    You solder just fine. I've been doing it for 30+ years, the only thing that looks sorta wrong is you're moving the solder in too fast. Let the wires heat up a touch more, it'll flow out better. Still though, any job that works when you're done is good enough. Not like anyone is going to see that! Thanks for the content.

      @John13Edge Před 2 lety

      The only other thing Casey can do to make his life a little easier is to twist the wires together individually before twisting the pair together…according to the experts you are supposed to individual solder each wire first…for vehicles with fine wire I never found that worked very well. If you are using this vehicle in an area that uses road salt I highly recommend never seize (copper based for wire) direct onto to soldered area of joint plus a dab of silicone in each end of heat trace before shrinking…keeps your joints lasting for years…

    I have been soldering most my life (and I am old). I have certainly seen much worse than what you did. Things that I think would help would be a soldering iron with a little more power and a wedge tip capable of transferring the heat faster. Slow transfer of heat leads to excessive heating of the insulation and more time for the solder to oxidize. Also use a sponge or wet rag to clean the soldering iron tip just before starting to solder each joint and re-tin with fresh solder. I would have staggered the joints to minimize the lump that occurs with all the splices side by side. Amazon sells some economical kits of shrink tubing in multiple sizes and colors that are excellent for this type of repair. I am sure that you would have a lot of comments on my attempts to weld.

    Casey, take a small chunk (6") of 12 gauge copper house wiring and take a small alligator clip and solder/crimp it to the each end of the 12 gauge wire. Now you can bend it to whatever shape that you want. It is light enough that it won't pull everything down, and it holds the 2 wires that you want to solder just fine. You can also use it by anchoring it to something using the free end to support whatever. It will withstand being bent many times, and if it finally does break, just make another one.
    Another little tip, when using electrical tape to wrap around wires where you have very limited room and a roll of tape just won't fit, take a flat screwdriver and stick the end of the electrical tape to it, then wrap it backwards (sticky side out) around and around the screwdriver blade. You need to have clean hands to use it, but you can use it in very tight places. I will make 4 or 5 at a time and keep them in the little plastic container that the tape comes in.
    Every connection in the wiring of my T Bucket is soldered and heat shrunk. The only ones that are not soldered are the wires to my gauge lights.
    Also I have a full set of non insulated crimp connectors. The wires will solder to them quite nicely. The parts house will most likely need to order them in, because most people would not use them. They are just like the butt connectors, they just have no insulation on them. Being a mechanic for 45 years, I HATE crimp connectors. They get corroded, or pull out, or don't make a good connection with the conductor. When I worked for the DOT (13 years) everyone always wanted me to repair their wiring just because the wiring would not fail again. At least in that area. LOL It will take twice as long to do it right, but once it is done, it is done forever.

    Good job from someone who soldered for 50+ years before retirement. What you did in this video was quite acceptable, even using the lighter on the heat shrink.
    One suggestion: apply some additional flux before soldering. Liquid, gel, or paste are equally good, and it doesn't take much. It will help the solder flow down into the strands and will greatly reduce the time that heat must be applied. Too little flux is the usual reason for "points", the bumps and peaks left behind when the iron is removed.

    The best advice I can give on soldering is apply the heat to the joint and keep it applied while flowing solder on the joint. It appeared your tendency is to apply and remove heat, using the iron to melt solder. Try it on a scrap wire, see if you like it better. As for holding the wire joint still, get a 6" piece of bare solid copper wire. Bend it in a "U" and crimp on an alligator clip on each end. Very light weight and holds joint still. I've been bending wrenches for a living 60 years. Like your work. Thanks.
