    Rick, your videos are so educational and I love your passion for teaching others how to act around horses and how to see things with a critical eye. I’ve never had a horse of my own but before I starting watching your videos I took English riding lessons and I thought it was just fine to use bits and tie downs and all that other junk. I used to believe every thing anyone told me to believe about horses. Now I ride western in just a rope halter. No bits, no tie downs, no pain. Thank you so much for making horses lives better, we need more people like you on this earth.

    Great video Rick! Very educational! Love that sassy bay! I have a sassy bay mare and she is awesome! I love when she and my bay gelding go running around. Gelding throws bucks, mare throws bucks back, gelding is older and chases her around, they both roll, go eat hay, ore running and more bucking. It's awesome watching them interact. Love your horse behaviour videos.

    That is SO true( about what you said about barm witches flipping out saying they are being mean to each other, then going out separating them) a friend of mine goes to a barn where as soon as the horses start playing( running, kicking out) "Having fun") they run out and automatically seperate , bring them in. They dont want people who come to the barn to think that the horses are being aggressive. In my book the horses should be left to have fun etc and " THE PEOPLE" need to be educated.

    Rick, I love watching your horse/herd behavior videos. I find them to be very educational (and also quite hilarious). While I have never owned a horse, I do currently volunteer at a barn where they use horses for therapeutic riding. Since I work with the horses on the ground, I keep your information and experience in mind and I watch the horse's body language. Honestly, knowing how horses communicate has kept me safer than any pretty pink helmet that those barn witches toute! Thank you so much for posting these educational videos! Also, say "hi" to Mr. T and Buddy for me!

    Speaking of taking off halters, I was visiting friends over the holidays and they had two Labradors, a four month old and a six month old. Just as I was being told that the older dog beats up on the younger one we heard this crazy commotion from outside. They had been playing and the larger Lab had his bottom jaw caught in the smaller dog's collar and it had twisted. It was so tight we couldn't disengage the plastic snap buckle and the owner had to cut the collar off with a knife while we held the bigger dog still, he was panicking and thrashing, the smaller dog ... looked dead, his tongue was purple and his eyes were bloodshot and I don't think he was breathing. Finally got the collar off without cutting the dog, thankfully and within thirty minutes both dogs were acting normal again. Pretty scary situation and maybe a lesson learned about not leaving collars on dogs when they're out playing either.

    • @kristenslice561
      @kristenslice561 Před 6 lety

      Well if that's your logic - think about this - what if they got loose and picked up by AC???? Without tags (unless) they're microchipped - that's a death sentence right there for the dogs. AC stray hold is 5 days. They WILL NOT adopt out the adult dogs.

    • @109367
      @109367 Před 6 lety +3

      I was waiting for this comment, seriously it's like $40 at least at my vet, to microchip, and all shelters scan dogs upon entry.

    • @abbyr5287
      @abbyr5287 Před 6 lety

      My dog has a loose collar and it comes undone if it gets stuck on things. I can't tell you how many times she's slipped out of her collar randomly if she just doesn't want to wear it! Lol.
      The reason why she wears a collar is because she likes to take herself for walks. There's no stopping her either. She doesn't run away, she just likes to explore by herself.
      And, not everyone who finds a dog without a collar takes them to the vet to get checked. Some just take them straight home and there's no getting them back then.

    • @109367
      @109367 Před 6 lety

      My dog can also slip out of his because it's loose, he is well contained however and we used to have dogs who got out sometimes WITH collars and tags and people would find them and try to keep them, we had to go out and find the dog ourselves and take the dog back. So the tags didn't help at that point, those people made no effort to contact us.

    • @janismeader924
      @janismeader924 Před 6 lety

      +Kristen Slice animal control doesn't return dogs Chip or no chip tags or no tags. it's the owner or caregiver to come and pick up the dog. they don't have to contact said owner. I have seen boxes of collars being tossed in the dumpster. I worked 2 summers checking dog licenses and have actually believe that myth that it's animal control officer duty to pickup their wayward "child"!

      Sadly one of the fillies in a group of young thoroughbreds we taught to be ridden 40 years ago had the same exact situation occur. This AFTER we told the owner & his daughter to NEVER leave a halter on their gorgeous bay filly. They did not listen to me & sadly the filly when scratching behind her ears caught her hind hoof in webbing of halter & broke her neck!!! Most awful thing we have ever heard of. We NEVER have left halters on any horse unless we`re actually teaching them to lead & be handled.Of all the many thoroughbreds we have worked with, young or old ,stallions or mares, we have never had a problem having them come to us.

    I saw a horse tear half his face off getting caught on a round bale cage BECAUSE he had a nylon halter on that wouldn't break to set him free from the hangup. He was the sweetest guy, completely bomb proof and it broke my heart to see him get hurt so badly because through no fault of his own, he got hung up and took over 6 months to just to heal the horrific physical wounds he sustained. We couldn't ride him for over a year because his face sustained so much damage, not to mention the muscle memory we had to overcome resulting from his fear of wearing anything on his head. We took our time and let him come around, but it was a damned shame it happened in the first place.

    Great video, great commentary, thank you Rick! I took the halter off my donkey after someone told me it is dangerous. Never any problems catching her, I have problems leaving her! LOL

      Try putting pressure on the lead rope, then as soon as you're donkey takes one step drop the Rope. Keep this up untill he realizes he can walk with you, without getting pulled. It worked for mine

    Rick, I may be wrong but at the very beginning of the video when the palomino is rolling, they say "not bad for an old man".... Do you think that both palominos are guy's?

    Speaking about low hot wire, I have actually seen a friend's neighbor 's horses take out a fence. and all do to " horseplay" ( rough play for those who don't know)

    The big "stallion" horse reminds me of my old-man norwegian dole, just a big meatball boss making the ground thunder :P

    I agree about the bay mare. Something you didn't mention but I noticed is that she dropped her nose to the ground partway through, and isn't really traveling with a "pushing" body language.

    Barn witches are just as bad as those dog owners who see two dogs playing and try to fight you for letting your dog ‘attack’ theirs. They usually are the kind of dog owner who has a chihuahua or a shih-tzu and treats the dog like a baby so it snarls at everybody and refuses to eat unless they’re given designer dog food. I hate those kinds of people.

    Both of the palomino adults were geldings/stallions. You can tell by paying close attention to both.
