- CARTOON EVOLUTION #28 - THE ADDAMS FAMILY
Just in time for Halloween, I take a look at the history and evolution of the Addams Family, the creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky creations of cartoonist Charles Addams, who developed the characters in a series of New Yorker cartoons between the late-1930s and early-1960s. First adapted to the screen in 1964, the Addamses have lived a long and fruitful life in various adaptations, remakes, and reboots. Despite various periods of obscurity, the franchise remains one of the most beloved ever.
I discuss how the Addamses gave evolved over time, and spotlight their various changes in appearance, name and personality over time. Here's my look at The Addams Family through the years!

There's nothing that screams relationship goals like the relationship of Morticia and Gomez.
oh yeah
Millie and Moxxie (Helluva Boss) come damn close.
Yes, I agree 100% Gomez & Mortica are the best ever!!!!! 🖤
Agreed 100%!!!!
@@mitchellpatterson1829 kinda, but moxxie is a wimpy loser. both gomez and morticia are equally strong, capable characters. it's better to be a gomez than a moxxie.
I had no idea Morticia was the first member of the Adams family created. I just always assumed they were created as a unit. At least the four main members.
The original sitcom is near the top of my list, but the Raul Julia Addams Family movies will always be my favorite version.
Facts 🙌🏻
Agreed.

No one could ever fit the role of Gomez than Raul Julia. He fit the role perfectly along with Anjelica Huston as Morticia, making a fantastic couple in both live action movies. He will forever be an icon for his performance.
He was a master in the role! Why did he have to pass away! why!
when I first heard Raul Julia was going to play Gomez I had only seen him in very serious dramatic roles but he turned out to be a great Gomez!
@@SpamEggSausage I felt the blood pumped passion in his rant in Addams family 2 in the police station, such passion!
Ah... Antonio Banderas. Don't believe me, watch the first Spy Kids movie.
The *definitive* Gomez Adams was, and always will be *John Astin!*
So sad that Addams died before he could’ve gotten to see the 90’s films
And too bad that he is rolling in his grave when the animated movies came out
@@nickytembo4112 sooooo true.
@@nickytembo4112 those new animated movies are trash
@@He1IoDev I know right but thankfully with Addams Family 2 bombing critically and financially, Hopefully MGM will learn from their mistakes.
@@nickytembo4112 when i saw that an addams family 2 are coming out i couldnt believe that they were making another one
Fun to learn more of the history behind a childhood favorite. Addams Family Values is a masterpiece with Joan Cusack as an excellent foil! Although unlicensed, Melissa Hunter's Adult Wednesday web series was a great addition to this franchise too.
Loved Melissa Hunters series! Truly, they should have worked with her to make that into a full series. Of course now we have the new Wednesday series on Netflix, which isn't bad, but falls into that supernatural, highschool teen drama trope and does not have that addams family charm we came to love. Wednesday is much too soft in the new series, hardly any chemistry between gomez and morticia... the actress that portrayed wednesday was great though despite what she was working with. She carries that show.
@@unicornplayswhat Agreed. AWA was well written - with the right feel for the character.
Mr. Addams truly was awesome! Interested into the macabre and oddities- his creativity would be seen again with Guiermo Deltoro, Tim Burton and even Cassandra Peterson! Thank you for doing such a wonder evolution on such an iconic creation! Happy Halloween! 🎃 ❤
At 7:57 the "mute" Lurch concept was immediately changed to a talking role after Cassidy ad-libbed "You rang" during rehearsals and got a laugh.
Love John Aston and. Raul Julia as Gomez! A hilariously enthused lover and embraces the horror like breathing the air! Their portrayals are hilarious as they are fearsome- and I don't blame their charged magnetism for Mortisha!
The 90s films are the best.
WAY BETTER than the newer animated adaptations by MGM!
Agreed
@@nobod2567 while the 90s films were special the recent CGI films weren't that bad
Besides the amusing stage show and the mediocre 2019 film, most of the "Addams Family" stuff I've seen came from the 1990s (excluding that "Reunion" movie). That and their guest appearances on Scooby-Doo.
It's really fascinating learning about the creator's influences for the original illustrations, which in a way ties in well with the whole 'no different than you and me, despite our eccentricities' theme of the Addams family.
Happy Halloween Dave!
I remember watching The Addams Family back in 1992 when I was a kid, it was funny and hilarious. I'm happy that it's still show on CZcams and Watch Cartoon online so why haven't they released the show onto DVD yet just like the original Addams Family cartoon from the 60's. Because it deserved a comeback after 28 years and would made me happy to watch the whole Addams Family episodes from the 90s.
I wish they were animated in stop motion to give it the same feel as Coraline.
