- After the death of his mother and uncle the boy Aegon iii found himself king of westeros. But he was far from a normal child having seen much trauma and loss during the dance of the dragons which would leave Aegon iii a depressed, solom and broken boy and later man.
The Dance Of The Dragons will be the focus of the plot of the new HBO spin-off House Of The Dragon coming in 2022. So if you want to learn the story before we see HBO's take on it then this will be a very long-running series. Game Of Thrones / House of the dragon are HBO shows based on George R R Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series. The information in this video comes from the books a world of ice and fire as well as fire and blood.

Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen was trapped on Dragonstone by her brother King Aegon ii with no way to escape her fate. What was to come was the final showdown between the two main players of the dance of the dragons and bring the war into its final phase. The House of the dragon was crumbling and the events that was about to follow would only cause more damage to both sides of the war.

I think Aegon iii is the representation that in the end the Dance of Dragons was pointless since out of all the people and family members ready to murder each other for the throne, it’s the child suffering from severe depression and PTSD who never wanted it who had it forced upon him. I just…I just feel so bad for him.
He wasn't winner, he was victim of war. But he was quite strong that he didn't lost his mind afrer Rhaenyra's death
Viserys Targaryen is the reason for the fall of the Targaryen Dynasty. Betrothed Rhaenyra to Daemon and have their first born inherit the throne OR marry Leana Valeryon and unite the 2 strongest houses from old Valyria. Lose ZERO dragons and remain super power. Who knows how the long night ends against 40-50 dragons and a United Westeros. Hindsight for sure lol.
Long-ass reply, feel free to criticize.
I think he has responsibility for it, but most of it comes from his telling queen Alicent about Aegons dream while delirious. While her father did plan to overthrow the heir without her, I think her role in telling Aegon his father wanted him king made him want the throne for the first time. And she would rage against her father's plan and break it. She was 100% for Rhaenyra becoming queen after that dinner, at least until she heard Viserys's opium trip story. She loved her king and wanted what he wanted.
The kingdom can be stupid and stubborn and petty, but the Targaryens didn't get their throne by following the rules, and they kept it by making compromises and nation building, a queen ruling this one time isn't a huge deal. The people would endure a queens rule and get used to it just like Aegon marrying both his sisters, naming bastards lords and giving them titles and houses, just like all the other unusual things the Targaryens did, and they'd forget about it soon enough just like they did for Cercei. The difference between Cerceis rule and rhaenyras is cercei wasn't loved, and the people swore fealty to Rhenyra willingly, which makes her even more likely to be accepted.
The lords have the capacity to be honorable if you let them, but I think it all truly starts with Alicent being told a half truth from a delirious man.
I think the Dance of the Dragons is still inevitable even it did not happen in Rhaenyra's timeline and should that happen it would be much more worse than the Dance that we knew because by that time either before or after the Long Night there will be more than 60-70 Dragons duking out each other across Westeros which would a big no no both to the Nobles and Small Folk.
@@konankunoichi94 he never actually told her that only in the show did he
The heirs of houses Lannister, baratheon, arryn, royce, blackwood, valeryon, stark, tyrell, strong, etc etc arriving on dragon back at the wall. Cue avengers portals music.
Completely concur. Viserys destroyed his family.
Aegon III is the only one I really felt bad for in The Dance. He was just an innocent child, in the midst of war. He was already depressed and traumatized by Viserys II being left behind, to the point his mother kept him by her side at all times. He was her cupbearer so that he was never out of her sight again, only for her to be betrayed and then forced to watch his mother be eaten by a dragon. Its no wonder he hates dragons growing up.
I love that Cregan Stark basically had to convince him to take the Iron Throne. He didn't want it and actually told Stark to take it, but Cregan knew that war would never end unless he took the Iron throne. The lesser houses would continue fighting and more would die fighting to take the throne. The only thing that made him happy was his little Brother's return from The Free Cities, it's said it was the first time people saw the young Prince smile again. Visery's basically runs the Kingdom from there, while Aegon's two sons set everything bad up for Aegon The Unworthy to completely destroy the Targaryen dynasty.
Honestly, I just want to hug him.
Technically he did have a short genuine smile when he first saw Daenaera Velaryon but yeah. Seeing his brother again was the first time he actually become happy for a longer period of time again
Felt bad for Halaena too, especially with what they're doing with the series. She suffered the most, and she doesn't even take part in it. All because her mother effed it up.
@@khalduras784 he was also apparently overjoyed to find his brother after his years long disappearance. I’d be surprised if this wasn’t the source of some kind of in-universe holiday or festival as not only was a prince recovered, Aegon actually felt genuine joy that he was able to express which has to be some kind of scientific achievement
I feel pretty bad for Daeron for the same reason... He was just a kid doing his duty to his family and he had to witness the worst parts of men at Tumbleton before being slain himself in the chaos.
He and his brother saved the house targaryen, underrated kings
It’s true Aegon ll only had a daughter at that point correct
@@nicholash1691yes and if he made her future queen he would be a hypocritical bastard and would have to admit rhaeynera was the actual rightful heir not him and he would be known as a usurper. Since he was to crippled he couldn’t have any more heirs so that only left one choice who he was literally about to mutilate aegon the younger that’s when larys and coryls stepped in and poisoned him since at this point everyone wanted aegon the younger on the throne not him.
Considering that at the time he was king, about 1/4 of his life was filled by war and death to those close to him, there’s little likelihood he would turn out into anything else but gloomy
Could have turned into a killer psychopath actually.
Yeah he really didn't stand a chance imo, that kind of psychological damage in your formative years is extremely damaging
imagine if 1) he was not scared of dragons 2) Had Access to one 3) went a bit Maegor. The fact he ended up as just gloomy is a miracles in itself
A Targaryen king scared of Dragons… that really is sad. If only Aegon the conqueror saw what has become of his dynasty, especially at the end with Daenerys
Most dynasties self destruct at some point. I think Aegon hoped that his prophecy would keep his decedents in line
Aegon would've ressurected himself and killed Viserys for being a fool.
If my mother was bathed in flames and eaten alive in front of my eyes, I’d be pretty scared of Dragons too.
@@AaronGuest Problably not kill him most likely geld him when he gets the thought of marrying Alicent. "Your cock is not gonna fuck up my dynasty."
@@J10005 No. Marrying Alicent was actually a pretty good decision, what messed that up was him not acknowledging Aegon as his heir. House Targaryen was down to 3 members at that point, Rhaenyra who could've died when she first gave birth, and Daemon who wasn't making kids with his wife. House Targaryen needed more people in it, and men in particular to rule after Viserys died.
His story is so tragic. It makes me weep inside everytime I hear it.
Same but his whole fam story is tragic, it's never ending suffering...

