Their AMA video shows the Caves items having 99% of their injection points on the bottom so you won't see clipped marks on them as they are designed for Prismacast. That's the issue with Legacy sets but going forward all of their tiles will designed with Prismacast in mind. The cost is not insane either considering its basically the cost of rattle can primer, a set of paints, sprue clippers and brushes and it looks varnished to last longer than an RPG gaming group.
That’s great to hear!
"last longer than an RPG gaming group" Ouch, cutting deep there, man! I can only imagine you hate onions because they give you competition in making grown men cry... XD
Your guesses about the technology are correct. Stay tuned. :-)
Did you get a dang tour again?
;-)@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
Now I am curious whether the same technique could be applied to miniatures.
Not easily, since the paint can only be applied to the top and bottom of the sprue. So getting miniatures painted with it is going to be quite tough.
It handles slopes pretty well- out of 360 degrees it has a problem with about 20 degrees (5 degrees on either side of perpendicular from the plane of the sprue frame). It's wild... but making this work OK for minis is actually possible!@@TheAnon26
I thank you for declaring your bias clearly at the start and then going HARD and logical at the product. The rubbing of the sprues against each other makes sense and it fully challenges Brent's Ork tossing. Kudos! the kit looks amazing too!

6:00 These are the product reviews we need. Love to see it. Thanks for F&%king around so we can find out (if it's worth it, sure looks pretty dang slick!)
To be completely honest I wasn't expecting much when I saw the title for the video. I can say I was pleasantly surprised! This product really isn't for me, but I can see it being a huge time saver for folks who don't want to get into the crafting side of TTRPGs.
I was going to back this anyway, but now I'm sold on the Prismacast. Any bits that don't look good can always be touched up or changed. Thanks for a great unboxing, Jeremy!
I was on the fence (the price is a little off-putting compared to their previous campaigns) but seeing it in action tells me that the cost is worth it. Also, I hate painting terrain, so that's a HUGE selling point for me.
6:00 All this scratchin' is makin' me itch. 🎶🎵
Considering how little I like painting terrain - this is ingenious. I hope to see more companies do something similar. Especially for wargaming.
This is a lot more impressive then I thought.
Both you and another channel I watch Shadowandson sign the praises of Archon Studios, I'm finally coming around
I have some of their kits from first 2 kickstarters. They are great sets
I have 3 boxes of their terrain unbuilt and unpainted, but if they offered this on their modern / scifi terrain kits, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Eagerly watching this space! Thanks for the video!
This UV paint stuff is remarkable. It's amazing that Archon Studios is looking this forward. Next step is going to be prepainted minis.
Aren't you supposed to be at some Goodwill by the pound? Love your channel
Sooo... Heroforge?
@@mykediemart Hey with prices like THIS I can afford to splurge a bit.
THIS COMPANY RIPPED ME OFF BIG TIME ON KICKSTARTER A FEW YEARS AGO
It’s nice to see you trying different stuff, I heard about your loss and I wish you well. I have to say I started this hobby cause I got burnt with the work that I love, playing music, I couldn’t believe but it happens. And you’re helping me a lot, the way you talk about your struggles inspire me, and I discovered something about myself, I have a little social battery, I thought I was the guy of the stage surrounded but it drains me, I’m introverted, and understanding that changed my life. That identification it’s because the tattoos, heavy music and the… black, it really helped me to understand better life. That’s what I want to say you’re such a great guy and I wish you well.
Thank you Jeremy for highlighting this and showing us what they're doing. Innovation is key. Pushing our boundaries, and taking a risk. I've read the comments below. Can't wait for a behind the scenes. For a person running the games, who may not have the time to paint all things, or create the terrain, this is absolutely clutch. And, if you really want to, you could paint/wash/etc on top of these and make them your own.
Archon are doing very well for themselves - loved their Chronicle X - minis and game and they've gone from strength to strength.
Archon sends Jeremy their latest product using new technology.