For my family, no Halloween will be ever complete without watching and re-watching the first two 90’s movies, the Addams Family and Values.
How, Dave you are so good to us TWO cartoon evolution videos in A MONTH??? COOLLL
*BAD*
YEAH!!!
The Barry Sonnenfeld Addams Family films are absolute classics, I used to be scared of these films growing up (to be fair I was easily frightened by anything) but nowadays I freaking love them to pieces and I recently rewatched them on CZcams when they had them Free To Watch months apart.
I know many despise the recent reboot films but I enjoy them for what they are, it's not high art but dumb enjoyable fun, but the original movies will always be the best ones.
The 1990s Movies were great, and the new Netflix Show "Wednesday" was surprisingly fantastic. I was very sceptical when I discovered it, but it is extremely well made and the cast is just amazing. The main story arc might be a bit too transparent, but the whole presentation of the show is just so great that it hardly matters. And big kudos to Jenna Ortega for presenting an amazingly convincing Wednesday. She had to do a lot with minimal facial expression and delivered a flawless performance!
The 1960's sitcom is why the Addams Family became so beloved and developed a huge fanbase.
I think the funny thing about both The Munsters and The Addams Family is that both were some of the shortest lived of the 1960's high concept sitcoms, yet both have enjoyed a strong mainstream cult following through reruns that they still remain influential to this day. Though, while Munsters did have an obscure 1980's revival sitcom and a couple telefilms, most of their projects were unsold pilots and failed revivals. While Addams had 2 cartoon series, The Munsters only had a strange pilot that would have focused extensively on Eddie and 2 new kid companions while Grandpa and Herman were there for branding. Then of course, there was the 1313 Mockingbird Lane pilot, which was really good but felt like an in franchise name only adaption. No greater evidence exists that the original 90's movies were integral to the Addams popularity than the fact they had bigger staying power.
I would have loved to have 1313 Mockingbird Lane green lit. I would've watched the hell out of it.
I was in the Addams family musical in my senior year and it was the most fun musical I was in out of the 3 musicals I was in 🖤
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, one of the company behind The Addams Family franchise (also as a current distributor for the original 1964 TV series and 1991 film under Orion Pictures brand, as well as The Addams Family 2019 and 2021 animated film also produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) which also currently ownership with Tee & Charles Addams Foundation.
i've always been a fan of the addams family concept, is SO interesting! Actually, the 3d movies were really bad, not only for old fans but also for people that never saw anything about the addams family, is just bad. But this new netflix series looks SO AMAZING! And also, i think there's no other person that can do a better job than tim burton in this series. Literally, one of my favourite directors is making a series of addams family, how is that not gonna be good??
Ich finde die beiden 3d Filme sehr nah an der Vorlage.

@@sS0O0L "I find the two 3D films very close to the template."
YES! Nothing like a surprise cartoon Evolution! Thank you so much Dave!
Surprisingly outside of the Theme Song my first introduction to The Addams Family was through _The New Scooby-Doo Movies._
In the original TV series, Grandmama was Gomez's mother. Granny Frump was played by Margaret Hamilton in three episodes. (Fester was her brother.)
I remember seeing Addams Family reunions the most because of Tim Curry
I like the 1992 Addams family because it was one of the first introduction of the Addams family franchise, and I remember Cartoon Network use to air it in the late 90s during October. Plus it has familiar voices in the series.
By far the best Addams incarnation is the original series. It was so underrated in its humor and such wonderful cast members! John Aston was a genius as Gomez, by playing his part with such flair as an eccentric billionaire. Carolyn Jones played Morticia with such grace. I think the networks should have developed the series so it could have lived on in more seasons. Although I agree that the characters were not spot on to what Charles Addams had envisioned, I would argue that they were a good facsimile of what he wanted, and catered to the audience of the time. When the first movie came out, and the subsequent sequel, I felt that most of the casting was great, but lacked the wild humor that I came to enjoy from the series. The only cast member I did not favor, (although he is a brilliant actor) was Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester. The look was good, but I was so use to Jackie Coogan's voice that I would have enjoyed that more. The raspy low voice of Lloyd just didn't seem to fit. Any of the animations that were out there just didn't make sense to me. It seemed as if the Networks just wanted to ride off the original series, but try to make it "fit" the current decade, and that caused the animated shows to suffer. I think once you have good casting, good script writing, you are bound to have a good show. If ever the powers that be would like to do another series, they should at least look at the original series, and use that as a strong template for any live action show. Yes you can make it dark, but don't lose the light-heartedness of the characters. It is what made the Addams' the cult classic series it is today. Right Bubala?