Well, Jaeherys did rather well, to be fair
To make you feel better, remind yourself it's only fiction and nothing really happened.
Even if it takes one or two more seasons of HOTD, I’m prepared to get my soul crushed watching this poor kid.
He’s always been one of my favorites. I imagine he did have happiness with his wife, and his daughter Daena
Yes he must have cause both Daena and Elaena thought highly of him and was close to him. We don't know yet if he was close to Daeron, Baelor or Rhaena yet.
@@roguerodriguez8215 I believe he was close with his children. Considering those three had the best personality according to the wiki. Daeron was able to invade dorne without dragons and Baelor was beloved by so many people
@@eidokun Daena... Uhhmn
@@eidokun
Sadly, didn't Daeron fail?
@@thalmoragent9344 he managed to conquer Dorne but never quite got to hold it as the Dornish, led by their Princess fled from their castles and towns to hide in the desert and mountains and attack his armies wherever they went. His appointef governor was assasinated by scorpions. The Dornish passes were unsafe even for him, and he was ambushed several times. Dorne continued to bleed the other kingdoms dry over 2 years and Daeron the Young started to look a bit old.
He ended up falling for a trap, being killed at a peace negotiation. This brought his religious brother Baelor to power and even more craziness ensued, with Baelor braving a pit of snakes to rescue Prince Aemond Targaryen (no, not the mono eyed one) in the name of peace.
It took another two generations and another King Daeron to finally bring Dorne into the Seven Kingdoms, without using dragons or swords.
Having gone though extreme trauma its no wonder he was depressed and not wanting to be involved with the running of the Seven Kingdoms. Viserys did well ruling on his behalf (when he was Hand) but I wouldn't be supprised if it affected his mental health despite barely being King roughly a year after Aegon's sons.
That’s Daemons son. Imagine how papa would’ve felt if he saw his son scared of a dragon
As much as Daemon loves his family, he would’ve been furious to see his son being scared of dragons. Daemon took lots of pride is being dragon master.
If Daemon was alive, Aegon most likely would’ve never been afraid of dragons.
More like Aegon the Screwed-Over. Having super-charged depression AND super-charged PTSD means the deck is stacked against you, esp. if you have kingly duties to fulfill.
Daemon and Rhaenyra's son 🥺
Viserys and the greens are responsible for the war and House Targaryen losing its strength. Team Black won but lost at the same time. Aegon lll would never trust anyone on his small council with good reason because of Otto Hightower.
I hope we will get to see young Aegon and Viserys in the last season of the show.I really want to see how things changed and developed after the Dance of the dragons and handle these characters.🤔
This guy and Daeron II are my favorite kings in Lore because of the sheer adversity they had to go through and yet still with all the terrible things that befell them still did the best they could for their people no matter how terrible they were portrayed or slandered or all the people that tried to manipulate him.
Daeron the 2nd ? Is that daeron the good ? The One during the 1st blackfyre rebellion
@@Comet_373 yeah that's the guy
Don’t forget Jaehaerys, who was often considered the greatest king. He was basically a hostage of Maegor the cruel and his smothering mother after the death of his dad. He’s essentially a prototype of Sansa
All I got was massive depression from this. As if I didn't feel sorry for Aegon 3 already.
He didn't like dragons...but it's not true that he hated eggs or never entertained the idea..later in his reign, his brother Viserys was his Hand and he encouraged him to try to hatch dragon eggs with the help of mages (magic). The hatching failed.
It would be cool seeing what dragon Aegon and viserys would ride both there parents were great dragon riders quite a shame really…but could you imagine Aegon IV with a dragon that would be epic
So happy for him that he got Viserys back.
