  • Some of you guys were asking for a follow up on my Remington Versa Max unboxing video from last year.
    Overall I have been extremely happy with the Versa Max and how it has performed. I just have a couple minor complaints, but I would definitely buy this gun again.

    My versamax has been absolutely solid. I hope the new company that’s making Remington now brings back the solid American quality that Remington had during the years when they were owned by DuPont. Mine was purchased in 2017, and it’s been spectacular

      I was at a gun show over the weekend and they had some brand new Remington pump action 12ga 870 Field Masters and I was amazed at the quality! Much better than the Express! If the Field Master is that good, I can't wait to see the new Wing Masters! I am told that the new head of Remington is absolutely dedicated to quality! It looks like Remington is poised to reclaim it's position in the firearms world!!!

    I have owned my Versamax in MO Duck Blind for a little over 2 years now and love it. It hasn't batted an eye at the abuse waterfowlin has put it through. I've had to break ice with the buttstock to get to a downed duck and have had the bolt frozen shut with ice so tight I couldn't open it by hand...yet everytime a bird tries to land in the decoys she still goes bang and cycles. No hang-ups from mine and it's great to hear that another VM does the same. Thanks for postin the follow-up and I'm damn ready for this year's waterfowl season!

      We'll have 3 of them in the blind this year. Two Duck Blinds, and my Waterfowl Pro. Everyone in our regular group is shooting one now.
      We love them!

    I have the same gun and love it, hasn’t jammed on me once. It the same gas system as the Benelli M4. I’ve had the benelli 1 and 2 as well as the beretta A400 extreme, sold all of those and kept this one. Only problem after 1000 rounds or so is the cam pin gets chewed up, I shoot mainly 3.5” shells and can’t find a replacement cam pin. Buy several if you can find them. Going to take the pin from my M4 and see if it fits. I agree with you on that the shells are a little hard to load compared to the benellis

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      I haven't had the problem with my cam pin just yet, but my cousin had that issue two seasons ago. He was able to file down and smooth out a burr that had developed and then it started working good as new.

    Nice job on the video. I own the realtree 26" barrel version (as well as a V3). Forearm is the same issue on all Versa's but I found with an extra push and tighten its not so bad. I'll try a few spacers to see if it helps. looks like the same stops used on kitchen drawers. The v3 is also a great gun. recoil is slightly more due to it being lighter. If I could only have 1 it would still be one of the Versa Max waterfowl versions offer much better corrosion resistance with Nickel plated barrel and internals

    Do you ever take the stock off of your gun to clean the spring inside the stock ? I never knew about that spring last year and the gun smith told me whenever that gun gets wet I have to make sure that spring gets cleaned an it eventually rusted away to the point my gun wouldn’t eject any shells... I’ve been trying to find a video on how to do it but have been unsuccessful

      There is an application called Wallpaper Engine. I believe it is $4. It allows you to download custom and interactive wallpapers that are community made. This one is a Duck Hunt wallpaper that I found. It lets you click on the ducks and they fall out of the sky like in Duck Hunt!

      I still love the gun. I've only have problems when I let it get super super dirty and its really really cold out. The bolt will start getting gummed up and slow down. That all 100% comes down to me just being really hard on it and not cleaning it as often as I should.

      So far no issues with the grips. I don't have a brand new model to compare directly to, but they are not sticky and are not peeling at all. The camo dip and powdercoat/paint on the trigger frame is pretty low quality though.

    And what about the weight for the Versa Max ? I heard from my friend that it’s really the only issue is the weight. Maybe because he preferred and used Berreta.

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 6 lety

      +Abdulmohsen Jamal the Versa Max is one of the heavier high end waterfowl guns. It’s never been an issue for me because I only waterfowl hunt. It sits on the blind or is on my back until I gotta shoot, so I’m not constantly holding it. If I had to walk a field for pheasant, I would definitely want a lighter gun.