Jeremy proceeds to try to destroy said product in multiple ways. :)
Do appreciate the torture testing, as it would be one of the first questions everyone who have. The technology advancements we've been seeing have been awesome.
Love all black magic craft
I was all-in on their crowdfunding before watching this video, but after seeing this😳😍
I agree, this is a no-brainer to not back it!
I might add more to my KotM prepainted pledge!
I think it's a very cool set. And I'd give the painting a 10/10 because while it doesn't meet your standard, it is better than anything I could do. So that's a big 10/10 all around from me.
yep definitely changing my pledge to cover the prepainted. i have so much D&L stuff and the painting is going to take ages, being able to skip some of this is amazing, even if i add some detail myself. i thought this was some of the handpainted or simply dipped in black ink, but this is amazing.
This the most amazing product I have seen. There are lots of companies making dungeon tiles, but not at that quality. That stuff is amazing.
For those of us that lack either the time or the skill, these are awesome.
HeroForge have the option to print the model you made in their digital model creator in color, when I had one of the models I made printed in color which was years ago, the colors was lacking, I don't know know how good it is now, but I can see this being done for something those sprues, still much better then the model I had gotten printed those years back, so the Archon Studio pre-colored sprues are looking really goo :)
I think you'd have to _really_ not want to paint miniatures, to get the Heroforge color prints. Not only are they costly, but yeah they're washed out. They're not the vibrant colors that even a ham-fisted miniature painter can produce. Imo, even a novice's basecoat-only paint job would look better.
@@allisonmackay3818 I know, that is what the model looks like I got, which was free mind you, but there are people that just want a model for their RPG game and they don't want to buy paint and all the other stuff needed, I do agree one can just add base colors to a model and it would look good, but it an option, and I just mention it as this was something heroforge offered years ago :)
@@DanishArtist That's fair, it's not a trivial matter to get "basic" mini painting supplies, is it?
I have so much unpainted dungeons and lasers, and I love it! I use them all the time and am super excited for prepainted stuff. Thanks for showing how durable it is,
Those look beautiful. Such good technology put to a fun use.
My guess is that it’s UV inkjet printed after 3D scanning. I work in a similar industry.
I love all Black Magic Craft videos
The coloration is probably intentionally “bland” so that it can be customized with washes and filters and whatnot, but for gamers who don’t want to spend most of their free time painting the sets are perfect. My only concern would be how well paints and inks would stick to match the existing durability of the finish. Maybe they could market touch up kits of the colored UV paints?
The fact that they used base color in the plastic that near-matches the paint shows that they thought about what would be deal breakers for potential users. That in itself is a breakthrough in manufacturer consideration of what buyers want. Other gaming manufacturers would be smart to license the process and follow their QC standards. If that happens there will be a serious revolution in gaming products.
I’m not sure this technology can be easily extended to character figures especially the more intricately detailed kind with colors that wrap around where a 2D printer can’t “focus” easily but I don’t doubt they’re working on it. If they can get it to work that’s something else that other manufacturers would be smart to license.
I mean if they just paint the master on the sprue and design the miniature to assemble in a way to hide as many of the contact points as possible then I could see it transferring to minis fine
Well, Heroforge already provides coloured miniatures. In that regard Archon has already competition. For terrain this type of printing colours is really fine. And their offer makes me think about a 6x6 feet Dungeon Bowl setup just because this way is much faster to build and more modular.
The detail of printing coloured miniatures just is not comparable with high level self painting. It will improve over time and for out-of-the-box coloured miniatures it is good enough. More offers and more scaling of production will be good for the pric.
I'm scratching my head, Jeremy, trying to see how this 'innovation' plays with the core of your channel.
Getting terrain pre-painted on the sprue ready to go leaves a lot of time for making the really cool bits. I mean, if you only have X time to finish a project, and making basic tiles takes Y time, you only have so much left to make the really attractive stuff like fountains, treasure piles, bookcases, or wizard labs.
On the other hand, his channel has always been about making your terrain the best you can with the least time or money. This product does all of those things.
