    Love the FMS warbirds. I almost bought this 1700mm but settled on the 1450mm version of the same for transporting.
    I've owned 4 of them. Flying the Red Tail. V8 version now and have a 2nd new one in the box (insurance policy).
    Non of my FMS 1450mm have had the main strut problems you mentioned. Probably because they are a little lighter. But the P Factor on takeoff and landing rollout is equally challenging.... Always wants to veer off track and hard to keep straight .
    I did bump my motor up to the next FMS size motor... the 580kV as a drop in replacement to the stock 540. Just that simple small swap out made a huge difference in vertical climb out power.

    BTW.. Cavitation is a phenomenon in which the static pressure of a liquid reduces to below the liquid's vapor pressure, leading to the formation of small vapor-filled cavities in the liquid. Since an airplane propeller doesn't cause the air around it to change from a liquid to a gas, cavitation isn't the correct word. An airplane propeller makes that sound because its blades are stalled. We've called it cavitation for years, but it's not really correct. As someone said, "A lie told once remains a lie, but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth."

    Jon , You are rite about the retracks , the struts are mostly plastic , they can be broken , easly , Been there , Done that , I had issues with the inner gear doors with mine , not clearing the tires , an not fulling closing , No RENO Speed runs !! I used an 5000 , an " doctored the lower part of the hatch , so I could move it rearward a little more , made a difference !1 It would slow for landing , with no flap's needed , wit the prop mod , had an upline of 400 hundred plus feet , slam it an go !! so many guys saw that , I sold it , an made some money !! How about that !

    Learning all kinds of tricks from you lately! 😜 I've had this one for 6 years, initially everyone was flying it on an >800 gr 6000 mah, which you can imagine added to it's under powering, so eventually tried a 4000 and it flew much better without much time loss. Then went to Danny's standard 5300 at 684gr and it flew nice. Haven't thought to try the HiV 4400 (didn't think it needed the higher C like an EDF and the HiV 5300 is 730gr and didn't want more weight), but after seeing this video, next time out I'll try the HiV 4400 which weighs the same as his standard 4500 did.
    If you know offhand, where are you balanced, I'm at 125mm, maybe too nose heavy, but with tail dragging prop warbirds, I tend to be closer to manual recommendations, unlike EDF's where I like it 15-40mm further aft. The FW 1600mm Corsair and Spitty are over powered and need the extra nose weight so an SMC 6200 works perfect and gives flight times over 10-12 minutes, but I'm sure you're better at throttle management than me. 😤 The Corsair with exaggerated landing flaps needs to be landed at 45% throttle, similar to this P-51. The Spitfire is lighter and lands at 32% throttle. I also have a sound system in all of them and the Merlin really makes the P-51 sound great. 👍 Gotta check out your other videos as well.

    Updated: The manual I originally found had the wrong motor and prop listed. I have corrected the specs and re-run the numbers in eCalc..
    According to the manual, it weighs about 9 lbs. With a wing area of 808 sq-in, the wing loading is about 26 oz/sq-in which isn’t too bad. eCalc says that the stock FMS 5060-360KV motor in the V2 version can handle the 17x9 prop and will give a level flight speed of 62 mph, a power-to-weight ratio of 208 watts/lb, and a thrust-to-weight ratio of 1.82:1. It should climb great, but won't be terribly fast. If I increase the KV to 450 using the custom setting, eCalc says I'd have to decrease the prop diameter to 14" to keep from burning the motor up. Just for fun, I set the battery to 8S and eCalc said I had to decrease the prop diameter to 13" to keep the stock motor and ESC from burning up. A higher KV motor would help the speed, but will need to be larger and require a heavier, higher capacity battery to keep from shortening the flight time with the stock 17x9 prop. I think I'd leave it alone and enjoy it. It's way better than the FlightLine 1410mm P-51D I bought a few years ago..

    • @sgcdialler
      @sgcdialler Před rokem +1

      I’m not sure why they list a 10x8 prop in the manual, because that’s patently wrong. The prop this model uses is a 17x9, but as you’ve asserted, the problem really is the motor. At 300Kv, it would be much better on 8S, assuming the motor can handle the wattage. Otherwise, a higher Kv motor (in the 500-600 range) would be a significant improvement.

    • @txkflier
      @txkflier Před rokem

      @@sgcdialler Yep, I’m seeing 17x9 at various websites. I’ll redo my calculations. A 500-600 KV motor would have to be a larger size to turn a 17x9. I think a 400-450 KV would be more reasonable.

    Personally for me, and in my own opinion from experience, the 1400mm to 1500mm warbirds are much better all around birds to own, transport, and fly. I've owned and still fly the V7 FMS P51 1450mm Mustang, and all I've done is upgrade the 4s esc and motor to modern standards since it was underpowered from the factory as well. Also, many of the guys I fly with rant and rave over the Eflite 1.3m P51, and I can pretty much agree since I've got the same size Eflite F4U Corsair, but my two favorite and most stunning warbirds that I own and garner the most most attention at the field, are my Eflite 1.5m Folke Wolfe and FMS 1.5m P47 Razorback.

    Its funny how the old warbirds feel heavier. I did the same thing with the eflite fw190. Thought it was really heavy when i picked it up and was surprised it was only 8 pounds with battery. I was guessing 15😅. Those strong tendacies for ground looping are why i dont fly my taildragger war birds much. Been too impatient to get that nailed down and just bring out the jets😂. Im inspired though to give it a real go to master that p factor ground looping.

      There's always benefits to having a gyro that's properly configured. Turbulence-related instability can be significantly alleviated with a gyro keeping the model stable and tracking like a full scale aircraft. While bigger does fly better, it also doesn't hurt to have the plane automatically correct for turbulence.

And it doesn't hurt that it takes an hour to get them ready. Thing is begging for a sound system! For more power you can probably change the prop out. I've had great luck just with simple prop swaps after running ecalc. If 18x12 clears you get 230oz thrust on a 2 blade with 72mph vpitch.
