious domination games... I don't remember the name nor the cathegory, I think it was a follower belief, but that belief makes any new cities founded by a civilization having a majority of that religion being started with the religion established instantly. This makes it cheaper to propagate the religion and freely increase religious pressure. Furthermore, AIs have a tendency to favor cities without a religion as their prefered target, making any new cities you build less likely to recieve a visit from an apostle. It doesn't prevent them entirely mind you, but it does reduce the number of conversion attempts on your empire.

    Earth Goddess is also very good for Culture games, where you will try to improve tile appeals, since faith can be used to buy various units or even city buildings, etc. depending on your civ and city-states. And of course, the faith is needed for building the guy who builds national parks, as well. This also makes synagogue a good choice, for the extra faith to build the naturalists.

    Very nice guide! Theological combat is a huge factor indeed.
    In my current Arabia game pressure is quite strong. I have the only religion on a continent with Aztec and Scotland with about 15 cities. Total distributed pressure is about as much, as spending one missionary charge every turn.
    With Moshka already giving +100% pressure (probably to your holy city), I think Scripture will be weaker than Itinerant Preachers (+30% pressure range = 3 tiles farther) in many scenarios.

    I would highly recommend Dance of the Aurora if you are near tundra, then build your holy site in the middle of it, you can usually get +6 or more with clever placement. Desert Folklore the same if you are near desert - Choosing Peter holds more bonuses with Tundra and will usually be placed near it. Finally, Ubunsor Hollow will provide even more faith so I’ve managed to get +22 faith as Peter before...then with Hildegard of Bingen you can then claim the same amount of science along with it!!!

    I jut played my first full game of Civ 6. I was doing great, I thought, had tons of science, gold, production, etc. Then all of a sudden a bunch of dudes with crosses came into my territory, I couldn't attack them, I couldn't stop them at all. They converted all my cities to their religion, and then the game quickly ended and I lost due to religion. I've now spent at least an hour on youtube trying to find out how to avoid that kind of gameplay in my next games. But I'm having no luck. Is there a way to disable religious victory? Or how do I stop those religious units in my territory? I didn't even see a way to build those units myself. Any push in the right direction would be helpful.

    • @TheRewasder97
      @TheRewasder97 Před 5 lety +2

      you can disable religious victory in the advanced settings when creating a game, as for how to stop those units you can have your own religion to create them and fight in theological combat or you can declare war on their nation to kill them with normal military units.

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  Před 6 lety +10

      The best way is to get an apostle with the debater promotion and run policy cards to improve your Theological Combat Strength and use him to fight the inquisitors. Take it slowly and make sure you either have gurus to heal or send him back to heal at a holy site in between fights. If you're able to avoid losing your theological units and slowly widdle down their army of inquisitors, you'll eventually gain enough religious ground to slow it down.

    • @liamail13
      @liamail13 Před 5 lety +2

      A little late to reply but waging a war works too, if you can afford it and its inevitable warmonger penalty. Could be used to physically take cities with holy sites, use military units to eradicate the units (and beliefs), give apostles better protection, and increase overall spread/pressure.

    There is one thing I would like to confirm with your argument about church property and tithe. You said tithe is not better than church property unless a city grows to twelve followers. However according to the text, those 4 followers need not in the same city. For instance, there are city cities with two followers each but the religion dominate neither of them. Tithe could earn one gold while church property have no rewards

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  Před 6 lety +1

      Haha, I knew someone would realize the mistake. Yes, that is correct, the city does not have to be following your religion for its followers to count, nor do the followers have to be from the same city. Tithe could be better, but once again, its one of those situational things that makes it quite difficult to tell which is better.

And it works well combined with believes based on amount of followers. It's pretty much the number one thing i go to when i play Russia, but then again Russia is really strong anyways as it's easy to get earth goddess (favorite pantheon) and sprawl, built cheap lavras, buy temples, faith purchase gurdawas.

