  • One of the most amazing experiences we had during our 150-day road trip across Canada was being one of the first people EVER to drive to Canada's Arctic! Before the new Inuvik-to-Tuktoyaktuk highway was open, we got special permission from the government to drive to Tuk and document the experience.
If you're curious about the adventurous drive, what Tuktoyaktuk looks like, what you can see in Canada's arctic, or just beautiful scenery, this episode is for YOU!

Tuk used to be part of the DEW line with huge radar antennas maned by American military personnel. Long since gone now. There also used to be a huge hanger at the very end of the dirt runway not to far from where you were wading in the Beufort Sea.
I was there back in the early 70s. Got there by employer supplied helicopter from Inuvik. The most popular souvenir at the time was a hand made doll of sorts called an Ookpik. Looked a lot like an owl. Made from seal skin and some little bits of animal fur. They were very cute and especially popular with children. When I was there the town was celebrating the arrival of two young boys that had successfully walked from boarding school in Inuvik to Tuk. Many others had attempted this in the past but did not survive the journey. There wasn't even a trail to follow for them. Just a swanpy bug infested delta for 80 miles. So it was considered quite the achievement for the boys. They just wanted to go home is all. Back to their families. Often you could see what resembled smoke out on the Delta but it wasn't smoke but clouds of biting insects 20 30 feet tall.To give you an idea what survival is like up there in the summer time. It dark all winter. Totally so for about 3 months before the sun even comes to the horizon.

Wow, what a sight it must have been. Yes, spring up there is insane for bugs. August is a great time to go. No bugs haha. Sounds like quite the experience!

The dewline is still operational today, the runway hanger is gone but they’ve built a new one, and the boys that you are talking about were three boys that ran away from the residential school in inuvik, they stole a pack of cigarettes from the teacher or supervisor, they got scared when the teachers found out who stole the cigarettes and decided to try and walk home during early summer, just one survived two others died on the the way, the survivor is my older brother he was 11 years old at the time, he survived on berries, he walked about 125 miles through tundra swamps and crossed rivers to make it home

It is my dream to drive there. I wanted to be this year, but no enough vacation time, and I have to drive from Montréal. Alors... will be another year. The road looks like Trans Taïga Road or Trans Labrador, witch I both driven. I wait the next video.

Is very wild and large, you feel the space... Also, extremely remote, full of wild life and flowers. Was cold, +1C @ 9 AM on 1st July. The road is ok, gravel, but now they're putting asphalt on top. For sure you will need extra gas, I needed it (and I was driving small diesel car). I would like to re-do it one day. I was in rush, Montréal - St John's, NL and retour in 4 days.
