    Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most-hated audio audio tools. There are electronic musical instruments that are praised for their versatility: classic analogs showing up in almost every genre, the DX7 covering all bases from 80s cheese to industrial filth and what would music be without the seemingly unlimited catalog of modular fart sounds.
    Today we are going to talk about Quasimidi Technox. The sole and only purpose of this German synthesizer from the heydays of actually making money with electronic music is very, very clear: showing up on Bad Gear 30 years later and giving me yet another excuse to annoy you with a truckload of half-finished meme techno.

I keep an old midi controler around (Evolution brand) for just this reason. - Oh, slightly related fact - one of the main guys behind the Evolution midi controllers, M-Audio ones, M-Audio Venom and novation controllers started the PWM company so the Malevolent and Mantis synths are from that same lines of... @Sycokay Před 21 dnem +9

      I met the two German guys who ran Quasimidi the same day I met Doctor Bob. They were also enjoying a synth-free vino-lubricated conversation at the opening of a synth museum in London.
      They were nice enough guys, and they didn't mind admitting that they preferred the Rave-o-lution, musically and fiscally, because of the user interface, and the expansion options, which placed the unexpanded basic model in the right price bracket to make a small profit in a crowded groovebox market, then add fat margins on the expansions.
      Yay for pragmatism.

Had a great afternoon playing around with it, having fun with how good it does THOSE sounds, just as you demonstrated. And ever since, whenever I work on tracks I'm too lazy to bother with all the effort that goes into using this thing. :D When there's plenty other machines or vstis around that are so much simpler to use. But one day it'll find a way into a track... maybe now that it's got the Bad Gear Seal of Approval!

    I sold mine recently and it went for 275. Went to Croydon so maybe the grime guys like them. The samples always sounded rough, part of its charm. Years ago I sold it and thisnguy accused me of trying to kill him cos it made a mild pop when it turned on. He was obsessed that I'd put a non standard screw in it which wasn't true. He also kept refusing to take it apart even though I never asked him. He ended up having to pay to send it back after 2 weeks of emailing me daily. Memories

    I had one too. Used it in a wider set up which included an Akai S3000, Juno 106, Korg M1 and an Alesis SR16 drum machine. All run via an Atari 1040. The Quasimidi provided the edgy / cheesy element. Still got the S3000, but everything else is long gone. My favourite part of the Technox user manual was the incredibly poor translation to English. It also said something like '...so you can sound like all the other guys, with their baseball caps.' Or words to that effect. Happy times :-)

    II borrowed this unit from a colleague for week + test. It's have some famous rave/trance presets and nice features but overall it is too lo-fi for my taste. Oh Florian from global DJs also known as DJ Taylor & Flow. They was amazing in late 90s early 2000s. By the way Scooter had Qusimidi Raven that is as far as I know is Technox + Raveolution on steroids and with the keyboard.

    That hi-hat sounds great! Found them for over $600 delivered in the US. Frankly, I'm waiting for some new Behringer clones for my rack space for about half the price. Sure they require 2 rack spaces, but the rack can be just 1/4 as deep.

    I still have the lovely blue Quasimidi Raven , instant track making synth were it already has pre programmed sequences/grooves to inspire.
    Also i think it was used by jm Jarre and Klaus shultze but then again they owned and played just about every synth created. LOL

    What a fun little box. Enjoyed this one :) Along similar lines and you'd probably enjoy it for the channel is Akai's SG01v - They had three little half rack units with LED display, three parameters per sound, little romplers. There was the SG01p piano, SG01k (k means GM, dunno why they didn't call is G) and the ultimate - the SG01v, V is for vintage. It's full of vintage synth sounds. Fun little box released at a time not far from when Jupiters were cheap and unwanted, and people didn't want vintage synth sounds. :)

    I have an E-Mu Vintage Keys "rompler" that has a similar looking workflow. These sorts of things are good collections of the eras, but are really just good sound banks with some synthy features baked in and a bit thin on sound despite style. You made it sound great though, of course!

  • @arcadely
    @arcadely Před 18 dny +1

    All right, time for a more serious comment. With this one, honestly, I feel like - and especially back in the day - it's a great tool for getting a job done. You literally could do the entire soundtrack for a PS1 game, particularly a PS1 racing game, on this thing, and you could honestly get away with this and nothing else quite far into the PS2 era... and perhaps a bit beyond. Listen to some of Namco's early Wangan Midnight soundtracks to see what I mean. Same with Unreal Tournament 99: a bunch of that stuff could have been done quite credibly on this. I really like it, and I really like what you did with it. Definitely hits a certain nostalgia spot for me, and hard. Realistically, I heard a lot more of this kind of music on video games, CD, and certain TV shows and films, than I ever did in clubs, because I just couldn't afford to go to clubs for the most part, but this is still very much of its era, and sounds great.

    Great video that catapulted me straight back to the beginnings of my sound design! Thanks for this feeling :-)
    Quasimidi was an interesting company back then. As well as the Technox, I also had the Quasar (including the T. R. E. module) and the Cyber 6. There are also pictures of them on my website. I also programmed sound sets for the Technox and Quasar. You could get a lot of useful patches out of both boxes. Just listen to the demos on my site. The good old days :-)
