      chris o o now right? It's that 60s kind for cute tune and the way she emphasise it - Bette can't really sing but that's what I love about it. Also the way she's swinging her skirt so sweetly just having fun at the end! So good! She cracks me up!

      Denise Spurlock She was the one who was the breakthrough with the age barrier actress and proved that an actress only gets better with age. She was tough and hard as nails and had a sense of humor and a bigger heart than people have given her credit for. Hell, you had to be very strong and tough in those days in Hollywood if you were to survive. She may have had her quirks about her but it isn't like she didn't have a reason to have them. It's such a shame about B.D. and her. Regardless of what B.D. has said, she did love her mother but B.D. never had to raise a child alone and go up against the Big Boys of Hollywood and I doubt she really ever had to fight for very much.
      Her and Joan Crawford could have had a great friendship, I think, if the studios had not turned them against each other. They seemed to do that with the women more than the men, I guess they got a kick out of it or something.

    • @ScottLoyed
      @ScottLoyed Před 7 lety +11

      Absolutely correct. When other actresses of her generation ages they fought it tooth and nail and more or less became actual "Baby Janes." She moved on to roles that fit her age and worked almost until the day she died

      I agree with Shannon R. Both of these women were born Aries. That’s about 1 of the toughest signs out there. Ask ANYONE who deals with an Aries. Plus, they may not have been the most beautiful women of their day but in their younger years, believe me, they had their suitors! Being Soo Famous and good looking in your youth makes it triple hard to come down to earth and realize it’s all gone...the attention, the admiration of both men and women and what was so important in life has left you. Think what an impact that has on a psyche. How far that is to fall and do it in the public eye. I personally LOVED watching these women! Through the books, the tv smears, all of it. They were honestly trying to do their best. Because we can scorn Hollywood but look who rules the wave! If it wasn’t for the “Hollywood Hype” and the Hetta Hoppers of the world, oh and let’s NOT forget the money machines: Goldwyn, Meyer, and his Pals, they might have died happy. Or maybe felt some dignity to age.

      Lisa Murphy being born in a certain month has absolutely ZERO to do with your personality. It has to do with childhood, how you are brought up, the difficulties that happen in your formative phases, and what you learn as an adolescent. The fact that in 2018 some people still think the superstitious nonsense is ridiculous.

    I love this little song by Bette! I am amazed at the great sense of humor she had right up to the end of her life. Watching the interviews from the 80's with David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Joan Rivers, Bette was really funny, spot on and I believe very beautiful still

    when the movie came out, Bette toured the country, appearing in theatres even in very small towns and they would have a competition among people in the audience who would find a baby Jane doll hidden under a certain seat! :)
    Bette while always being a GUTSY lady was a good sport.

    This song was a clever marketing tool for "What ever happened to Baby Jane " which oddly enough had mixed reviews in the early 60s. Both Bette and Joan delivered epic performances, but Bette was better at the end of the day.

    What a trooper! She did what she had to do to put food on the table and a Lucky Strike between her fingers! As my brilliant niece said, only BD could sing with such bored remove and apathy and still get fulsome, authentic applause. I love both she and Joan Crawford, both exemplars of courage, perseverance and true grit, as this video displays. It isn’t even sad, as I had at first thought. It is yet another BD triumph!

    Bette Davis made a record in 1976, including the song "I've Written a Letter to Daddy' (sung both as 'Baby Jane' and then continuing as Miss Davis). It was put out on CD (I bought it for the sheer 'camp' value of it). When the album was released, Miss Davis signed copies for hundreds of people lined up around the block.

    THIS IS GREAT! Why the hell didn't they use this in the movie? They only used the instrumental tracks. Composer Frank DeVol concocts a memorably cheesy pastiche of nearly every Top 40 rock song circa 1961. Every time I hear it I grow extremely nostalgic for my early childhood when all of the songs coming out of my mom's radio sounded just like this. And to have Bette Davis herself singing the vocals is sheer genius. This should have been a hit.

    1962,"long before color, right"? God, some people are so ignorant! Color programming came into the mainstream in the 50's though it would be another 10 years before it was prominent over B & W. Still some notable mainstays in vibrant color were Disney, Bonanza, Lucy. This video is a testament to Davis' ability to not take herself so seriously like Crawford. Even when Bette weighed 90 pounds and near death, she kept on going with sheer determination, she was a force of nature with unending energy. The comments make me lol. Bette would crack up.

Even the best of the drag queens, Charles Pierce, was not looked upon fondly by Bette. Why? He couldn't empathise with her as Sarandon (or any woman in the business) could, and resulted to portrating a hollow caricature of the woman. But hey, that's drag.

If drag in its entirety is about parodying and satirising female performers, why would a drag performer have been better suited for the role than Sarandon? And as for transphobia; I don't think the trans community would be particularly thrilled with your conflating them as whole with drag.
