    Upgrading the rear shock on your mountain bikes is one of the best and most noticeable ways to change the feel and performance of your bike. When looking to upgrade your bike's rear shock, there are a few key elements to know and consider. Things like shock length, stroke, and eye to eye measurements are crucial to know before you make any kind of change. Also, consider if you want a coil shock or an air shock. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Not to mention which brand to choose from - there are countless options from Fox, RockShox, Push, Cane Creek, and more. Sounds like a lot...it is. Thankfully, Jeff and Jared are here to explain everything you need to know about upgrading your MTB rear suspension. Get a notepad out because this episode is loaded with good information. Enjoy!

    The more complex a rear suspension system is, the harder it is to upgrade to a better, compatible shock that is tuned or can be tuned the proper way. Then again, this is a great guide, thank you very much!

  • @rickbullotta2036
    @rickbullotta2036 Před rokem +9

    One thing you should mention regarding shock fit/compatibility is that, in general, the orientation of the shock does not matter - either the front/back orientation or flipping it vertically. The dynamics are identical independent of the orientation. It may look a little odd, but you can fit some shocks with piggyback reservoirs in more bikes this way.

    Good point. Most videos talk about eye to eye sizes and stroke, but rarely somebody talks about the rear shock simply do not squeeze into my frame. I was negatively surprised when my new Fox shock did not fit due to LV and SV size difference. And there is very little info about that in general. Frequent rare issues, yes.

    I over-stroked my yeti during a lunch ride. Not only did my longer stroke length feel amazing for me but but it felt better for others as well. Finally with a longer stroke length I’m now able to stuff some shoots I’d never be able to reach the bottom of previously. It feels awesome ! 😜 but for the best feels...I'd highly recommend over-stroking your shaft while simultaneously under-tickling your seat tube.

  • @gpearce11
    @gpearce11 Před 3 lety +9

    One point I've noticed for choosing between air and coil can be rider weight, which is especially important for very tall riders (i.e. people at the very limit of XL/XXL frame recommendations). Thanks to maximum recommended air pressures, air shocks have a maximum weight limit before sag simply becomes too much to ride with.
    With a coil shock, on the other hand, sag is dependent on the spring weight, and there are plenty (or at least enough) 700+lb springs available that would work for people too heavy to run air shocks.

    One thing that has been a major point of confusion regarding compatibility: how does shock tune have to do with it? For example, I have a rascal with the stock super deluxe select. I've been considering getting something with more knobs or a coil or something in the long term. But even if I wanted to just buy a super deluxe ultimate which the bike can come stock with, can I just buy one and slap it on the bike or do I need to take it somewhere to get it tuned like it would be from factory? If I don't, what problems can I run into?

      Most of the time when looking for a new shock going with a Medium Compression and Medium Rebound tune will be very close or exactly what the stock bike is spec'd with. There are a few shocks that are tuned pretty far out from that spec so to be sure I would contact the frame manufacture, or look up what the stock shock is by entering a code online or calling the manufacture of the shock and giving them the serial number. For a Rascal you can do the M/M tune of an off the shelf shock and it will feel great. If the bike has a really specialty tune then I would contact the brand or a shock manufacture for more info.