The animated 90s Addams are the show i saw and the voices and characters are so cool and i love them as well as the 1960s addams.
A sequel to Addams Family Values was never meant to be; during its filming Julia was already terminally ill. Replacing him wouldn't fly.
I've never got an announcement of a bonus Cartoon Evolution this month! Or rather a pop culture evolution of the Addams Family
Yeah, l love pop culture.
Tim Burton would've been a perfect director for a Adams Family movie!
This aged well! He's directing the Wednesday series which i'm sure youve heard about by now
@@hoaxwashere4697 Tim Burton directing the Wednesday series is mentioned near the end of the video.
The original sitcom will always be my favorite for many reasons. Yet, I love Raul Julia's and Angelica Houston ' s performances as I like the original performances in the sitcom.
I love The 90s Films of The Addams Family and The Hanna-Barbara Series of The Addams Family was The Best and The Two Addams Family Movies were really good so this is a great Halloween Evolution so I hope there will be A Voice Evolution of The Addams Family and Happy Halloween Dave!💝🤟🎃👻🤣🖤🧡
The Addams family are really iconic
The first 2 90s version of Movies are my favorite interpretation of the Addams Family.
As a kid The Addams Family was one of my favorite shows. I went to school with Ken Weatherwax at Walter Reed Jr. High in North Hollywood in the late 60’, he was a polite, funny kid who died to young. RIP Ken.
This may be my favorite video of the Evolutions Dave. So many childhood memories of watching the original tv show and the 90s movies. Thank you for all the extra details.
Love the classic first TV version!
The cartoon from 1992 was the one that introduce me to The Addams Family.
I have to admit that thevnew Addams Family is my absolute favourite
As usual, great work, David! Learned a lot from this!
can you do the Evolution of Alvin and the Chipmunks
I love the Adams and I adore that you’re talking about them now
Great video Dave. Happy Halloween!
I just watched the new film, I didn't knew that it has such a great history. Thank you for sharing and a great video, Dave! And Happy Halloween 🎃
Fun facts and additional info: The All New Scooby-Doo Movies episode, Scooby-Doo meets The Addams Family: Wednesday is Missing and the 1973 & 1992 animated series, The Addams Family all of these mentioned are produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and currently owned and distributed by MGM Television (current holder of The Addams Family franchise) and Warner Bros. Entertainment. Coincidentally, MGM, the company behind The Addams Family franchise is also the original home for Hanna-Barbera, and the company who also created Tom and Jerry cartoons created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (H-B founders) in 1940.
now tell us why HB Wednesday is wearing pink
Happy Halloween Dan, thank you for this spoooooky cartoon evolution
Amazing l, this is BRILLIANT!!!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN 🎃
I love the original TV series. The actors and their performances were much more attractive than the others. Cartoons don't really draw me any more, so I've never watched the animated series.
Grew up with the 1992 cartoon.
It was awesome. 😂
Perfect Timing for the release of the Video :)
Makes sense to do this for the Halloween Season
In the mid-2000s, there was a cartoon I remember watching about 2 kids that I thought for an absolute fact were Pugsley and Wednesday Adams, they were a boy and girl with striped clothes getting into mischief. Years later, I found out it was actually called Edgar and Ellen and had nothing to do with the Adams family.
Thank you very much, I love the Addams family and it was great to see all their different versions!
Thanks for this
The 60s series is my favorite, the 91 movie and its sequel a close second and the amazing Wednesday series a close 3rd. Jenna Ortega knocked that one out of the park.
What a great choice for Halloween, Dave!
Thank you Dave for putting on a evolution of the Adam's Family I didn't know that you did one of these Evolutions I mean of course it is Halloween 🎃 but still Thank you so much ❤️
Wow I'm surprised. I had a feeling that a Cartoon Evolution of the Addams Family was set to happen, but didn't expect it sooner considering you did Gossamer 11 days ago.
In addition, this is the 2nd time you had 2 Cartoon Evolutions in a single month following your Animaniacs and Charlie Brown/Peanuts Cartoon Evolutions in November 2020 of last year.
Finally, wouldn't this be an amalgamation of both a Pop Culture/Cartoon Evolution considering that while they did originated via Cartoon comics you did included the Live-Action stuff (the 1960's show, the 1990's movies)?
Also Happy Halloween Dave.👻👻🎃🎃💀🐈⬛🦇🧟♂️
Didn't expect this, Dave
My favorite depiction is-and likely always will be-the 90’s movies. The first film was one of the first VHS tapes I watched when I figured out how to work the tape player and TV as a kid, and I spent many happy hours with it growing up. I still remember my mom taking me to see the Addams Family Values in theaters, and being the only people there that night. I’m pretty certain that my love for black humor, twisted comedy, and gothic stuff all trace back to the first Addams Family movie, and in particular both Morticia and Wednesday were role models for me as strong, independent, free-thinking women who cared deeply for their loved ones and fought to protect them when necessary. I wanted a Thing of my own, I practiced the Mamushka, and to this day I would love to own that cuckoo clock.