Damn....he really suffered from clinical depression and nothing could've helped him. Losing all his family in a matter of days and seeing his mother gruesome death and everyone expected him to be happy. That's tragic...to have that mindset where you can't stop thinking about your families death and even having nightmares. Jesus.....
and during his death was the mark of the dragons extinction. He hates dragons and dont want to repopulate them.
lost his brothers, his father, his mother, his best friend, his dragon.
That first illustration of Aegon III in this vid looks so much like his dad in the show.
He had the hard job of rebuilding after a destructive civil war. He did the best he could under hardships.
It’s crazy if visearys just named his brother demon heir then there wouldn’t have been any of this. Especially since he ended up with his daughter.
@Forfun62 - Or if had made Rhaenyra marry Daemon at the beginning since (he believed) they were screwing anyway;
OR
If he had put Aegon 2nd in front of Rhaenyra as heir from his birth as is customary in Westeros and was expected as was expected by everyone in Westeros;
OR
If he had put the matter up for a vote of the lords of the houses, like Jahaerys did.....
.... then none of this would have happened.
Viserys did the only thing that was almost certain to plung the country into a civil war. Furthermore, when Rhaenyra started spitting out kids that were obviously bastards which made it a guarantee that there would be a civil war Viserys did nothing.
It's almost as if the god of Westeros wanted a war to happen.
@@darriuscole8544 Grrm wanted a war
@@darriuscole8544 God or Gods i guess
Daemon would have been a tyrant who would have caused the kingdom wars as well Visearys should never have named Rhaenyra as heir and instead should have waited till Laena came of age and married her then had Rhaenyra marry Leanor and none of this would have happened.
@@darriuscole8544 Visearys felt backed into a corner especially after Deamon’s remark about his dead son he thought Deamon might try to take the throne he was desperate and chose Rhaenyra in case he died before he had a son. This is on Otto though he thought that Visearys would banish Deamon and that was it he didn’t think Visearys would name Rhaenyra heir if he’d have kept his mouth shut Rhaenyra would have been married off for political gain and be just another broodmare for the kingdom she served.
He had so much survivor guilt, poor thing 🥺
I truly feel sorry for him he did go through a lot 😔
I find it rather amusing how people relate and understand Aegon's madness because of what he went through, but Rhaenyra gets no simpathy even thought she saw way worse and with much more sense (since she was old enough to fully feel and understand all that happened to her sons and all the traitors.
Somehow she is a bad ruler and a psycopath...
I guess to some people she was just a terrible leader who couldn't rule and then their was the sexist stigma that not only followed her but every woman with a chance of power after her she is referenced constantly as the worst possible scenario.
Well tbf Aegon was a kid and didn't choose for any of this to happen, nothing he could do would change the outcome of his life he was literally forced down this route and was born into war basically
I sympathize with Rhaenyra A LOT. I think the reason people side with greens so much even though they are full of evil psychopaths are because of the actors. Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans and Ewan Mitchell are all charming (this could apply to why people love Tywin and Cersei Lannister while hating on Catelyn as well).
@@lewanbroski504 the greens started the war, the exact SAME thing can be said about Rhaenyra, she didn't draw first blood, she never usurped anyone's throne, it was hers to begin with. So your argument lacks foundation.
@@Nobody-su9km yeah but she wasn't born into war. She had options and things she could do to change the out comes although overall it wasn't her fault whereas Aegon the 3rd was a child who literally did nothing wrong except for being a kid