    I may have missed it but did you mention that killing a religious unit with a military unit also yields negative pressure for the religion associated with the religious unit? ("Condemn heretic" action in R&F I believe. Just kill the unit in the base game.) That can be a useful defense against an opponent spamming missionaries or apostles if you have military units handy and are okay with going to war (or are already at war). Also, since it isn't theological combat, Monastic Isolation doesn't guard against it.

    what about gurus and inquisitors? are they worth getting?

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  Před 6 lety +10

      I generally don't find them too useful, no. It might be useful to have 1 guru around your missionaries/apostles just in case they get attacked, but I find it better to simply send apostles in groups so that they can just overpower any opposing religious units they run into. Inquisitors are not too worthwhile, especially since you have to expend an apostle to start purchasing them.

      The Saxy Gamer First let me say this, the video was very good and informational for new players. Well done.Having said that, I would like to add this in comments , Sending 1 or 2 gurus are always worth it, Since you won't get a lot of apostles with +20 strength promotion and guru will make sure your unit stays good health and you don't have to back the unit up for healing.
      As for inquisitors , having 2 of them in your empire, you can defend against other religion apostles since they get +35 bonus strength in friendly territory and you can use their charge to remove other religions from your cities. Works very well with Tithe or when you are on backfoot in religious war.
      Also try to send a group of apostles , it will always be better than sending one because ai will always have apostles roaming here and there.
      What I usually do is use the apostle with this promotion "Remove 75% existing pressure from other religions" first and then use other apostles when trying to spread religion to big cities which makes it easier to convert cities especially big ones.
      These are some of the points I would like to convey in addition to a very good video.
      Keep it up man.

      I find that inquisitors are very useful if you are going on offense, since you can convert captured cities for significantly less faith. They are also cheap defensive units if you are up against an onslaught of AI apostles.

      @kayvee256 Před 5 lety +2

      Inquisitors and Gurus become useful after the costs of your missionaries and apostles start to become prohibitive.
      If your inquisitor costs 25% the cost of a missionary, and you need to defend against a foreign religion in your home turf, an Inquisitor will be way more cost effective than a missionary or an apostle.
      If your guru costs 25% the cost of an apostle, then you can send a guru with a small group of apostles and missionaries to make sure that your apostles stay topped up. It won't matter if you're snowballing, but if your three apostles are fighting the enemy's three apostles, having a guru on your side will make a big difference. Only really relevant in theological combat though.

      lots of crusaders. they are stronger than apostles attack stats, when they are in your lands. They have to have all civs of their religion to win, so as long as you dont flip, you dont lose.

      Inquisitors, if you have a religion. Otherwise, just declare war and use military units to kill their faith uinits.

      Declare war and use your military units to condemn heretic to kill the religious units. This is why on MP religious victories are basically impossible.

    Never use all the apostles charges then u have a straight up army then u have 3 or 4 gurus follow them into enemy territory and you just keep resupplying gurus and your gravey keep multiple inquistors in your bordering cities along with maybe 1 apostle

      That I did, I never really use Gurus too much as I don't find them to be overly useful as long as you're careful with your apostles and missionaries. They can be useful if you have to do a lot of theological combat in a game though.

    Saxy Gamer, I have a question for you. What do you think of the Mont St Michel/ reliquaries strategy. And do you think Monastic Isolation is a good combo with this. Or which other beliefs would u recommend for this strategy? I'm playing a game now where I got desert folklore and can generate a lot of faith, but want to use religion to push for a culture victory.

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  Před 6 lety +1

      I think that the Mont St. Michel and reliquaries strategy is a decent strategy, but one that is a little unreliable and quite gimmicky. Monastic Isolation is definitely a good pair with it to make sure you don't accidentally convert cities away from your religion when your units die. It is overall a fairly decent strategy if you can get it to work, but if it fails to work it ends up being a huge waste of resources.

    Does “crusade” benefit Spain’s +14 combat strength to conquistadors when paired with missionaries to make it + 24 ?

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  Před 5 lety +1

      Kind of, yes. It will stack with the addition +10 from having the Conquistador with a missionary, but will not receive the +4 from Phillip's ability, as that requires that the city be following a different religion while Crusade requires that the city be following your religion.
