Thank you for posting this. My grandfather was the son of a Creek woman and Choctaw man. he married Irish and so did my mother. I cherish the memories of hearing my Great Grandmother and my Grandfather speaking Mvskoke in private when they didn't know I was listening. It was usually when taking about presents for me at Birthdays or Christmas, so was it was fun and so interesting. My Great Grandmother spoke to him in Mvskoke when he got in trouble too! But I am scared to repeat any of that!
I asked my Grandfather to teach me and he would not have any part of that. They were some that escaped relocation and he told me to never let them know my heritage and learning the language would only get me in trouble one day. That is what he was taught as a child it seems and was able to live in West Alabama his entire life.
I did visit the local reservation but many were concerned about my motives it seemed. They were past bingo and pre casino and recently they had many visitors there just looking to prove some affiliation and get some claim to resources. I just wanted to hear Mvskoke again. Or try to learn it myself which is very hard with no speakers left in my family.
I did go to the Miccosukee reservation once and was caught listening to two women speaking. I was enjoying it so much but could not understand much at all, but may have upset or embarrassed them because they stopped and left the store when they thought I understood them.
I understand their concerns and respect them. Seems I look very much like my grandfather but have Anglo eyes. I just enjoyed being around people like my grandparents. I really don't fit in this culture well, totally different values but more like my grandfather.
Seems they were very through in hiding and there are no records to help me prove my ancestry.
But fifty years later and here in youtube I can hear the words again and have enjoyed your singing hymns very much!. Wish I knew how to say thank you properly.
Mvto is the way you say Thank You in Mvskoke (Creek). pronounced like muh-doe.
Leeanna Mae Thank you so much!
We were not allowed to learn the language when he was still here. I asked him many times and he just said "It would only get me in trouble". His parents taught him that since he was one of the few that Tried to Blend and keep a low profile his entire life. A few weeks before he died we had a long talk about some things for the first time. He told me that when he was my age, Children would be separated from their parents if caught "Acting Indian" and they would go to special schools for that.
It is so hard to learn a language with no one to practice with here. Most I've heard was not Eastern Mvskoke and did not sound a pretty as what they spoke when I met some Western speakers. I was on the Miccosukee Reservation in a store once and heard some very close to what they spoke,. but they stopped speaking it when they realized I was listening so closely. I can pass on some reservations if I keep my sunglasses on and don't stand up.
In Cherokee, North Carolina, Some of the older members approached me and asked me if I was Creek. It was nice they notices and they were very nice. They encouraged me to learn more about my heritage. Choctaws notice it too but only the older ones. All say the same thing. I'm taller than most Creek and have the screwed up eyes LOL.
For many of us in the SE we hid or assimilated to survive and for those of us who are descendents of many generations of “half-breeds” and misfits, it can be hard to find a place.
Thank you so much for sharing your life with me. I will be thinking about it for awhile to come.
Thank you so much for sharing this info I am also Muskogee Indian and I’m also interested in learning much more about our original language much love to all of my brothers and sisters 🕉☸️✡️
Very powerful songs….I can’t help but cry every time i hear these songs

Reminds me of my dad's voice...
Praise YAHWEH and yahshua messiah
I am so grateful you've shared this recording of "Heleluyan". I am in a class called "Worship Leadership in the Church" at a seminary in Kentucky and wanted to listen to some examples of Alleluias. This is beautiful. Praise God!
Love this song
I remember time dad his John Harjo was tech me how to sing this song
I have harjos in my family, my grandfather was creek muskogee he helped built a church thoplocco
As a descendant of Mvskoke from Creek Stand, Alabama, I am pleased to hear Creek people singing in the Mvskoke language. Most English-speakers who perform this hymn do not know how to pronounce Heleluyan [heh lay LOH yahn] much less how to say the other Mvskoke words in this hymn.
I'm trying to reconnect with my culture and the songs are amazing
Same here brother same here
I m a Creek from Musckogee and Tulsa oklahoma, I am glad we have a God that Loves us that saves and forgives us .

We lead worship in a different churches and other places as well. The base language we work in is English.I am writing you to find out if you know what the words for this song would translate to in English. I don't know if I can get back to this you tube channel so i will give you my e mail address to write back. It is kevi_calcote@sil.org . Thanks for your help. I liked this song a lot. I only heard it for the first time today.
Kevin Calcote- was you able to get that translation?
I would be interested to know the words to this song in English, also! I think my great-grandfather was Choctaw, Silas Tandy Walker. He was my mother's mother's daddy. My mother, Nancy Doris Alison; my grandmother, Lula Mae Walker; my great-grandfather, STW. Loved hearing this hymn.

Hello! I’m of Creek descent in Alabama. I’m so glad I found this….it’s very inspirational!
I’m trying to gather material to learn the Muskogee language. Any help or suggestions on where to find this material would greatly be appreciated. Mudo!

christianity and Creek dont mix. Choctaws hell they mix up just fine lol
Balance D - your trippin. Are you Creek or Choctaw?
@marilynberryhillmb, you will not understand unless The Lord Jesus Christ is your Savior. Without that provision in you life, you are spiritually dead, and there is nothing within you that gives you understanding of spiritual matters. John 3:16 and Romans 10:9-10, 12. By the way, I am Creek and Kiowa with a tiny bit of Cheyenne.
christian is a lable, praise by the peoples is praise after all
Actually Christianity doesnt mix with anything wicked. Darkness was in them and they could not see the light. Now those who have ears to hear let them hear, God spirit is not limited by words of dont mix together. You have no understanding of spiritual matters when you havent been enlightened. Its like trying to tell a 2 years old how to drive a car when they have no idea what a car is nor have never seen one. Okay little grasshopper?.....
Hallelujah??? Lol yeah right that must be a white Indian hymn
Amen we need more hymns on here to listen to reminds me of my parents who are now deceased
Never wait for our people to cheris by then is too late find out about your native heritage now
I think your awesome
Stay. That way the creator will bless you and your parents are very pleased what they left a wonderfully angel too pass it on God bless u
