- Jeff Pilson(bass) -- "I remember the day well. We'd just played with Triumph the night before in San Diego, and had to play AB at 9:00 AM. Back then that was extremely early for all of us. Anyways I remember Don decided to try a new outfit that day we called it the pirate outfit. Wow- turned out to be not such a great idea! Poor guy- got ribbed to death on that one. At least he tried doing something new, but what an embarrassment (like all the other outfits from that era weren't!!). George looked cool in it (I do have a copy and showed my wife a couple years ago so the memory is fairly fresh). Other than that Mick saved the day by saying the highlight of his career was meeting Gladys Knight (who was also on the show) after George inadvertently dissed Detroit by saying it was the low point on the tour. Of course what he had meant was the hotel room he and I had shared that had blood stains and stab marks in one of the beds!! But all in all a very cool experience!"

This was 1985 ... most guitarists had wireless transmitters then! In 1976, it was a different story! You had to plug in then ... unless you were an electronics genius like Tom Scholz!!!!
@@edcollins9377 he's not plugged in with a wireless unit and wireless started appearing in 77 with AC/DC and KISS. Oh and wireless will not let you play lead and rhythm at the same time. :)

When I see this video (all the time) I see a real rock band of an age that is fading away, sadly being replaced by excuses that people call rap, altetnative, and pop. This band that is called DOKKEN is the very group that made me want a band, im 15 and I look forward to hopefully having a band and hopefully bringing back the 80's. One of THE greatest bands ever, if there is anyone who agrees with me, REPLY!😀

I was a Dokken junkie. I remember trying to get back stage passes to see them on The Under Lock and Key Tour. I told their stage manager that Don could have a go with my girl friend if they'd give me a pass. (I was going to dump her after the show anyway. lol)

It was always the album version, that's why I hated Bandstand and yes I'm old try 62. Still dig just seeing these guys no matter what.
I've loved this "performance" for years but realized this unfortunate fact from the get-go. This song sounds better with the added reverb lol.

Dick Clark was so down to earth, unpretentious, and genuinely interested in the bands that played, regardless of genre. You can tell the level of mutual respect these bands had for him and he to them. Mr. Clark just loved music. Legend.

The word "underraated" is very overrated.....how were they underrated? They were Very popular in the 80s.
They definitely didn’t get the radio airplay of other bands, despite their immense talent.

@@victorneckar7743 He just isn't what he use to be. We saw him during this scamdemic. He played at Dr. Pepper Park in Roanoke, VA. Man were people glad to be out and not living in fear. Also, a VA native band called Red Reign opened for him. They were amazing.

This is definitely when the band had their best magic together. George Lynch... what more can you say. One of the greatest talents that ever came out of that era. I sure miss the 70s and 80s. Modern society has lost so much of this old feel for rock music

The solo for Alone Again is my absolute favorite solo off all time. So much passion, so raw, such emotion. Only solo I can feel in my bones.
Yeah and for me the solo of In My Dreams is awesome. One of Lynch’s best guitar solos.

@@tonygarcia9832 there were some good bands in the 70s, these guys, along with other hard rock, and metal bands wouldn't exist without those bands. Bands like Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin, people forget that Van Halen's first album came out in 78'. They worked on that sound throughout the 70s.

Ridicule them all you want, but remember THIS: In my opinion, rock/metal music, back then, WASN'T JUST a "form of music," it was a FASHION STATEMENT, as well! In other words, A LOT of artists "took PRIDE in LOOKING LIKE A ROCK STAR-NOT LIKE AN ORDINARY PERSON!" In my opinion, the same can be said about the FANS, as well! Not only did we did have fun "escaping through the music," but we LOVED LOOKING like rock/metal music fans!

Love this band's first four albums. What I also always enjoyed about American Bandstand is that Dick Clark always got the band or artist to reveal a bit of themselves during the interview segments, as he did here.
unfortunately Dokken only put out 4 studio albums in the 80s plus the live album. after that I was into Lynchmob and Dokken after that. They weren't the same on Dysfunctional.
George is still killing it today,he is a very strong guitar player. Unfortunately poor Don has totally lost his voice.
Back when you recognized the musicians by sight - whether walking into a bar or coming out on stage. Then the 90s emerged and appearance became perfunctory.
Dokken was such an amazing band! Nowadays my kids sing along and know all the words, real! And Lynch's melodic solos were epic! There was something special about their music and the hooks were awesome

Jeff and Mick's backing vocals were always prominent to Dokken's sound.
Dokken, was absolutely awesome in the mid 80’s. For some reason they get compared to Ratt, but they are 2 completely different bands yet immensely talented.
i am pretty sure jaun from Ratt was Dokkens first bass player and George had short black hair Pilson jumped on board pretry quickly
Both bands had horrible lyrics.
Warren DeMartini and George Lynch played similar styles and both are amazing musicians but George tears it apart on under lock and key and back for the attack hard to beat stuff he was doing on those albums. DeMartini is no slouch and tears it up album after album on the ratt records

This was my favorite band in 1980's Don Dokken on vocals crushing it, With George Lynch and the entire Dokken band was so complimentary as a whole. It was great time for artist, creativity in simpler time. Jeff Pilsner, bass, M. Brown people seem to forget in the Band.

