    1/3 of the White folk in Australia, ( the ones wth UK ancestors ) ,are IRish. We are inter married even Catholic and Protestant married together. We even have a memorial to Wolfe Tone in a Cemetery built not long after that rebellion. The reason that there was no conscription in WW1 WAs due to the influence of ythe Irish Cardinal of Melbourne who was upset with the Dublin uprising and strongly lobbied against the referendum on the matter failing. We the Australian, 4th & 5th Generation have often lost our specific background from thyhe UK& Ireland... but it is an important part of our history

    I loved this. I'm from Boston which is where you'll probably find one the most proud Irish communities in the world outside of the country itself. I'm technically only half Irish but my mother's side was the side I was raised in most in terms of things like culture and tradition.
    I've always been curious as to how Native Irish view the Irish Communities of America. In America, since everyone's family was at some point an immigrant (excluding of course Native Americans), we all closely identify with our cultural backgrounds. If someone asked me "What are you?" I would reply with "Irish". Europeans are likely ethnically linked to their Nationality but in America, everyone's American, but not everyone is culturally Native American. When we say we're "Irish" here it's implied that we mean "Irish-American". I've noticed that Native Irishman get slightly annoyed because they don't understand this concept so I thought I might ask your thoughts.
    On this side of the pond, in Massachusetts especially, there's a huge sense of Irish Pride and since we have the larger St. Patty's Celebration in the world outside of Ireland and the highest percentage of culturally Irish people in the country, everyone else knows how deeply our Irish Pride runs.

    • @JohnDRuddyMannyMan
      @JohnDRuddyMannyMan  Před 7 lety +6

      To be honest, I think the annoyance comes from the image often associated with Ireland amongst some irish-Americans. The idea of green fields and fiddley-i music and a life equatable to hobbits. I would always urge any irish-american to come over here and really see the place! Yes we have the stereotypes but have more. I've been to Boston and I loved it! I'd love to return now that I know a lot more of its History.
      Don't get me wrong, I love the irish American connection. I love that an Irishman designed the White House. I love that so many U.S. presidents have irish heritage. I have so many relatives in America, some who have moved over themselves from Ireland, others who are third, maybe fourth generation and we share the same great great great grandparents!
      It's good that you're finding out more about irish history! I've written a book on this very subject you should check out!
      Thanks for watching!! :)