True, imagine ur mum eaten by a dragon in front of u
This makes me feel horrible and terrible
I don't think so I will be able to watch that scene
Jahaerys I is truly the last well-beloved king. Viserys was a good man but lacked the political fortitude to reign in Otto Hightower. The dynasty truly would have been different if Otto was replaced with Daemon, or was never Hand at all. Aegon II was needlessly cruel, perverse, demented, and power-hungry. Rhaenyra's soul was corrupted by the war even though she started out as a flawed but competent princess. Aegon III was the personification of depression - justifiably so. Viserys II did the best he could to keep Aegon III, Daeron I, and Baelor from tearing the realm apart again. After Viserys II died, the Seven Kingdoms never truly recovered.
Aegon III was not a bad king, but the dude seems like he was about 1 step away from suicide. He probably would have killed himself if the fate of Westeros didn't depend on him being king.
Well said, if we think about it then true kings died at this point in the face of Viserys II. Both Aegon and Viserys did well they could to prevent the damage that was caused by the war whilst also saving themselves from giving up on life cause they both were scarred in their hearts from the dance. Further generations wouldn’t understand the importance of the sacrifices these brothers made and the things they went through from which no one would ever recover.
I’m surprised he was even capable of having children given how little interest he had in both women and life in general.
He just lied down and thinked of England, I mean Seven Kingdoms:)
He did his duty he will always have my utter respect for that
He had five children, so he did his job.
He probably wanted to have as many heirs as possible so that the Dance could not happen again
I’d have been depressed as fuck too if most of my family was dead and I’d seen my mother murdered before my eyes.
Great video!
As for Aegon III, I really can't wait to read Fire and Blood 2, and see if he had any part in the extinct of the dragons. Silverwing was still alive, for exemple; what happened whit her?
We do not know much about the first three sons of Rhaenyra. I guess Jacaerys could have been a good king, judging by his diplomacy skills. He did bring the Vale and Winterfell for the Blacks - I really don't see Cregan Stark being ally with a weak king.
I have a feeling a lot of events from the main books will make a lot more sense once we have fire and blood 2
I have a feeling it was the Maester Conspiracy. The few dragons that were left were slowly killed off by the Maesters.
I'd love to see Stannis and Aegon iii have a conversation.
0:09 Aegon III is literally Matt Smith in the flesh