@@bakura227 Yeah, being a guitar player myself, I have to laugh at George pretending to play an acoustic for the first few opening bars (not his fault). I always thought it was silly after a certain time that they still made bands pretend to play their songs on the Ed Sullivan Show, AB, etc.

Don Dokken started out as producer and engineer and transitioned into being a fantastic singer!

He also got his first record deal in Germany and connected with the Scorpions adn ended working with them for rehersal while clause recovered from getting vocal chords removed - they recorded a few songs with them which we will never hear, which he said..... he was just helping them out.
Some of the so-called singers of today, don't have half the talent that Don had. He was truly gifted. I pray that he takes some of that talent and mentors a new generation of artists because what they're calling music these days, is GARBAGE !!!! 😮
Lets face it, Dokken's a powerhouse Don ,George ,Mick and Jeff are amazing players and Dokken is honestly the best band during the 80s. Even when Don Dokken split up to Don Dokken with John Norum and all the other outstanding members Dokken rocks!! keep rockin wit dokken!!!

It’s completely lip synced. They may be playing along, but it’s the studio track we’re hearing.
Pretty much all shows like American bandstand and even the British version of American bandstand always did some kind of lip-synching. Basically it's because if for any reason they have to stop the filming and restart it's nearly impossible, or at least terribly time-consuming, to try to restart a song right in the middle and sync up all the playing and everything else. So most shows just did some kind of lip-synch. I don't think Don Kirshner's rock concert did, but that was filmed more like a concert instead of a TV spot.
I heard Alone again and that was it back then. My favorite group in that era
I never ridiculed them I thought of all the hair bands they were the tops because of George Lynch and his guitar mastery.

It just gets me everytime that Dick Clark was so kind and funny to all of his guests, ( i realize it was his job) whether it was Gladys Knight and the pips or Dokken.

Was all a lip-sync. But, seen them live 4 times back in the 80's and they were fucking killer every time. George did nail most of his shit, and it sounded so damn good. Especially the bigger venues where he had 35 to 45 thousand watts pushing it all....

I heard about them performing "Alone Again" on American Bandstand ..been looking for footage since I got the internet several years ago but just saw the interview,,glad to see they did "Just got Lucky" also even though they weren't really playing live but still great !!!
Hands down, George Lynch was and is an absolutely mind blowing guitarist. The solo in “Unchain The Night” is ore of my all tine favorites. He packs it all in one mammoth punch, speed, precision, dexterity, harmony, creativity and flawless execution. I myself have been playing for 30 + years and I couldn’t tie the laces in his shoe. Tremendous talent. Big thumbs up to the uploader for this priceless gem. Great memories. 👍😎🎸

Jeff, thanks for sharing this. You guys were always one of my favorite bands in the 80's. I bought this album soon after its release and was blown away by what you guys gave us. I remember this vividly as well. During this time, I worked in a TV shop. I was the helper at this time, and I remember seeing this for about 20 seconds on AB when we got done repairing someone's TV. Obviously, I didn't get to watch all of it, but I was SO excited to see Dokken on AB.

Alone Again is easily one of their best songs. Interesting that it was written by Don along with Jeff Pilson and not George Lynch. I always imagined George being more involved in the writing process because he plays his heart out on it. But he's just the gun slinger doing his job, brilliantly. In any case, Don Dokken was a great songwriter.
James C actually George Co-wrote many of their songs.
He wrote the solo of course. And he was a lot more involved with their riff based hits and songs.

I saw them after "Under Lock & Key" came out . It was my 2nd rock concert that I ever attended . I was amazed by the music & seeing them perform live . The only thing that dissapointed me was that whenever Don spoke to the crowd , it seemed to me like every other word that came out of his mouth was "F n" this & that ! . . . Literally , that was the only thing that let me down .

Outstanding performance by the Dokken fellas.regardless of the lip-synch. I so much love the axe work by Lynch in this song. Just Got Lucky and Breaking the Chains are my absolute favorites by Dokken! Alas, time takes a heavy toll Don just cannot sing anymore, sigh. But I am greatful. I got to hear them in their prime in the 80's and I remember them kicking much ass!

OMG I was at that Albuquerque show! I thought someone threw something and knocked George Lynch down, didn't realize he passed out from exhaustion and heat!

I was there also. I remember he got hit in the eye by a bottle cap or a penny. I clearly remember Donny coming out after George left the stage holding his hand to his eye and yelled at the crowd to quit throwing stuff at the stage and kick anyone's ass if you see them doing that!
Don finished the set playing guitar and singing Breaking the Chains. Albuquerque was known for being stupid rowdy and throwing stuff at artist even if they liked them

monicka lynn I'm glad i was too young to see this performance and remember it so i'm not reminded of my age. Then again, I think music like this keeps us young. The minute we don't like this kinda music anymore or feel we're too good for it is when we can say we're old.You're probably close to my brother's age. He saw all these bands when they were playing shitty clubs and getting paid in drugs or free drinks because the money wasn't enough to care about.
