You got to be the best all around mechanic and fabricator I've ever seen
Back in the day, heater cores were accessible behind a couple of clips either under the dash, or under the hood. What on gods earth were the engineers smoking who thought it was a good idea to put it behind the dash so you had to tear it completely apart to get to it. Sometimes insanity prevails.
They were smoking the good stuff 🤣
This is standard procedure for pretty much all modern cars.
It's not "back in the day", its depending on make and model. A 63 Fairlane is a PITA when compared to a '95 Chevy p/u. Now this Jetta, yeah they kind of suck.
This makes me want to sell my jetta.
it heavily prevails. that is such a idiot design. I might be looking at this soon but on the other hand would rather sell it and buy something else.
Thank you for this video. Fast to the point. Exactly what I needed to see.
Me: Hey Volkswagen, I need to pay for a heater core replacement.
Volkswagen: It's totaled
After watching you take the whole dash out, I believe that I would just drive the car in the summer ! Lol! Is there anything that you will not tear into?
I'm right there with you. In fact, I'd rather change the clutch again than do that little shit show just to change the dern heater core! wow, no thanks!
Might be a good idea to pressure test or replace the cooling system cap, could be the system is over-pressurized and popped the heater core.
This looks like a total pain to change the core. To bad you didn't show removing the heater box in real time. Great video as always.
After seeing this I can guarantee you that is one car I would never have. What an engineering cluster. But, you rock for taking on the task!👍
It's the best car on the planet, in my opinion (TDI, that is). It's worth enduring the ridiculous proceedure required to replace the heater core. The rest of the car seems to last forever.
All modern vehicles are similar to this, unfortunately.
Austin your the shit dont stop these videos man thanks again
Havnot seen the old girl in a while now , still a beast
Great job! Do you have any idea what this replacement would cost at the VW shop?
I’m tired and my fingers hurt just watching you!
Wow thats all I can say. I started watching your brother and I must say you are 2 very different people lol. Keep up the great work 👍.
Hi there, I recently purchased the same boost gauge as yours, what way did you wire it up and where on the bulkhead/firewall did you route the pipe for boost? Cheers 👍
Nice work man But I do not envy you with this job. I had that exact same Jetta TDI with the black and black leather interior. I loved that car and this was a job I thought I would have to do at some point but luckily not. Keep up the good work bro
Excellent video. 10:31. FYI, that noise is the starter motor. It's repairable, but you have to dismantle the starter.
Putting in that airbag the way he was moved over like that … someone has some PTSD from airbags for sure 😂
Lol, that starter noise. I let mine go for a while and felt bad about scaring people when it'd start near them. Replaced my starter and the first one from Pure Energy had a bad solenoid, kept getting stuck on. So I sent it back, got a Bosch reman unit. That one failed in relatively short order, so warrantied it. Finally been good since. Might've been better off sticking with my original noisy starter.
What's your exhaust system? I want that sound on my tdi.
Hello about the blend doors, if you fix it,can you tell me please the brand of the tape or the type and if you are satisfied???I have the same problem and i dont know what is better to use to stay longer.
Thank you.
If I do this, approximately how many hours am I looking at? I have experience with the alh, done timing belt, clutch and fuel pump seals to name a few, so I'm not a noob, but still an amateur who will probably break a few pieces in the process.
thanks great video
And I thought changing the heater core on my 2001 Ram was bad, wowsers!!
Austin, check the alternator clutch pulley. From the noise the motor makes it sounds like it's stuck.
What a PITA to change a heater core!
Would want to do such job.
Great job and video! Question: when you did the blend doors before, was there improvement on the amount of air coming out the desired vents? I am guessing that since the foam on the doors disappears over time, the air from the blower basically goes everywhere. So once the doors are re-foamed, is the air directed more efficiently to the vents you want air to come out of? Thanks for the video again!
