- Do you know what Wednesday’s middle name is or who played Thing in The Addams Family 1964 TV series? How about which actress was originally lined up to play Morticia or what name Gomez could have been called instead? The answers to all of these questions, as well as plenty of other surprising facts relating to the characters and the actors who played them including Carolyn Jones, John Astin, Ted Cassidy, Christina Ricci, Felix Silla, and many others, can be found here in this tribute to everybody’s favourite Halloween all year ‘round household.

Really interesting. You did cover several things I hadn’t heard. Great video.
That's great to hear Cathy and thanks for the support!
Christina Ricci looks a LOT like Carolyn Jones. I'm looking forward to the day when she can play Morticia.
Wouldn't that be great!
Wednesdays middle name was revealed once in an episode titled, "Wednesday leaves home" when the detective sergeant was trying to get some information on her so they could look for her. When told her namevwas Wednesday the detective found it unbelievable abd asked. 'What's her middle name, Thursday?" Mirticia answered, "No, Friday" the name was never used or referred to again. Pugley's middle name was never revealed nor Lurch's last name.
I believe Lurch was his last name because in the episode with his mother, she was named Mother Lurch
Unfortunately I don't remember where I found out the information but in doing the research I read somewhere that Thing's full name is Thing T. Thing.
@@thedarksidepress I think it was said in an episode
Wednesday's middle name being Friday is fun because it used to be Friday's child that was full of woe while Wednesday was loving and giving (now they're reversed), as well as sort of implying that Wednesday is a kind person as well as sad
Having grown up watching reruns of The Addams Family in syndication, I knew a few of those facts already. The facts about the plants were new to me, though. Also because of a set piece I loved, I had made a promise to myself that someday I'd get one of those wicker chairs like the one Morticia had... and about 12 years ago that promise was kept. It's not identical, but it's ooky enough for me. ♥
So if I asked the question, if you could have one prop from the original tv series. Would I be right in thinking that it would be that wicker chair? I'd probably choose it as well. It's definitely iconic of show.
I too, had one of those chairs. My grandkids called it my Queen chair. I believe the studio gifted that chair to Morticia after the show ended.
I have on of those chairs I inherited from my grandma.
Interesting about Pubert. As that's the the name of the third child in the film Addams family values.
I'm sure that there was a lot more that they were able to get away in the film than in the 60s TV series. One anecdote that I read but didn't include was that John Astin and Carolyn Jones weren't permitted to kiss. Don't ask me why, I've forgotten that part but the way that Gomez got around showing his passion for Morticia was with the kissing up her arm instead.
Did you know the Ted Cassidy could play the Harpsichord? And he played it very well.
No, I didn't know that Steven. Ted has turned out to be a far more interesting character than I ever imagined. Thanks for the info!
@@thedarksidepress Did you know that Ted Cassidy and Richard Kiel (Jaws/ James Bond movies) were NOT bothers. Even though lots of people thought so?
@@stevenf1953 I remember when one of them died, people kept thinking it was the other one.
Why did I know her middle name was Friday...
First I became addicted to the Charles Addams cartoon albums as a kid then the television show came along and I wanted to grow up to be Gomez. Unfortunately I turned out looking more like Uncle Fester. I had both the paperback novels. The one by Jack Sharkey was very good. Again sad to say they've both gone missing over the years. I wasn't a fan of the Hanna-Barbera cartoons, nor any of the reboots but think both of the films are very good. I never saw the musical and though the critics didn't like it, the audience seemed quite pleased. Nathan Lane as Gomez was bound to be fun. I hope it gets a film treatment some day. Unlike most folks I quite enjoy the new animated Addams Family film, though I thought the second one awful. I am looking forward to seeing the Tim Burtons take. Mostly happy to see the family still alive and kicking in so many different ways.
This is the best video about the Addams Family I've ever seen! Absolutely brilliant!
I'm glad you enjoyed it Dominique!
The Addams family Live north of Salem Massachusetts.
Did I hear _My Favourite Blonde_ ?
When Gomez married Morticia S2 E3, he called her "my favourite Frump".
The My Favourite Blonde mention Gaynor was in reference to the Bob Hope film of that title but now I wish I'd mentioned that Morticia was a Frump in the video! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to do another called More Things You Think You Know! Many thanks to you :)
@@thedarksidepress Because Sidney Lanfield who directed _The Addams Family_ also directed _My Favourite Blonde_ and instead of calling Morticia his favourite blonde, Gomez called her his favourite Frump. I thought that was a good connection to Sidney's earlier work.
Nat Perrin, who was the producer, and long time writer for Groucho Marx deserves credit for much of the series tone and character. Gomez, clearly captures much of Groucho Marx’s gestures, his cigar and dialog delivery. In fact, much of the shows anarchistic and zany action of the show is reminiscent of the Marx Brothers films. John Astin on talk shows, always seemed so subdued in comparison to his performance of Gomez… much to his talent as an actor.