These are truly awesome, I'm glad each sprue gets unique touches.
UV painting/printing has been around for just a bit, but it is a hit in the customizable POD field. Saw a video of a guy doing custom toilet seats for a restaurant.
I’m impressed. Really great. I love making my own stuff. But these are really cool
These look really nice, though I believe I would still want to paint them myself in a different pattern. But seeing them painted by someone else can still be very helpful when looking for inspiration.
I love all BMC videos
Thank you! And thanks to the professor 🫡
Thank you and keep the good work up for bringing new things to this community
I love looking at Dwarven forge stuff but I’ve never considered buying any of it. This is something I would buy. The sub themed sets really impressed me. Seems like they know what they’re doing, my guess is these are gonna sell.
Lol that's me out of a job... Really nice to see this tech! The hobby really needs inexpensive prepainted options.
That's very cool, really makes it so much easier especially for people who don't like painting
Yep, UV printers for this; they can print on all kinds of surfaces and even create 3d details the same way we might use UV resin for
The printers are pretty crazy, will be interesting to see what other uses will come of them
That looks better than 90% of hand painted terrain I have played on.
I backed an earlier project from them based on your recommendation and I'm genuinely amazed at the quality and pricing. This new version is crazy! I have to believe similar miniatures are coming next for them, right?
I love this video and the product.
Wow. Such a cool technology
This is really cool technology and I hope these kind of products will make the TTRPG hobby even more accessible to new people.
That is pretty, cool im a big fan of Dungeon and Lasers miniatures, good value for dnd
It is quite impressive how well it looks for a print. It seems like very fascinating technology.
You talk about limitations, but what I see is a totally new and incredible technique that looks pretty awesome. I wonder what the future brings
Tbe prepainted look excellent and will allow a dungeon to be up and ready in record time. I have lots of their sets and agree, that these are first class and far better than any other similar product. All i want now is for this technology to be used for prepainted minis!
Damn, that's pretty dope.
Hey man HOPING for a response here!. My daughter and I are looking to see if you can make a video covering how to make Modular Hexagonal terrain like grass / dungeon floor / tavern / river for tabletop d&d. Something small enough to pack up (like 6x6 inch) and make big custom layouts with. I saw the 'Heroscape" stuff recently but we are looking for more of the "make it yourself out of cardboard or foam" type of stuff you're great at! Thanks for reading
Very impressive.
That's amazing 🤩 hope you're keeping well lad
These look amazing and I need them!!! Thanks for the video!
It might be cool to do a paining video where you see what simple touch-ups you can make to turn the 7/10 pre-painting into a 10/10.
Backing this kickstarter. I gotta say, I’m very impressed with the prismacast technology. It’s a lot better than I was expecting for a pre-painted product. And even if the paint job is a 7/10 like you mentioned, it would not be a lot of work to go in and kick things up a couple notches here and there. Archon studio are really innovative, and I’m also curious to see if they bring this tech to some of their minis.
A local games terrain store (In Australia, Battlefield Accessories) does pre paint/printed MDF terrain. They print the art then laser cut the MDF.
It out classes ALL other MDF terrain sets by a long shot.
This idea of pre painting plastic sprue is the next logical step in evolution, but is a great idea .
The proof that they were really thinking about it is the coloured sprue. That along is a genius move.
Got the notification in my email about Caves launching. I was impressed but your testing has sold me on the Prismacast. The flaws can touched up, but it is good terrain with a better than most paint job for a pittance compared to the big competitors. Thanks Jeremy!
This is pretty rad! Very cool man, thanks for sharing!
That's pretty incredible. I've still got lots still to assemble from their last Kickstarter, but I'm suddenly really tempted to get in on this!
Awesome review, Thank you.
That’s a really nice product.
This is fkin incredible! It’s like the best thing I’ve seen in last 20 years of gaming. Light drybrush to pop edges and those are looking better than 99% of terrain I’ve seen in my local clubs.
insanely cool! can't wait to see how this tech develops
These look awesome. You are right, I reckon this is a precursor to prepainted minis.