Hello did you fix because i have the same problem and u don't know what to use
@@tomilaw7996 Yes i did. I used this other video as a guide. czcams.com/video/n6GHmzr7uAI/video.html
Air is routed much better. I found that the air box behind de radio area was not installed properly from when the heater core was changed out. I used new foam tape for all the mating surfaces of the vents and the air box. On the blend doors I used HVAC tape. Use a kid or someone with smaller hands to do the door in the back of the air box. Hope this helps.
@@SteveFloresCoach thank you
Austin how do you organize the parts you take off? Do you lay them out in a certain way. Great video as always!
I just throw them in the trunk and reassemble as a puzzle haha
@@austinniemela lol of course
What clips? I cannot find them? I'm lost and don't have a way to evacuate the AC Lines
Damn! Gonna by the dorman bypass kit now Lol.
Since I bought the car about 10 or so years ago, I put off doing the blend door foam. Then the ac evaporator went out about 4 years ago. Even though I live near the south coast, I put off doing the evaporator. Then finally, this winter, my heater core started leaking. Condensation on cold mornings freezing on the interior of the windshield, making it really difficult and dangerous to drive has me thinking I will just bypass the heater and wait till the summer to fix it. 😆. I really like the car. Just did the t-belt service 16k ago. But the turbo is leaking, the dmf is rattling and I could probably tighten up the front end again. Now, I'm not sure if I should fix it, or turn it into a project car and get something else.
yeah my blend door foam is shooting out of my side defrosters and all last summer I couldnt drive more than 30 minutes before the inside of the windshield comepleted got covered in condensation, glad I finally did the bypass@@simplestatic
I Watch your videos from Cancún.
Am Very impresive with your channel
Ever come to Cancún let me know man. I ll be happy to show you around.
I would literally hang out that engineer who think that was a good idea to design heater core that way.
If you're having trouble keeping up, you can slow down the video speed. If you're on a cell phone it should be in the top right corner of the video under settings. You'll look for playback speed and click that, then change it to the speed you want.
Good video but that's a lot of work and patients wow wow I believe I'm just gonna put a coupler on the end of mine is Pipe has snapped but the heater court is intact
And he says this is lot easier than first time,ok then.👍👍😎😎
I did the same process but now I'm getting imobilizer activated error
Nice vídeo, you problem of leak un heater core are to use a poor ir bad coolant. Use g12 vw official, this is not corrossive for aluminium pipes
Man when I did my heater core on the old 2slow I lost my dash lights so I said forget it and just put a light in my dash
how does one know their heating core leaking?
You'll start to smell it when your heat is on and your inside windows will start to "fog" up with residue from the leak. Worst case it will fail and there'll be hot liquid on the floor.
So obviously this is your second go around, but what are those few extra parts that you wish you had or wish you would’ve replaced after you put it together the first time like extra certain types of clips or gaskets cuz Jetta’s known to blow the forbidden snow. Haha
My dash would rattle like it was full of marbles if I did that! lol
Support Rumble!
He says well guys that wasn't too bad LOL bullshit I'm glad I drive a 94 Ford ranger XLT four-wheel drive 300,000 mi on it I've had to replace the core three times I just opened up my glove box drop it down take out four bolts take off the hoses then do it in reverse.
👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽
All the screws and small parts. I wouldn’t be able to get it back in lol
Is your brother Devon ?
how long did it take you to do this job?
can you do that to my car please
Not too bad a job??? Holy crap, you had to tare The Whole dash apart. Wow!
this is the same repair on pretty much all modern cars unfortunately.
Never a fun job doing the core. Just did mine
I´ll guess i will have to bypass that HC, fu.. too lazy for that diy.
Damn. If the heater core in my truck fails, I'm not sure I WANT to take the whole damned thing apart just to fix it. :|
1😁
Pronounced "Molly"/Meyle
And now we know why you put it off for so long. If your going to bury something that deep in the car. The VW engineers could have made it bullet proof. Me, one day to take it apart and replace core. 10 days to remember how to get it back together.
For real!!
Yikes
What a rats nest.
German engineering!!!
Screw that!! No German cars for me ever again!! Lolol.
