One thing I see all time is that people think that DIY just means that they just hook it up and go. Funny story, I went to house where the owner told me he put it in himself 😳. Besides sweat and compression fittings I had never seen crimp fittings before this customer's unit. They kind of looked like PEX plumbing fittings. He told me he was getting it to run but not cool. I hooked up gauges and got NOTHING. At first I thought I had forgot to open them up. I asked the guy how long he pulled a vacuum before opening the condenser valves. He asked " what valves". He had a line drier so someone had a basic understanding of the system. I did not want to disassemble the entire install and start over so I put the vacuum pump on it for an hour and then came back to see if it held vacuum and it did. After opening the mystery valves the DIY charge ended up being very low but it took only a couple of pounds to get it perfect. I always wondered if the time that his system sat with atmosphere in it caused any damage. I will never know because he has never called me to fix anything. When I left the evap coil was putting out 48deg. and that was good enough for me and him. With so many variables in a DIY install the last thing I thought of was acidic oils in the line. I don't think it would matter to DIY'ers but to a professional it makes sense. Thanks for this report.