Aegon The Dragonbane hated kingship but unlike many of his predecessors and successors he governed well if nothing else.
Yeah, he was good at his job but unfortunately is seen as a bad king cause the last dragon died during his reign(as if he had anything to do with it), and also the fact that unlike traditional kings he didn't partake in tourneys or hold lavish feast for the small folk to enjoy, so they viewed him as a boring king
@@d_ling28 ya comparing him to sons Daeron and Baelon he gave the people what they needed

Man, considering he saw his mom ( in which he truly loved)being burned alive and eaten by one of the dragons 🐉 was and is the most cruelest thing I’ve ever read being done to a child. That was Aegon II who did that on purpose for revenge over the beheading of his son when cheese killed him. He set that up on PURPOSE so he can exact his revenge on HER child. The dance of the dragons war had absolutely no winners, and I truly believe Viserys had the authority to set perimeters and boundaries while he was still alive. However, he didn’t. Crazy that he died in just his 30s. He ascended to the throne even earlier than Jaehaerys I had. Imagine if he'd lived just as long as Jaehaerys had, he would have been the longest living monarch in Targaryan history, AND likely averted a lot of the problems that Daeron, Baelor and Aegon IV caused.

The show made it too obvious that Rhaenyra’s sons by ‘Laenor’ were bastards, in the books it was indeed rumour (which wasn’t exactly confirmed). There was a possibility that they might’ve indeed been Valerians cause Rhaenys had black hairs. Another interesting thing is that even in book we never see Daemon having anything against Rhaenyra’s first 3 sons, instead he went to avenge Lucaerys. Otherwise a proud Targaryen man like Dameon would want his biological sons to be the heirs of throne.

Some of Viserys behavior during his reign mirrored Robert actions during his reign they both were lazy dealing with the responsibilities of ruling. It’s no way you allow Otto although he’s your Hand to dismiss Corlys concerns about the Triarchy without you even giving it a thought. Robert did the same which is why LittleFinger was able to bleed the Throne into debt & not one time was he questioned about it. Robert & Viserys also ran from conflicts & confrontations even within inside the Red Keep & immediately following their death the Realm was in chaos & war. Side note I always wondered were the Maesters writing a true assessment on Aegon iii because he had five kids yet he was supposed to have always wanting to be alone almost never smiling laughing & talking had to be reminded to eat. I’m no therapist far far from it I always was under the impression depression especially depression to the point needing a reminder to eat just sitting alone in a room quiet not reading anything nor writing that level of depression you lose any if not all desire for intimacy. How does a person go from no enjoyment of any companionship not so much as a sweet & short small talk to sharing intimacy then what immediately going back in the dark just sitting there staring into nowhere? I’m not sure always thought some of his history was fabricated.

I wonder if we will see him as King in the HOTD series. Based on the descriptions of him, I’d hate to be the actor trying to give the character some depth.
i suspect we'll see the very early part of his rule but i don't see him as playing that big of a role in the sense it's the people around him who make everything happen
@@WorldOfWesteros - then we’ll see a boy get traumatized over and over.
Damn he was nearly dead inside understandable to.
Westeros is a shitty world.I do feel sorry for Aegon the 3rd it was out of his control .The Targaryens split and warred against each other for nothing,In the end the kid who did not want the throne had it forced upon him. This war started the beginning of the downfall of the Targaryens as rulers leading up to Robert's rebellion.