Runner-up would be the 90’s cartoon series. I remember that it would be shown on Cartoon Network back-to-back with Beetlejuice, and I loved both of them.
I must agree: the Addams Family Reunion is a bad movie. I remember watching it with my friend who owned the tape, thinking that we would see another reunion with all the colorful and kooky relatives who attended Uncle Fester’s farewell ball in the first movie, and I was mightily disappointed when it became obvious that they were instead taking the Camp Chippewa Addamses vs preppies situation and building the entire film around it. What a waste.
This might be one of my very favorite episodes of Cartoon Evolution. The Addams family is so deeply important to me, and I loved seeing how they'd changed over time, especially the parts that I wasn't aware of before this video.
I've seen most of these, and while my favorite is still the 2 90s live action films, the one that influences me most is the cartoon that followed them. Not only was it my first exposure the the Addams Family, but it gave context to a lot of bits and pieces I'd seen in other media growing up, like The Gruesomes in The Flinstones.
You were expecting maybe, uh, the Ninja Turtles?
Did you change your thumbnail to capitalize off Wednesday? That's a big brain move. 😱
My favourite Addams family is the life action 1964-1966 with Carolyn Jones and John Astin.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🏆
That was brilliant! Thank you! My favorites are the 90’s films
Happy Halloween Dave!
The Scooby Doo iteration of The Addams family is my favorite.
My high school performed the Addams family musical in my first year. This was also my first introduction to the series.
The 1992 animated series is my favorite, because it was based on the movies and had the theme song, which the movies didn't have.
I grew up with the Hannah babera show
Surprised that you did the Addams Family as well but it's fitting giving the month and the date. But personally I do like the 2nd Hanna Barbera series the original live action series and their Scooby appearances the best.
This is awesome work and very well thorough research!
Can you possibly do more Hanna-Barbera evolution character videos? I'd like to see characters like Huckleberry Hound and/or Yogi Bear have an evolution video!
i hate to say this but you forgot Adult Wednesday which aired on CZcams as that was badass to watch
I didn't forget it. It was not an official production, and I do not cover parodies in these videos.
So you released a Halloween themed show on Halloween. Cool. But I’m more excited cause this the first Cartoon Evolution I’ve watch that wasn’t made by Warner Brothers
Good video I liked it
They’ve never interested me but the video looks good
Snap Snap, the Addams Family Snap Snap.
Though not an official part of the franchise I really like the yourtube videos of "Adult Wednesday Addams"
_The Addams Family_ : A Cartoon EVIL-ution! *Cartoon Evolution intro plays, but leads into the macabre clan's double-snapping theme song*
Did you know that Lurch made a record called “The Lurch” in 1965.
Addams family is a classic :)
Appreciate this video, considering the fact that I did this musical in High School, and now again in College.
I didn't know Addams Family been around for 83 years.
Imagine if Munsters & Addams family had a team up. Could be amazing
Something different 💯
Question for Dave: You said that Cousin Itt was created for the show but he seems to be in the picture at 4:32 of this video. Was he added to the comic strip after the show? I thought the New Yorker stopped running the comics after the series debuted.
As for my favorite versions of the Addams Family, the live-action movies are absolute masterpieces and I'm a big fan of the musical as well.
Happy Halloween Dave Lee Down Under!!!
You can never truly evolve the Addams...like fine wine, they get better with age!
Then the movie happened, the wine finally went sour!
@@burritocat6038 just the way they like it! 🎃 💀
Who would’ve thought the actors and studio named these iconic characters 😮, I never figured that would occur !

Hi there Dave! Nice to see you again. Your animation evolution videos are so enjoyable and informative, I love them.
Have you been vaccinated yet?
Wow cool
Additional fun fact: Maila Nurmi (Vampira) modeled her legendary attire after Morticia in a costume contest that would lead to Horror TV host viewers were familiar with.
I love the Addams Family! It would be cool if you could do a pop culture evolution on Dracula next Halloween!
Might be because I am a 90's baby, but the 90's films will always be what I mean when I talk about the Addams Family! I would have loved to of seen Tim Burton's version, I wish I didn't know that he had been asked, imagine a blend of the 90's films and Beetlejuice
I like all the versions of The Addams family.
Personally, I don't think there's a "better" 90s Addams film. I think both of them just belong in one huge movie. I just can't watch one without watching the other.
