      Hi guys, I got a set of aluminium TT / poursuit handlebars for my track bike but it is 26mm diameter. I need a slammed stem and these are hard to find in this diameter. Is it safe to use a shim to fit them to a 31.8mm stem ? I'm worried they could turn during a start. Any brand / model you would recommend ? Thanks in advance =) #AskGCNTech!

      Hey! I'm not sure if this fits in the #AskGCNTech question category, but I'm going for it.
      I'm a triathlete and race in a high-end pair of shoes (Garneau Tri Air Lite). I'm currently in the market for new training shoes, and I'm wondering if there is any benefit to training in high-end shoes, or whether I can just do what I've always done and train in a cheaper pair of shoes. (Example: Would I benefit more by training in a pair of Fizik R3s as compared to training in a pair of R5s?)

      Hi, GCN Tech. Love the show.
      I ride a Giant propel advanced 2(2019) that I just bought for a week. After a long ride I had to wash my bike. But when ever I degrease my chain with WD-40 bike degreaser(not normal wd-40) the lube(muc-off hydrodynamic lube) never seems to come out fully. I even used a brush to try to get the dirt and grind out with a brush and extra degreaser but no luck. And when ever I brush the drivetrain the oil gets on the frame of the bike. I use hot soapy water with car shampoo to try to get the oil stain out from the frame but no luck. Pls help.
      My question is
      1)Must I buy a Muc-off degreaser like the drivetrain cleaner(get stronger degreaser)?
      2)How do I get the chain fully clean when the lube is so strong and hard to remove?
      3)How do I get the oil out of the frame of the bike?
      ***I have no tools to remove the cassatte,chain and other parts of the drivetrain😢
      Thanks😀#askgcntech

    Re : chains and chainsets for 9/10/11-speed. The (internal) width of basically all road bikes chains is 3/32", so there is no issues with the chains being 'pushed out' if e.g. you run an 11-speed chain with a 9-speed chainset. The 'width' people normally talk about is the external width of the chain, which does go down with increasing number of speeds. There may with other issues, such as ramps and pins, but the chain width shouldn't be a problem with mixing and matching.

    • @tychoMX
      @tychoMX Před 4 lety

      There's one potential issue with a wider chain (9 speed) rubbing or "catching" between closely spaced cogs or even tightly spaced chainrings if the situation is just right (wrong?).

    • @fukawitribe
      @fukawitribe Před 4 lety

      @@tychoMX Yep there's potential issues with externally wider chains and narrower cassettes etc but not with different 'speed' chainsets in the question, i.e. the teeth on the chainrings are not wider for lower speeds in the same way as chains.

    HI John,
    Great show! Learning a lot each week.
    I have a question regarding rare axle adapters. Due to some warranty issues (manufacturer can't/won't deliver the right adapters back after a repair) , I might need a new pair of race wheels in the near future. My bike has a 135*10 mm DB rare axle, which seems rare. Almost all wheels come in 142*12mm and maybe 135*12mm but that will not work with a 10mm quick release. However two brands (dt Swiss an Zipp) offer fitting adapters for this "situation" but these wheels are usually very expensive.
    Do you know a workaround for this? Maybe a company that makes universal adapters for any of the two? Or maybe even for 5mm quick release? Or is it maybe possible to adjust the frame in some way to make 142*12mm fit?
    The frame is a Cannondale Supersix Evo disc from 2018
    Thanks in advance!
    (by the way, for my winter/training wheels I sawed 5mm off each side of the axle and put a piece of aluminium tube around the quick release. The latter might be a last resort but it might be a bad idea to saw a piece off some expensive wheels... )

My city is quite humid and rainy all year and there's really much snow in winter, so rusting could (probably?) be an issue and it won't do any good if the frame collapses under me.

    Re: chain (1:30): you stated put lube on the roller?!? The lube has to get between the roller and the pin. There’s almost no friction between your roller and the cogs/rings. They engage the tooth and ride around. The friction of a chain happens inside the roller where it contacts the pin. Therefore the lube must be put on the gap between the rollers and the inside plates so capillary action can draw it into the space between. Also needs to be between the outer and inner plates so that lateral flex of the chain as it moves across gears can be lubed.

Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. Hi Guys, I‘ve gotten into roadbikes about 6 months ago, bought a used bike with an aluminium frame, 105 5800 groupset, mechanical disc brakes. Bikes MSRP was 1100€. I paid 400€ used. First owner upgraded the wheels to Mavic Aksium.
    A friend of mine had a spare 105-R7000 crank which I fitted onto my bike (needed a new BB, and a new FD) That felt great and now I‘ve got the upgrade fever. But just how far should I got on an alu bike? Would carbon parts be stupid (eg. handlebars)?
    I quit my side job as I‘m about to graduate law, which means I can‘t afford a new bike anytime soon and I‘ve gotta stick to this one for at least another year. I‘ll most likely use it as a winter bike later.

    • @chrisko6439
      @chrisko6439 Před 4 lety +1

      I would save up and buy a new bike when you can afford it. Carbon handlebars are expensive and you don't want to use them after a crash. Plus they won't save a lot of weight, you'll pay way more than 1$/€ per gram which is too much, imo. Depending on what tyres you got at the moment, that might be a great upgrade which doesn't break the bank. You also can install some light innertubes , they don't cost much and will roll noticably faster (I'd try butyl tubes around 70g instead of 100g standard ones, just be careful when installing them and you'll be fine). Tyres and innertubes are the most noticable upgrade - if money matters.

      @@PKownzthem You're welcome. I wouldn't ever put carbon handlebars on a bike unless I was building a really light climbing bike, which obviously won't have disc brakes on it, they are relatively heavy. Maybe, if you don't like it too much, you could change the saddle. Better weight/cost ratio than handlebars if you don't go too far. Some mates of mine use chinese carbon saddles that weigh only ~100g for ~40quid, they had never any problems with them. Also you can weigh your bottle cages, and if they are heavy, you might find way lighter ones (even alloy) for a few bucks, I got some with 65g, 48g, 33g and 18g, all alloy, those 33g cages did cost 4€. Quick release skewer weights also differ a lot. All those things you can install later on your new bike without much hassle (unlike the change of a handlebar). Last not too expensive thing I can think of at the moment is bartape - depending on your needed level of comfort, you can use lighter tape, or wrap it so that you don't need all of it.

      Chris Ko For the handlebar I‘m actually not concerned about the weight, as my bike is around 10kg anyway, but just wanted something with a flatter „wing“ shape, and that doesn‘t seem to exist in aluminium

    Hey guys, love the show. I just bought a 2007 specialized allez elite as my first road bike. Absolutely love it, but it came with a 3x crankset and I literally never use the smallest ring. If I want to switch to a 2x setup, what exactly would I need to replace? I have tiagra shifters and 105 front and rear derailleurs.

      @@John-iq4jd Ride your bike for a while and if it's still fun, buy a whole new bike, if you can/want to afford it. That way, you'll have to bikes (old one for commuting and/or riding in winter or wet conditions). Upgrading whole groupset is quite expensive, bike manufacturers pay way less for them as we have to. Look for 2019 models now and in 2020, you might find a bargain. I bought my 7kg roadbike with Ultegra R8000 for 1550€, the Ultegra r8000 groupset alone costs almost 700€. Btw. if you look after and change your chain when it is time, it probably will take you years/maybe even decades until the chainrings are worn out, depending on how much you ride.

      If it's not the derailleur limit atjustment, it could be that you changed the chain recently, but your rear cassette teeth are too worn out, and now the chain is jumping under torque.

      Could be what Albertas A. said. Could also be that your chain is too long. Or the chain is worn out - if the chain is slipping because it's worn out, the cassette will be too and probably the chainrings as well. It will be useless then to just put on a new chain, for the reason Albertas mentionend.

      @Pastamistic Před 4 lety +1

      I'm not James but I'll have a crack at this anyway. If it's for sentimental reasons or to have a cool retro bike than yes it is worth it. If it's for financial reasons than it really depends on what kind of condition it's in. If all the bike needs is a chain, some lubrication and maybe tires than that would be plenty cheap to be worth fixing up. If it's much more then that you'll probably be spending about the same amount of money or more to refurbish the bike as it would cost to buy a more modern used bike that's already in good shape.

It's when you ride your bike for weeks without maintaining your drivetrain that makes it a pain with all the guck and accumulated filth.

It will make your chain look clean and keep oily grime from wearing away the cassette though. And "CLEAN OFF THE EXCESSORY LUBE" should be one of the Top5 GCN tips. It is way more important than "CLEAN YOUR BIKE", imho.

      @@chrisko6439 Fully agreed. Being a bike mechanic I always tell customers that the oil does no work where it can be seen. People put lube over lube developing into a thick paste over time thinking "It's silent so it must be healthy". Doing a weekly cleaning helps getting the grime out of the chain, of course not all of it, but at least it doesn't seal it in making it worse.
