Nightflyer, took my engine apart and put it back together again thanks to your great videos. However, now it seems like my timing is off. Used a timing gun and it's off by 20 degrees if I'm reading it correctly. My timing mark is to the right of tdc. It's an 80 xs. Can't find info anywhere on how to set electric ignition timing correctly. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

+Gus Cortes There is a good chance the cam is one tooth off.
Do you have stock TCI ignition? If so there is no setting the timing really. Once the stator is bolted into place the timing is set.

+nightflyer12345-thanks for the quick reply! Yes bone stock ignition. So does that mean I'll have to take top end off again to correct timing?

      +Gus Cortes Your welcome.
Well as far as I know you will have to lift the rocker box but not the head. then slide the bearings off the ends of the cam. then they will just be enough room to slide chain over the cam and reposition the chain. one side will be easier than the other to slide chain. but for the life of me I can't remember which. when checking cam and chain here is a video of what it should look like czcams.com/video/tcPaPgg1NqA/video.html

+nightflyer12345 -sounds good. Is there another way besides taking out the engine from the frame to get this done? I'm asking in an attempt to avoid extra, unnecessary work.

When disassembly is at the stage of around 2:00 in this video, it it possible to slide the bearings of the cam and replace with new ones? Im wanting to replace the bearings in my XS but dont want to remove from the frame, nor disassemble to the point that I need to replace gaskets. Anyone able to advise if its possible to replace cam bearings without further disassembling?? Many thanks in advance!

+VMX12k It might be a bit of a challenge .
You must get the two surfaces cleaned so you can put Yamaha bond or what ever sealant you use. don't want rocker box to leak
Make sure you get the bearings pushed all the way back in. you dont want the cam moving side to side.

Make sure all the bolts are removed the one in the back of the head or the two under the spark plugs. I like to leave the valves adjusted then rotate the engine over they can push the rocker box up if it don't come off
