    Epic Whistle Battles of History
    WHO WON? WHO'S NEXT? YOU DECIDE!
    This is just a short clip of NKP 765 and 757's whistle battle during the FWRHS and Mad River & NKP RR Museum Members Day event in Bellevue, OH. Steam from the 765 was piped to 757's whistle so that for a brief moment the 757 could be alive again.

    Even though it is only being cosmetically restored, it still good to hear 757’s whistle blow again

  • @railsandracing
    @railsandracing  Před 2 lety +63

    The 757 is only being cosmetically restored. The FWRHS crew connected a hose to the 765's steam pipe, which is located just behind the smokestack, and piped steam into the 757's steam dome so that she could blow her whistle. If you look closely, you can see the hose connecting the two. The hose also shakes whenever 757's whistle is blown. When the 765 wears additional whistles, the guest whistles are also connected to the steam pipe.

    You can tell which whistle is older just by the sound. 765, which wears 700's original whistle sounds noticeably raspier and worn in.

      @railsandracing  Před 2 lety +19

      They actually swapped 700's whistle out with a steel Nathan 6 Chime during the second weekend of CVSR trips last month. FWRHS said that they previously used this whistle in the Coke commercial that they shot a while ago. I think this is the same whistle back in 2011. It does have that raspy sound.

    765: Indeed. I’ve been connected to you through a hose, giving you life once again with my own steam. Unfortunately it’s only temporary, since I’m leaving soon…
    757: I’m just happy you took the time to do this for me. It’s been over 6 decades since I last spoke to anybody. And I’m being cosmetically restored only, so there’s a slim chance I’ll ever run again.
    765: Don’t lose hope just yet, sister. Maybe one day in the future they’ll consider getting you running again, but for right now it’s only cosmetic.
    757: Oh I forgot to ask, how’s 1225? Did he ever get restored?
    765: They got him running again back in ‘85. They did an amazing job bringing him back to life, and I’m happy he’s running today up in Michigan.
    757: I did hear something about a movie being made that had him as the basis locomotive. Is that true or was I hearing things?
    765: No you weren’t, it’s called The Polar Express. And yes, he was the basis. Today he’s been given the nickname “the real Polar Express”.
    757: *snort* That’s hilarious. But at least you two are still running, unlike me…
    765: Sister, remember these 3 words for me. *Don’t. Lose. Hope.* And if you ever are restored, me and 1225 will be at your side.
    757: Thank you, sister. I appreciate that. And I’m happy you two are still here, and sealing the legacy of the Berkshire class. Now be safe out there and roll on, sister. Thank you, and goodbye… *falls silent once again*

    • @renegadeoflife87
      @renegadeoflife87 Před rokem

      Sort of? If the steam hose was long enough it could put steam into another locomotive to use it like a slug, contributing to traction but not to overall power. Doing so would reduce the top speed, as 765 would be unable to raise steam fast enough to sustain both engines because the exhaust of the 2nd engine would not be contributing to draft on the fire.
      It can be quite challenging for a fireman to keep steam up when powering an engine that doesn't have its exhaust tied to the blastpipe. I've done it a few times now with steam tractors supplying stationary engines through a hose.