That's very interesting Clurk. I assumed that it was John Astin borrowing from Groucho but what you've said adds a new level and suggest that it was much more of a planned intention of the production.
@@thedarksidepress Perrin was so close to Marx, that he actually help manage the comedians estate in his final years.
@@clurkroberts2650 It's these kinds of little nuggets of information that make investigating the history of cultural icons like The Addams Family so special. There's so much more depth to this story now thanks to you!
@@thedarksidepress and I certainly enjoyed your video highlighting this cool show. It was so unique… in its “creepy and kooky… altogether spooky” way
The passion between Gomez and Morticia was very much unlike other sitcom couples of the time. Somebody joked that, of all the on-screen couples, these two looked like they really *would* have children.
Am I the only one here just to see if anyone else noticed the extra 'd' the matrix decided to stuff in Addams??
M.E. strikes again.
Fantastic l love the 1960s TV series of the Addams Family , especially Carolyn Jones as Morticia Addams 🖤 🖤 🖤
In the 1990s remake series Wednesday also has a cousin Monday who she has a rivalry with
Thanks for the heads up on that Jonna. I've heard that the 1990s TV series was good but I haven't managed to find a copy of it yet.
I knew them all..hah. atleast the first 7 minutes
actually Cousin Itt does appear in an Addams cartoon though without a name
Is this the one where they're all getting off the bus? I couldn't get a date on that so wasn't sure if it was before the TV series and I emailed the Addams Foundation but didn't hear anything back from them. If you do find out, please let me know.
@@thedarksidepress Page 14 of the Addams cartoon collection, The Groaning Board, has a totally haired creature with no features or body parts that can be seen, on the phone saying this is it speaking. Also on the title page of the same book, with the other members of the family is pictured creature of total hair, though there are eyes and one hand moving to the table. There is another cartoon in a different collection that pictures the whole family on a walk and with then is another Itt like creature, though with hair covered lower legs and feet. That is the cartoon you refer to I think. The Groaning Board was published in 64, the same year the tv show started. since the album contained past cartoons, I think it is easy to surmise that the it cartoon predates the show, Also cousin Itt did not appear right away.
@@skipsmahoy that's really interesting. Thanks for the research!
This has info I has never heard.
It's Friday, I'm in love...didn't need to get to the end to know her middle name!! "OH GRANDPA"!! Oops...wrong show!!
I appreciate the trivia here. Although I've heard some people dispute the story about John Astin picking the name for Gomez out of 2 choices. Been trying to find some concrete proof, but I could only find Wikipedia and this fun video. Thank you.
When last I checked he was teaching acting at his old university. Perhaps he's approachable? Perhaps he wouldn't mind clarifying that one? If you hear anything, please do let me know.
The actress who played Wednesday in The New Addams Family was also good. In fact the entire cast was. They seemed to be trying to capture the feeling of the original series. Even John Astin guest stared in two episodes as Gomez's father. The made for video movie Addams Family Vacation was terrible, although the same actress who played Wednesday in it played her in The New Addams Family. She was good.
I haven't managed to get hold of a copy of the Canadian series. Now I think I must!
How ironic I happend on this video on a Friday. Coincidence? Hmmmm....
Neat video. Tuesday Weld was a popular actress at the time. Wednesday Addams's name was somewhat a parody.
that's what i thought.
Had /still have crush on. Morticia
Don't we all Phyllis?
Friday huh? Wow
from what i herd the original house was torn down and what is there today is a replica .
For those who didn’t get why he said “Thank f*ck it’s Friday!”: That’s Wednesday’s middle name. Remember when he said he was going to tell you her middle name at the end of the video? Well there you have it.
That and the part where he said "Wednesday's middle name is Friday." Bit of a giveaway there.
Love them !
I didn’t know most of this. I grew up watching the movies. Thank you!
I'm pleased you liked it Ruby!
I’ve got all the old books. The books are waaay racier and funnier than the show could afford to be.
I agree Magnum Cipher. And Charles Addams was a far crazier real life character than any of his creations!
can’t wait to see Jenna Ortega as Wednesday!!🔥🔥🔥
I've seen some behind-the-scenes now and I'm even more excited to see her Wednesday. I think she's going to be great!
Wish the video was longer
So do I! And with all the new information that viewers have been offering here, I'm thinking a part II will be forthcoming.
VERY nicely done!
Thank you very much!
cool 👍👍
Been trying to leave a comment about how much I enjoyed this video, especially the part on the real house at 21 Chester Place, but when I post a link to a website where you can find information detailing the complete history of this famous house, the comment doesn't get posted. I guess that's a no-no even though it has a direct relation to "The Addams Family" 60's sitcom, and to some of the content discussed in this video. Just thought other Addams Family fans would also enjoy reading and learning more about this house, if they had never stumbled upon that website before, but I guess it's not allowed here.