    Versa Max kicks a lot less than the Stoeger 3500 or the Benelli Super Vinci that I have shot. Camo chipping seems to be a common problem; I saw a Benelli Super Black Eagle II that was ten times worse than your gun.

    how do the stock choke tubes work

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety

      I realized after I uploaded that I forgot to go over that. I did a little pattern testing last year, but I'm wanting to do some more this year and maybe do a video of it. In my first test all of the stock chokes threw good patterns at 20-30 yards, but with little difference between the different chokes. At 40 yards the patterns started to fall off, again with little difference between the chokes. I need to do some more testing with it to really figure them out, and I want to compare them with the Carlson's chokes I got last year as well.

    What did Remington say when you contacted them about the loose fore end, my gun is right out of box and has the "play" wiggle that you described. Seems odd that a brand new gun has an issue?
    Also, when you inserted those rubber stoppers shown in video what size are they and are they self-adhesive? Have you had any secondary issues from adding these stoppers and did it completely solve the problem?
    Thanks, bit frustrated this is brand new with an issue.

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety +2

      +Arron DeGracia I never called Remington. It's just the way they are made. We now have 3 Versamaxs in our group and every single one of them was like that. At first I thought it was an issue, but after researching its like that on every one. I haven't had any issues with the spacers. There should be an Amazon link to the description of the video. If not, I'll add a link. They are self adhesive.

    • @arrondegracia3724
      @arrondegracia3724 Před 7 lety

      Did you use super glue or some type of adhesive to get rubber bumpers to stay? The ones I ordered from the link have adhesive but not very strong and they slide off...

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety +1

      Arron DeGracia I cleaned the area with a little alcohol, and just stuck them on. I haven't had any issues. I check them when I clean the gun just to make sure they're not coming off. They seem to be sticking very well for me.

      I have still never done an extensive pattern test. I had no problems killing ducks with any of the factory chokes though. However, I have been shooting a Carlson's mid range this whole season and have been extremely happy.

    • @kylebroadhead5853
      @kylebroadhead5853 Před 6 lety +1

      I've pattern tested Carlson's Long Range side by side with the factory pass shooting choke. The Carlson's Long Rang choke outperformed the factory choke at 45 yards. Denser pattern and had about 15 more BB's per target than the factory choke.

      @travish4045 Před 5 lety +2

      Yeah, it's not uncommon with slot of the factory dipped guns. Browning/Winchester duratouch stuff is generally pretty good, but it has its own issues. Don't ever use mosquito spray around those things, the coating gets sticky and it never stops being sticky.

    What is with this stupid fad of guys saying they don't clean their guns. It's not cool to do that, and most guys probably clean the living crap out of their guns and still claim to 'runnin them dry' and all of that. Clean you and take care of your gear. Remington had the issue with dirty rifles going bang remember??

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 5 lety +2

      I'm not aware of this being a "fad". I did this for a single season just to see if the gun would continue cycling properly when the carbon started building up. It's not like I was shoving dirt and mud in the gun, or jamming sticks in it and trying to fire. Like I said, I still wiped the gun down so it wouldn't rust, and always checked for debris in the chamber and barrel.
      I thoroughly cleaned the gun after the season and it looked like new, and now I clean it multiple times during the season.

    • @jayjdietrich
      @jayjdietrich Před 5 lety

      I don't know, but some manufacturer tells me how reliable and maintenance free their gun is, I'm just the kind of guy who will try to prove them wrong. I shot four or five cases of shells a year through my SBE II and never cleaned it for four years and I hunt on the salt flats of south Texas. I didn't even bother to rub it down or run a snake through the tube after season. Just dragged it out of the case and started hunting the next year. The outside of the barrel where the rib attaches rusted, the dip cracked and chipped less than I thought it would, even around the ejection port, and no telling what the action spring in the stock looked like. I imagine it was pretty rough. Probably is rougher yet since I sold it to a like minded friend for $700 less than I paid for it and he loves the thing. Next up, VERSA MAX! I can hardly wait! They aren't like the blued guns I've had to baby through the harsh marsh and still looked liked rust-o-matics! If I really like the VM, I might take a little better care of it, but no promises! I'm not the kind of guy who polishes my hammers. I do have a love for blue and wood rifles and I baby them A LOT, but out there in the salt is no place for babies.
