  • Another one of our stops during our Colorado tour is the Georgetown Loop Railroad. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a 4.5 mile long line between the Devil’s Gate depot in Georgetown to Silver Plume and is about an hour west of Denver. During our visit to the Georgetown Loop was being pulled by steam locomotive no. 111. 111 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the International Railway of Central America in Guatemala. 111 returned to the United States in 1973 and sat on display at the Sundown & Southern Railroad in Hudson, Colorado. It was auctioned off in 2002 to sit on display at the Highland Railroad Park in Breckinridge, Colorado. The Georgetown Loop Railroad purchased 111 in 2008 to restore 111 to operation, the restoration began in 2013 and was completed in 2016 and 111 has been pulling passenger trains on the Georgetown Loop ever since. What makes the Georgetown Loop Railroad unique is when the line was being constructed as the Georgetown, Breckinridge, and Leadville Railroad in the late 1870s and early 1880s it was clear that the gradient was too steep to get from Georgetown to Silver Plume so the solution was have the railroad loop over itself to makes the grades less steeper. This makes the Georgetown Loop unique because it is one of very few railroads in the world that goes over the same tracks it started on several minutes prior. Listen 111 to battle the steep 3% grade from Georgetown to Silver Plume. It maybe a short ride but it had a lot of interesting railroad history and some must see break taking scenery through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
