Melfi is the hero of this series. Even though she smitten and attracted to Tony she refuses to give in to the flesh and always maintains her professionalism. A trait that every other character in this show lacks.
Yeah she was attracted to him in her own way. But she was smart not to get intimately involved with him. It's like she knew Tony was beyond help for a long time and that he was a sociopath, yet she still kept seeing him. She was fascinated with him and obviously struggling with her sexual desires...but she knew getting involved was dangerous. Really liked her character.
She would have eventually succumb to her weakness

The internal conflict in Melfi's character between her sexual attraction to Tony and her rigid professionalism is very well acted here. I love how there's so much subtlety in her eyes and body language but enough that it's clear to see.
The contrapposto way she sits, a defensive arm across her body yet it shows off her curves.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people throw around the word "sociopath" when it comes to Tony. Tony is many things, but he's no sociopath. He can be quick to anger at times and he has some of the self-centered mindset of his mother - even Tony himself acknowledged this during the series and was worried that he'd become like his mother (which he didn't) - besides which he has the natural leader mindset of his father: but he is no sociopath.

I love how Tony always has a come back to melfi, “because of our prior clinical relationship, I just can’t do it.” “What you can’t eat?” It also adds to the idea that’s planted in melfi’s head later that she can’t possibly help Tony no matter how hard she tries. He’s just a scumbag through and through. I also like though that as much melfi may be undeterred by Tony, she can’t help but be genuinely sexually attracted to him. She smiles the second she realizes who’s calling her and her whole demeanor changes, awesome acting by both Gandolfini and Bracco.
He is charming
I find that so interesting. How she expresses herself fully because he isn’t there to see her while they are on the phone, but in person she maintains professionalism. It’s a little window into her feelings for him.

Tony is being incredibly smart and intellectual In this scene and very passionate … you can tell he learned alot from Melfi and the Dr.Phil shows he was watching, nothing like Gary Cooper tho . The writers did a incredible job, the fact that the cast never got an award or at the very least soft drinks of choice was a total blow… they couldn’t sell it.. they weren’t respected. All they needed was 10 more points to cover the spread.

Compare this to the first time he tried to kiss her- she pulled away immediately. Now she waits till it’s over to say something. There’s a dichotomy in her- part of her wants Tony the other part tells her it’s a bad idea. She lingers and sides with the logos rather than the pathos. It’s somewhat of a shame, they could have saved each other. You can tell each deeply cares about the other. Wish we got a scene of Melli reacting to Tony getting popped in made in America
I love how Tony says that the reason he kills people and gets involved in various other crimes is just to "feed his children". There are an infinite number of legal and ethical ways to feed your kids.
There's really not - especially not dignified ones. Ethics are subjective, which is another way of saying "not real"