This is insane, from box to table. I might have to get some after my larger projects are done.
I love all black magic craft videos. This video random but awesome
While the models and paint look nice. I was honestly more enthralled by the technology used. I've seen resin printers that acted just like an inkjet CMYK printer, micro dots of tinted resin UV cured. But that is much more time-consuming, if they can saturate the master model and get decent and sturdy results like this, I am interested!
Great stuff
Wow, amazing! This is better than GW terrain.
love their products ! I have multiple sets from them !
I know the paint jobs aren't perfect, but for casual gamers that want a quick, nice looking piece, then the paint job is more than good enough for many of them. Just back the campaign and got the unpainted stuff as I want more for my buck and I know I can paint them myself (at some point in my life when I have more time than the need for money).
Ok. This is actually sick.
Man Dungeon and Lasers were already an awesome deal... But boy this product is insane
That is amazing!
That is really cool technology with amazing potential 😮🇬🇧♥️
This is the next step in sprue making. I don’t see this come to tabletop wargames, which it surely will, but board games will become epic. This is an amazing evolution.
You'll eventually be able to grab some of our pre-painted terrain for your wargames, but the minis will always be there if you still want to be part of the hobby ;)
I just received their last Kickstarter project, World of Deuslair, which I backed on your recommendation. This is actually exactly what I'm looking for now. I might need to drop some more money on this new Kickstarter...
Love the DJ set 😂😂
Now they just need to come put together as well as painted and it might just be worth the money.
Just checked website and they currently only have one set available in prismacast, but you have samples from at least too so hopefully more coming soon
Sounds a lot like the printing tech that's been used on action figure faces for a while now. Essentially ink jet printing onto a 3D surface.
Imagine if they started doing this with minis in a few years! I already love that A song of ice and fire minis are pre built and ready to play, but if they’d be pre painted that would be awesome. Some games like warhammer won’t benefit as painting’s a big part of it, but many board games and skirmish games would be so much nicer!
This is a really cool technology.
definately awesome tech. great stuff for the people who dont scratch build!!!!
That’s pretty fri’gen sweet
Very cool video of some interesting technology. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I mean I had Mage Knight Dungeon Tiles. So the idea is not new, but this does make a thematic table that much easier.
SWEET !!!
Considering my mental capacity to paint FARRR exceeds my physical ability to actually do the painting.
This is a great idea!
This is absolutely amazing. Thanks for the video. I wonder if you could interview them to have explanations about their process ?
This kind of reminds me of when I was given a Bandai Gundam Kit and the amazement about the color there
I think you’re onto something if they start producing miniatures. That would take things up a notch.
Lego: "No, we can't print five brix in a 400€ set, it gets too expensive!" Archon Studios: "Plastic! Fully printed! Drown in it for a low price!"
Looks good, I wonder if they will start making a sci-fi version for my stargrave campaign
wow! thanks for this video! goind to pledge right now ;)
Yoooo, the tech looks cool as hell. Could someone paint it better themselves? Sure. But the convenience of just buying all the terrain you need and just having to snip and go? I think they've got a real winner on their hands. It's not perfect, but it's certainly better than Good Enough.
Impressive
Color me intrigued
Impressive. Archon is able to get a lot of my disposable income the last years. Between MotU: Battleground and Heroes of Might and Magic III the boardgame, they've shown a great eye for production quality and a passion for their products. While I'm more inclined to make my own terrain, I'm very curious where this technique is going to lead in the future.
It does look good. The only reason I would not go for the painted is because it would not match the colour schemes of all the stuff I have painted before it :)
cant wait for prismacast minis
This feels like a game changer. I'll have to do some research but it reminds me of the tampography action figure companies do for stuff like faces. If you get really close you can see the dot matrix of the paint, but it's reasonably durable from average play.
It's a part of the hobby I love, but the idea of painting is a turn off or barrier for a lot of people.