Great point James. If anyone is reading this and curious to know more about the history of the real Addams house, just Google "21 Chester Place Addams family house" and you'll find lots of resources. Personally though, I want to know more about Charles Addams' home which was meant to be the real inspiration for much of the interior fixtures in the tv show. I emailed the Addams Foundation when I was doing the research but they din't come back to me.
@@thedarksidepress can't put the web address, but the website is called 21 Chester Place "The mystery behind the real Addams Family house." I'm sorry to hear that The Addams Foundation did not get back with you, but the video came out great nonetheless 👍
"So You Think You Know Everything About The Addams Family"
... no, who told you something so far from the truth?
I just enjoyed the show as every other normal kid and never investigated beyond that.
I dispute that Tuesday's child is full of grace, I was born on Tuesday and I'm clumsy!
You may be clumsy, but I’ll bet you’re quite lovable!
@@edryba4867 I try to be, thank you for your kind words!
I liked the Munsters the best the Addams family we're okay I just loved the Munsters the best I loved grandpa he was a bat and trying to be a scientist lol 🤭🤣😂 and Spot was an dragon and Eddie we're so cute and precious and Herman were a hilarious 🤣😂🤣 guy as Frankenstein.Bewitched is my other favorite reruns.
While watching this I got a scam call from Adams, Tennessee and idk what this means
Positively spooky!
My bad, I thought it was the Munsters.
lol... I knew ALL of that, I'm a HUGE Addams Family fan, I even have the comic book in hardcover & I have the 1 seasons on DVD & the Movies on DVD plus, the animated movie just to add my collection. Plus a Funko pop figure of Gomez because he's my favorite character. :)
I'm impressed! Out of curiosity, if you could have any item of clothing or prop from the original tv series, what would it be?
@@thedarksidepress : Ohh.. that's a hard question, lol. I'd LOVE to have that iconic polar bear that stands in their living room. I'd put it in my living room lol.
@@thedarksidepress: Or the clock too, that one that does the lion noises, lol.
@@mrs.morticiaaddams8075 The Polar Bear would be a good one. In my research, I recall reading that it still exists and is in a bar somewhere in the US. Please don't ask me to retrace my steps and find out where, I did a LOT of reading for this :)
Fester was not Gomez's brother. He was Mortisha's uncle.
I do mention that difference in the video.
If Wednesday’s middle name is Friday, where was that revealed? Was it in an episode of the TV show? If not, where did that information originate?
Season 1 Episode 10 'Wednesday Leaves Home' (1964). Morticia phones Missing Persons asking them to find her little girl Wednesday. The policeman retorts, "I'll find her Tuesday if I can, just don't give me any deadlines." "Wednesday is her name!" " Oh, and I suppose her middle name is Thursday." "No, it's Friday!" Exclaims Morticia. There you have it Albert. In hindsight, perhaps I should have included a clip or something in the video but I liked too much how it played out as it is.
@@thedarksidepress
Ok. Thank you so much. I do vaguely remember that episode.
Wednesday Friday Addams 💀👍🏻
Wednesday's middle name is Tuesday, and her first name is Monday ...!
I read once that Charles Addams didn't want the family to have his surname, and he wanted to call them the Flotsams or the Harrods. It was in some magazine, maybe starlog that I read that, right prior to the release of Addams family values.I haven' t been able to find anything to back it up, though. So is that true?
I can't say that I've heard that one Sean but in my research, I recall reading that Charles' second wife, Barbara Barb, who was a lawyer, had divorced Charles in 1956 and in the process managed to secure for herself the film and TV rights to the characters that he'd created. When the Producers came to her to secure the TV rights, she held out to see how far she could push the price up. Does this ring a bell with you? It's possible that what you read may be related to this story, that Charles and the shows Producers considered an alternate name for the family in order to get around the legal control that she had.
@@thedarksidepress I don't even recall reading that Charles had a wife, but it is possible. My guess was that everyone was used to calling them "the Addams family," because they were drawn by Addams, so they went with that astheir family name. Growing up, I often wondered why the Addamses had a commonplace name, unlike say, the Munsters or the Grusomes.
looks like Gomez' "cigar lighter's" flame is animated, not real. (3:23-3:34, 4:06-4:13)
I don’t think they could do such good motion tracking back then. It’s most likely an ethanol flame, which looks realistic but isn’t very hot. Though I’m looking for light spill from the flame, and can’t see any.
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 they didn't need motion tracking, many visual effects back than were hand painted and they looked all from silly and unbelievable to gorgeous and life like
