Sterling Sharpe: Meet Brett Favre’s GREATEST WEAPON… Until a CAREER-ENDING INJURY | FPP

  • Today, when you hear about the NFL and a Sharpe, it's Shannon Sharpe, and deservedly so, he revolutionized the Tight End position and dominated for the Denver Broncos and to a lesser extent, The Baltimore Ravens. But he had an older brother that no one talks about, yet he'd be the first one to tell you how good his brother was. Sterling Sharpe was an elite pass catcher in his own right at the wide receiver position. He would show consistent improvement with the South Carolina Gamecocks of the Mid 80s, yet unfortunately redshirting their 1984 Black Magic year. But once Sharpe entered the NFL and joined the Green Bay Packers, he was head and shoulders above most receivers in the game. Jerry Rice is the pinnacle of the wide receiver position, yet at a time where he was at his best, Sharpe was probably the 2nd best receiver in the league and the discrepancy wasn't that obvious. He put up incredible numbers for some bad Packers teams during the late 80s and early 90s, where during this time, he had quite a few less than stellar quarterbacks throwing it to him, with the best being an often injured Don Majkowski. But once Green Bay hired Mike Holmgren and traded for Brett Favre, Sharpe would play out of his mind for the next three seasons, leading the NFL in all major receiving categories multiple times, and even winning the 1992 receiving "Triple Crown". But before he reached 30 years old, a couple freak injuries showed that he had vertebrae damage, as ultimately, an unexpected neck injury would end his career abruptly after just 7 seasons. And even though Sharpe didn't do much winning during his time in the NFL, he didn't everything he could by producing at a hall of fame level. Unfortunately, the meteoric rise Brett Favre immediately after SHarpe's retirement led to him being quickly forgotten, yet Sterling Sharpe was without question a First Ballot Hall of Famer pre-injury.

I agree . It’s crazy he is not in the hall even though his career was cut short . It’s hard being a bear fan admitting this . Terrell Davis who also had a shorten career is in the hall of fame, there is no reason Sterling whose numbers in a 15 year career if not for injuries, playing with Bret Favre, would’ve some of the best of all time . I think if Andrew Luck eventually gets in in the next couple of years after his short career, that would in my opinion be very unfair. I think it’s partly because Sterling didn’t have a great relationship with the media who does the voting for the hall of fame .

As I watch Sterling Sharpe's highlights all I can hear in my head is Shannon Sharpe holla'n "cookin' um, cookin' um"! Man I used to love Sterling as a player and when he worked for NFL Network with Brian Baldinger. Props to Shannon for giving Sterling a Superbowl ring and saying he was the best football player in the family.

Rice said Sterling was the best receiver in football due to the fact that every team knew he was going to get the ball and they still couldn't stop him. Hell, he made Don Majkowski a pro bowl quarterback. His senior year at South Carolina his max bench press was 450, and squat was 660 lbs and still ran a legit 4.4. at 6'1 205 lbs.

Didn’t know Magic Man had 4,315 yards in 1989. Wow!!! That was great then . I think that injury killed his career and Bret Favre coming in in 1992 via trade with the Atlanta Falcons, was his death blow . Sharpe and Favre had quite a connection. It would’ve been great even as a bears fan, seeing them play together longer .

Sterling Sharpe made Favre and Makowski and got them both paid! That alone tells you the caliber of player this was! I was a packer fan during his time there and he’s 90% of the reason why! Imagine Sharpe, Brooks and Freeman all in their prime’s? That’s the greatest trio of wide receivers ever! Favre throws for 40 to 50 TD’s for 4 or 5times and is known forever as the all time greatest QB and wins 3 to 4 more Superbowls and 2 or 3 more MVP’s cause no one was stopping Green Bay from 96 to 2001 except maybe the historic ‘00 Ravens or greatest show on turf if Sterling Sharpe continues his NFL career!
